The plot: Standard hard drinking, hard drugging, antihero type with a dark past seeks missing girl in violent Cambodia. The verdict: Really well done, with consistent pacing and plenty of action but characterization (especially of minor characters) needs work, as everyone seemed to blend together. Also, there was just too much substance abuse for my taste, although I appreciate its usefulness as a plot device, keeping our narrator too addled to figure shit out.

I won this advance reading copy through Goodreads so thank you to Simon & Schuster (who are always so prompt about sending stuff).… (mer)

I received a free copy of Cambodia Noir from the publisher through Goodreads -- thank you!

This is a tricky book to review, and I still can't decide how to rate it. On the one hand, I quickly realized this isn't the type of book I would enjoy (I'm more faint of heart than I thought). On the other hand, it does what it does extraordinarily well.

Cambodia Noir is a gritty, disturbing novel about a reporter who uses drugs and drinking and danger to hide from his past. He gets caught up in finding a missing intern -- and her journal entries are interspersed throughout. There's lots of sex, drugs, blood, and horrifying situations.

The plot is gripping and disturbing and comes with plenty of twists that I didn't see coming. Perhaps most impressively, it kept me wanting to keep reading, which was a surprise since it was really intense and, like I said, I'm faint-hearted. The main character is a wonderful anti-hero -- the sort of person I found myself rooting for while simultaneously wincing.

But my favourite part was the description. There's an amazing sense of atmosphere, and it truly paints a hellish picture. (On that note, given the author's background, it made me wonder how much is rooted in truth. I'm guessing a lot. Definitely more than I'd like to believe.)

So, while this book was way outside of my comfort zone, and while I'm not sure how much I enjoyed it, I definitely appreciated it.

This was not my normal fare, but I was intrigued by its setting in Cambodia. Will Keller is a photojournalist who takes a job to hunt down a young woman who was an intern for a local paper. Her sister has not heard from her and fears the worst. Will gets involved with a violent drug cartel to the point where he has to warn his friends of the danger he put them in.

I sure hope this is not a fair picture of Phnom Phen and this country. I know every major city has its problems but this book makes it look like no Westerner should visit.… (mer)

I'm not a fan of "noir", and this was certainly a dark and stark look at parts of a country's underworld.
However, this is author is a talented writer and that kept my interest through this murky, tangled story.
