Ridiculous piece of fluff that I read in one afternoon. Good for beach or pool or airplane or when your brain just needs to relax and space out for awhile. It's all crazy and barely makes any sense but it was a fun diversion. That's all I was looking for.

It's a silly premise obviously based on the modern Mickey Mouse Club and how so many of the kids on that lame show turned out to be mega famous but in this case ONE did not and this is about how she's crazy jealous 25 years later that they are rich and famous and she's just a nobody with essentially nothing to show for her life.

How that ties in with a cross country road trip with a cute boy and almost no money you'll have to read to find out. That part is totally like one of my favorite 80s movies: The Sure Thing.

Imogene was there the night the gunman was killed at the diner. All she can remember is blood and a boy under another table, across from her. Imogene, who has a black belt, didn’t lose her life that night, but she lost her confidence, her heart, and her purpose.

Imogene’s character grows in amazing ways, the realizations she finally makes are hard won, and worthwhile. There is a romance of sorts in this novel but its secondary, in a manner of speaking, to dealing with the PTSD that is happening to her after the diner event. I did wish I knew what Ricky’s therapy was, how he needed to deal with his own issues from the shooting. He does to talk to Imogene at the end, but I wanted more. (He is the boy under the other table, who becomes the romantic interest.)

I really liked this book, but I don’t like the cover, and the paper-back cover is similar to the hard-back. The broken trophy makes sense; I’m just afraid that many of my students will bypass it because of the cover. There aren’t as many karate students here as there used to be, but I’m pretty sure if I can “sell” this to the right people, it will take off.

When she was a pre-teen, Holly was part of an ensemble educational television show. Her co-stars have gone on to win acclaim in music, movies, and television, but Holly . . . didn’t. Now, a big reunion is scheduled, and Holly hasn’t been invited to join the rest of the cast. She plans to crash the reunion . . . just as soon as she gets out of rehab for her Internet addiction.

I wanted to like this much more than I did. The premise of a child star who was the only one who didn’t make the jump to adult fame interested me, but I found that I didn’t much care for Holly as a character. I think she’s meant to be an unreliable narrator, but she comes across as inconsistent. The plot didn’t hold together for me, either — a large chunk of it is the main character and her romantic interest road-tripping across the country with very little money, but I kept wondering if neither of them had heard of wire transfers, because both had family they could have contacted when things got really tight. I also got stuck on nitpicky details, like: has this author never been to a Cracker Barrel? Because you don’t usually buy a bucket of fries there, nor do you get up to refill your own drink. I think the name you’re searching for is McDonald’s. And I’ve never seen camping equipment at Lowe’s, though I won’t rule out the possibility that they might carry some, somewhere. Clearly, these are minor details that I should just get over, but they knock me right out of the story. I can’t really recommend this one unless your tastes are considerably different than mine.… (mer)

1. Strong female characters, including one that ran a successful (albeit secret club) in the shadow of her husband.
2. A unique plot surrounding magicians – while this book revolve around magic, it also shows the magicians as “sexy” rather than “nerdy” AND combines this with a murder mystery plot.
3. Every child has experienced at least ONCE in their life the “wow” factor of magic. Whether from a magic trick they saw in person or on one of the many circulating TV shows (Criss Angel Mindfreak & David Copperfield come to mind). This book does a great job playing into this feeling and includes strong character development with some very mild sultry scenes to seal the deal on a great book surrounding the art of magic.
