It took some real work and time to read this book, but it was so rewarding. History, science, philosophy, history of science, philosophy of science -- I learned so much about all of this. Wonderful work about the vocabulary of science, tracing the usage of words such as discovery, invention, evidence, proof, and many others including of course the word 'science" itself. Makes me proud to be a member of the same species as the author and the subjects of the book.

Excellently well-written, just like Wootton's "The Invention of Science" but with not quite so many astonishing quotations. Also relevant to todays questions about doctors in the era of COVID and the vivisectionist practices still carried out in the name of medicine or science and for no greater gain than in former times.

The quotation about Alexander Fleming is topical: "Fleming thus made a very good living out of selling what were, in effect, sophisticated quack remedies." These quack remedies were "vaccines" that did not work. He showed no interest in penicillin as a therapeutic, leaving that to his students (whose work he ignored) and others.… (mer)
