This is a great reference for Southern gardeners; packed with info and printed in small type, just the way I like my guidebooks. It includes some surprisingly obscure genera of plants, such as Nolina, and ones that are mainly grown in the Southwest, such as Brahea.
Note: The first copy I had was missing pages 273 through 288, so if you're buying it used (1998 edition), make sure to check that part of the book beforehand. I luckily got another copy at a Goodwill for 40 cents, with the same ISBN, with the pages all intact.… (mer)

Great reference with lots of detail. Not as good as Sunsets Western Garden Book because it's missing the growing chart for each zone.
This is one of my favorite books! The authors are southern, and so are the plants.
I have many of them, and indeed, they are not always available in nurseries. One of my favorites is the hardy begonia, a start of which was given to me by my sister, Linda. The plants covered are each treated with some basic information and an essay. Each of the essays includes the author''s initials indicating who wrote what.
The photographs are made by the authors too.
