Heather Murray Elkins describes faith through our everyday, ordinary -- even mundane -- surroundings in "Holy Stuff of Life," a collection of stories, meditations, poems, and prayers written over the course of several years. Elkins, who teachings at Drew University Theological School, offers compelling insights into faith through her reflections of the world around her, especially in her often moving stories.

As with all collections, not all of this material will likely be to every readers liking; as such, I found a couple pieces more tedious than thought-provoking. But I was amazed by the theological vision here, a down-home, reflective vision of an omnipresent God, glimpses of which are seen in things like silverware and broken cups, food and its preparation, sewing and garments.

While not marketed as such, the book would be useful as a daily or occasional devotional, and has stories quite appropriate for sharing with faith groups. Elkins language is engaging and fluid, and her theological perspective in accessible and inviting, supported but not weighed down by the careful thought that has gone into these pieces.
