Azar Nafisi is best known as the author of the national bestseller Reading Lolita ... (mer)in Tehran: A Memoir in Books, a moving and often harrowing portrait of the Islamic revolution in Iran and an incisive exploration of the transformative powers of fiction in a world of tyranny. The New York Times best-seller has been translated in 32 languages, earning numerous awards and critical adulation. Expelled from the University of Tehran in 1981 for refusing to wear the veil, Nafisi is a powerful advocate for gender reform, and women’s role in the move towards an open society in Iran. She left Iran for America in 1997, where she currently lives and teaches at Johns Hopkins University.
Nafisi will be joined in discussion by fellow Iranian-born writer Marjane Satrapi, whose eloquent, black and white graphic novel Persepolis was hailed as a dazzlingly singular achievement. Wise, funny and heartbreaking, Persepolis tells the story of Satrapi’s childhood in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. The highly anticipated release of the animated feature Persepolis, which Satrapi and a team of 90 artists painstakingly drew by hand, is scheduled for theatrical release in fall 2007.
