- Om mitt bibliotek
- My library includes most everything (or will when I get it all in) except 'frivolous fiction.' I have included fiction that is not particularly 'literature' only if it is significant to me in some way.
- Om mig
- Professor and scholar who is old enough to know better, Mom who is young enough to rock out with the greatest kid in the world. Pretty much an atheist, but with an abiding love for mythology, art, cathedrals, Dante, and medieval history. Counter-culture enough to maybe get in just a bit of trouble, but wise enough to know how (or perhaps when) not to.
I teach in an interdisciplinary Humanities program at Bellarmine University, meaning I get to play with all sorts of fun courses dealing with medieval studies, literature, religious studies, and other related topics in the humanities. Some classes I've offered recently include Social Justice in Dante's Vision, Utopia & Dystopia, Zakhor: Jewish Memory, and Medieval Foundations of Western Culture.
I have a BA in Humanities/Religious Studies (magna cum), with a Jewish Studies minor, and an MA in Humanities (Religious Studies & Literature), and a graduate certificate in Medieval and Renaissance Studies. I wrote my undergrad honors thesis on Evolution, Patriarchy, and the Sexual Politics of the Religious Right, and then went on to dive head-first into the Middle Ages, and combined the two to write my thesis on the Religious Right and Crusade Language in Post 9/11 America. Now I'm polishing my Latin while I search out the ideal PhD, and keeping busy on a second MA, because why not? (Collect them! Trade them with your friends!)
A frequent topic of research for me deal with specific segments of Dante's Divina Commedia and their implications in terms of medieval Eucharistic theology, and the theology of eating in the Middle Ages. I am discovering that the medievals were a rather ghastly bunch, in quixotic and wonderful ways. I am also discovering that Aquinas is beginning to make sense to me, which concerns me just the tiniest bit.
Some other areas of interest (currently) include Christianity and its minorities in western medieval Europe and related topics. I am particularly interested in heretics & Jews within Christian societies, parallel developments in Jewish and Christian mysticism, and the impact (or lack thereof) of the Black Death on these areas. I am also increasingly interested in modern medievalisms, that is, how the Middle Ages are portrayed and understood in modern culture, and in conjunction with that, have begun to play around with video game studies.
I'm also hopelessly addicted to fountain pens (and inks) which I use and collect, both modern and vintage. I haven't held a Bic in years! In addition to my passion for books (even beyond the obvious academic addiction), and pens, I am also vegetarian, a Mac geek, a bit of a gamer geek, love coffee & chocolate, and occasionally have residual pretensions of being a costumer.
