I was able to get an advance read of the galleys for this book through NetGalley.

Bottom Line Up Front: absurdly simple business "advice" book that despite being quite short, is overly long and full of narcissistic anecdotes. And sadly, undermining narcissism...pretty much every decent (and other) point has an accompanying I-love-me-I-was-awesome story. It's tedious.

From the text and subtext, the author appears to be the greatest consultant in the history of business management consulting, saving companies $500 million here, $500 million there, $200 million there, glorious accolades...but I'd never heard of him before this book. Here's a baffling question: how, in a modern world, can there be a company with such revenue and such unfathomably poor business practices that a consultant can find half a billion dollars of inefficiency savings??!! Moreover, how can there be more than one such company??!!

The basic premise that small things (dropping a toothpick on the ground instead of throwing it away) can make a difference has merit, but I take issue with an alarmist sky-is-falling announcement that such is indicative of a systemic problem. It might well be. Or it might not be. I also am not overly fond of cute backronyms: STAR is the star of this little book and stands for Being Straightforward, Being Thoughtful, Being Accountable, Having Resolve. All oddly illustrated with seemingly contrived situations and generous narcissistic non sequitur anecdotes offered as support.

The stories are a bit much. And Mr. Chowdhury comes off as a but much as well.

But...even the lightest of books has some kind of takeaway and the subtitle is the best part of this one: When Good Enough Is Not Enough. (My copy...the title of this Goodreads entry of this still unpublished book has the contraction.) Unfortunately, the author didn't really pursue that well in this book.… (mer)

This is a book advocating personal character in business by management consultant Subir Chowdhury (who also writes books on Six Sigma). This book is organized by the acronym STAR. Chowdhury argues that great leaders are straightforward, thoughtful, accountable (responsible and committed to their vision), and have resolve.

Not much I can say in way of criticism. Leadership books that argue for character development have a good message. These four characteristics ought to mark any leaders leadership and too often do not. Like other books in the genre, Chowdhury fills his book with anecdotes from the business world. We hear about company cultures where everybody did not buy in to the purpose and vision of the organization and insecure managers with fragile egos. We also hear how straightforward, thoughtful, accountable people with resolve turned things around for their organizations.

This is not mindblowing prose, but not bad.… (mer)

Subir Chowdhury is vice-president-directeur aan het American Supplier Institute (ASI), een internationale onderneming op het gebied van advisering en training voor Six Sigma en kwaliteitsverbetering. Quality Progress van de American Society for Quality erkent hem als een van de 'voormannen op het gebied van kwaliteit in de eenentwintigste eeuw'. Chowdhury is auteur of medeauteur van Robust Engineering, QS-9000 Pioneers, Management 21 C en The Mahalanobis-Taguchi System.

De auteur, directeur van een adviesbureau, wil de managementstrategie Six Sigma op een toegankelijke manier uitleggen, zodat daar motivatie vanuit gaat in plaats van angst. Six Sigma vindt zijn oorsprong in het denken van kwaliteitsgoeroe prof. Deming en is vermengd met Japanse riten. Sigma is een statistisch begrip dat duidt op een standaardafwijking, hier gebruikt om de bandbreedte van wat een goed product is aan te geven. Six sigma is een maat voor uitzonderlijke kwaliteit. De auteur behandelt aan de hand van een gesprek tussen een ontslagen manager en een manager die deze strategie hanteert, de verschillende aspecten van deze combinatie van een statistische meetmethode en een managementfilosofie. Hij gaat met name in op de analysestappen en de invulling en aanduiding van sleutelfunctionarissen in de aanpak van verbeterprojecten. Het boek heeft een heldere lijn en bestaat uit louter tekst; kernpunten worden vetgedrukt herhaald. Het boek is verhalend en goed leesbaar geschreven en bestemd voor managers die met weinig moeite van dit onderwerp kennis willen nemen.… (mer)
