4160 Of Long Memory Mississippi and the Murder of Medgar Evans, by Adam Nossiter (read 11 May 2006) This is a 1994 book by a New York Times reporter, telling of the Medgar Evans murder on June 12, 1963, in Jackson, Miss. Byron de la Beckwith was tried twice in 1964 and both juries hung. The case was resurrected in the late 1980s and he was convicted in 1994. The conviction was affirmed on Dec. 22, 1997, by the 9-person Mississippi Supreme Court (citation: 707 So. 2d 547) with four votes for affirmance, one dissenting, one dissenting in part and concurring in part, and 3 not participating. This is a very good book, and the account of the trial is very well done. One rejoices that Mississippi has people able to do what was done in this case, finally.… (mer)
