Kort biografi
Candace Pauline Camp was born on May 23, 1949 in Amarillo, Texas, U.S.A.. The youngest of three children born into a newspaper family, her mother, Lula Mae (Irons) Camp, had been a reporter and her father, Grady Camp, was the business manager of the Amarillo, Texas, newspaper, some of Candace's earliest memories are of making up stories which she played out on the floor of their den with whatever objects were handy. She cannot remember a time when she was not interested in creating stories. She began writing down her stories when she was about 10, and from then on writing was her favorite form of relaxation. Explains Candace: "I was always very shy and did not talk much. However, in written form, I could express all my thoughts and feelings." Writing remained only a hobby, though, as Candace attended college at the University of Texas at Austin and West Texas State University, then became a secondary teacher in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. She later moved to North Carolina, where she worked in the trust department of a bank. It was there that she discovered the romance novel in modern form and started to write her first romance. She also began law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and while she was there, she finished her first novel, entitled *Bonds of Love*, that was published by Jove Publishing in 1978, under the pseudonym Lisa Gregory. Candace credits the rigorous training of law school with teaching her the discipline necessary to finish a book. She gave up the practice of law to devote her time to writing. Two pseudonyms later (Kristin James and Sharon Stephens), Candace writes under her own name Candace Camp, and still loves creating stories. Candace is married since 1980 and they had a daughter in 1982, who has started on her own career path in the field of acting.

Under normal circumstances this book would get three stars from me, which I consider a neutral rating. Historical romance is my guilty pleasure, and I would read a book, rate it three stars, and never think about it again. I don't normally review them, but this book did something that irked me. It features the main characters running around London trying to figure out why everybody wants a near eastern religious artifact. It has supernatural elements, but they aren't pronounced enough to be considered a paranormal romance. This is the Victorian era, and the hero is from the American South. Did you catch that? I haven't read the first book, so when they mentioned he fought in the war, I was like which war? The war of 1812? The Mexican-American war? But no, they are talking about the Civil War, and this is the part that really, really annoyed me because this book mischaracterizes the Civil War to justify falling in love with a man from the American South. Most people know that the Civil War was fought over slavery. As in the Confederacy fought to keep the institution of slavery. This does not mean that Union fought to abolish slavery. The Union fought for nationalism, to preserve the Union. Most white people in the North were apathetic about the issue of slavery, unless they were abolitionists. Freeing the slaves was incidental. The Emancipation Proclamation explicitly "freed" slaves that were in the territory of the Confederate States, which means that when it was issued no slaves in those territories were actually free. The issue of slavery is brought up in the clumsiest way, where the protagonist asks her love interest if he owned slaves. The protagonist's parents are very progressive, which, ok. He acts really offended about this, because as it turns out he turned his back on his family to fight for the Union because owning slaves is wrong. The two protagonists bond over this, and this is part of the reason why the love story is so weak. This would ring true if he was specifically depicted as, like, an abolitionist, which if that is the case why is he still in London? The cause isn't over just because the 13th amendment was passed. The author clearly included this to reassure the white reader that even though slavery is very much a thing, that he isn't a bad guy. My advice, as a black reader, would be to not touch this issue with a 40 ft pole if this is how you are going to handle it. It wasn't necessary. We know from his actions in the book he is a good guy. Fighting for the Union doesn't make him any less complicit in the institution of slavery and racialized subjugation than the female protagonist is complicit in colonialist imperialism whenever she drinks tea. Why wasn't his struggle with PTSD or something to that effect? Tl:DR this book was trying to be woke, but it just called attention to how hard we were trying not to be racist.… (mer)

James De Vere is dying. Laura's father just died. He marries her so that the rest of his family won't inherit his money and estates.
It's a great story. Laura is an intelligent and likable heroine, while James is closed-off and acerbic. I very much enjoyed it as they try to solve the mystery of James's illness and the rest of the story. I was kept guessing until the end. The romance is an enemies-to-lovers trope which I don't usually like but this one worked. The additional characters kept the story interesting without taking up too much space in the main plot.… (mer)

More of a 2.5 - I'm long past my love of the "plain jane"/She's All That sort of romance. I find it rather unlikely in most cases where the Hero and Heroine have met countless times before.

I mainly was in it to find out who fathered the kid (shocker - you'll guess pretty easily based on behaviors of the candidates) and what happened to the mother. For what its worth how the mother disappeared was surprising if not the rest of it.

The synopsis makes this sound a bit more mystery laden then it is. The murder takes place about 2/3rds of the way in, before that the book is pretty much follows typical lines.

I enjoyed this book, I got through it in about 3 hours and even for a romance that's rather quick for me. It keeps up a slick pace, not slowing down after the intial chapter or so of obligatory flashbacks to how the two met, their childhood problems etc. I had some trouble grasping why the author felt she needed to tell us, many times, that Julianna was 'Independent'. Her actions were quite capable and she had proven that she was able to stand on her own feet with a respectable job.

Some minor quibbles with the above synopsis--her one cousin, Crandall, was definately a malicious boy, but her other, Serephina, was more selfish then cruel and did seem to be genuinely happy to see her again when they met once more. Nicholas was the primary suspect for all of two seconds, but with all the enemies the deceased had his was the most minor (and understandable) problem.

Julianna, as I mentioned earlier, is quite competent as a companion, but once Nicholas entered her life again she seemed to have forgotten much of the decorum and common sense she had learned in the 15 years hence. Nicholas for his part argues--both to Julianna and privately to himself--that he isn't a good man, that he's wicked, but he hadn't done anything horrendous. Especially not in light of what his Uncle and Cousin did on a routine basis. He smuggled, he did some espionage for the Crown, did a little whoring...all in all nothing wicked. The both of them were rather bland seperate from each other and marginally interesting when together because they were both convinced the other wanted nothing more then to be siblings! The passion was just sort of there, didn't really effect me.

The only other problem I had was that closer to the end I felt like the author tried to make the twist as off the wall as possible. I was truly interested in figuring out who had the deceased killed, but I was left feeling dissatisfied with the end result. It brought to light some disturbing family secrets that made little sense to be included.

Some of the secondary characters were interesting, though shortly lived. Julianna's friend Lady Scarborough was interesting and her servants and adopted children were all interesting sounding as well. I would have liked more about them, but sadly they left for Italy and that was the last of them. I liked Fiona, the younger daughter of Julianna's employer, but again she was gone as soon as Julianna left that family. The ones who stuck around--Nicholas's family--were standard 'evil relations'. Selfish, neglectful, jealous...

All in all I enjoyed the book and rec it if you want a romance that is mostly light and straight forward.
