Recensioner

A Regency romance set against the background of the Luddite riots featuring a governess and her pupil’s mill-owning half-brother.

OK, but not entirely my cup of tea.

A bit more sharp than the usual fare from this author. Neville Stratton, Vicount Shaldon, heir to the Earl of Alvington, has lived his life under the thumb of his autocratic father. His father decides that it’s high time that Neville marries and sets up his nursery. The problem is that Neville has met a young lady and has secretly married her - and is terrified of confessing all to his father.

Neville’s wife dies giving birth to a sickly boy who is not expected to live, and Neville marries his father’s choice of bride, thankfully forgetting his youthful indiscretion. Nearly 30 years later, Neville quarrels with his younger son, Anthony, and sets in train an investigation to find out what became of his eldest son, using a neighbour’s secretary as legman. However, the secretary is jealous of Anthony, and ends up trying to manufacture a fake heir.

This is entwined with the three families living nearby each other, the Alvingtons, the Lydneys and the Somerbys, who are connected by friendship.

Not bad, with a bit more raciness than is usual.

The focus moves to the 4th Denham daughter, the mad-cap one, and their neighbours, the Earl of Chalgrove. A marriage is proposed to Freddy Eversley to Phoebe Chalgrove by his aunt, the Dowager Countess. The problem is that Freddy is not interested in marriage, and even if he was, his cousin isn’t the sort of girl to attract him.

Reluctantly accompanying his Mama to Chalgrove Park, he renews his acquaintance with Nell Denham, whom he last met in Brighton some two years ago.

This series is very light, but a sensible read in the Georgette Heyer style. Set among the country gentry and the aristocracy, they are of their time, being romances with no real social commentary (Heyer did give a nod to that). They do at least avoid the usual bodice ripper tropes.

Escapist romances that are written well.

The focus moves away from the Eversley family except in passing. The Denhams have 6 daughters to marry (apart from the oldest who is already married). The middle 3 daughters are invited to spend a season in Brighton with their married sister, where they fall in with Vicount Pamyngton and his friend Freddy Eversley (Hugh and Georgiana Eversley’s younger brother). The elder of the three is in love with an impecunious clergyman, but he is noble enough to forsake her as he doesn’t want to live on her fortune. The youngest of the three is intent on having a good time, and the middle of the three is tryng to keep her younger sister out of trouble, help her next elder sister’s romance to blossom, and not fall into scrapes herself.

The four books are reviewed as a whole in the 4th book.
