A bit of history:
I've been an avid reader as far back as I can remember. The two most memorable reading related memories from my youth were (1) a reading pin in 4th grade for being the best reader in my class, and (2) being in a chair in the backyard during summer vacation, so engrossed in my book that a snail had crawled up my arm before I realized it (then I freaked). I fell hard for science fiction (and never recovered) at age 11, after checking "The Martian Chronicles" out of the library and reading it.

At various times, when not reading, I've been a design engineer, fiction writer, UCLA student, student pilot, rockclimber, seamstress, hiker, cross-country skier, gymrat, moutaineer, world traveler, and probably several other things I've forgotten. Oh, and since finding LibraryThing, I guess I better add book cataloguer to the list.

Om mitt bibliotek I have lots of books, gathered over a lifetime, covering a broad range of subjects. It's a reading and reference library, though there might, by chance, be a collectable or two. I'm starting with entering my rather large Science Fiction collection. These books have the most entertaining covers. To that end, I've been careful to use the correct cover, scanning and uploading in those cases where one wasn't available. I have to admit to loving the science fiction collection in cover view. Sorting by date makes a nice cover timeline as well!

I have several other good sized collections, including space exploration, literature, philosophy, general science, archaeology, and mythology. I really have a bit of everything though. I'm entering these in a bit at a time to break the process up. I hope to get much of my library added into the GwenH library database over time.

While I haven't read everything in my library, I have read or skimmed much of it, and intend to read more of it as time and whim directs. Once I settle in here, I hope to add more comments and reviews. I've found the reviews and opinions, posted by others, interesting to read,

I've also enjoyed snooping around other people's libraries and have already discovered a few new books of interest! These were often made when exploring libraries with which I share a book in common. It's also surprising to see which books show up in many libraries and which are uncommon.

Hi GwenH - I understand going back to keyboarding rather than dictating. I've done that myself, but of course problems like carpal tunnel and tendinitis tend to recur. FWIW, I do somewhat better if I close my eyes while dictating (it doesn't help much with the cooking and house cleaning, though...) damselfly/Carol
Hello-I'm fairly new here, and noticed your post about voice recognition software in the Writer-Readers group. I have the same problem - ideas flow from my fingers, but not my mouth... I believe it's a "right brain/left brain" issue - I'm trying to figure out how to work around this. Don't know if it gets better with time or not, or if you can "fool" your left brain into believing you're not really speaking aloud... good luck! Carol
Yes, you definitely want to make time for it! I am going to go back and read his other books.
Congrats on getting Zoe's Tale - I reviewed it on my blog - http://presentinglenore.blogspot.com/200...
Please feel free to be influenced (or not) by our rating system. I've found two very good things about it. The first is that it doesn't involve weighing minutiae. You simply ask yourself five questions: Did this book change my life? If not, did I enjoy it enough to read it again. If not, did I like it this time or when I read it in the past. If not, is there any reason why this book is belongs in our library? If not, is this book so bad it should be skipped by most thinking people? If the answer to the last one is no, I leave the book unrated, feeling that clearly I am just not it's intended audience. Secondly, the system leaves the half ratings open for when Tim and I disagree.

I'm interested in seeing your mythology section as it grows so I've added you as an interesting library.

Hi Gwen!

I saw you wanted a copy of "The Inverted World", by Christopher Priest. I have a copy and would love to send you one! Please forward me your address!
Hi, Gwen. Went back and re-read your post. Sorry I misinterpreted. And I know what you mean about the all caps titles YELLING AT US. I always fix those, and try to remember to cap "all the important words" in a title. Sometimes I do things on automatic pilot, if you know what I mean. Anyway, you are a welcome addition to our merry little band.
Saw your comments on the site improvement discussion board. I do not know if the comment you mentioned re: median/mean came from this discussion or not, but I found it helpful. I do know after reading this discussion I went back and performed some entry and tag cleanup.
