Om migMy name is Jasmine and I am currently eighteen. I live in a small town where there are trees everywhere and rolling hills :). My main goals for the future are to become a chemical engineer, own a home with cats and a husband, and live someplace prosperous. Some short term goals are to finish my senior year with a 4.0 GPA so I can get the big scholarship from Trine University, accept that moving away doesn't mean leaving everything forever, read, and some other happy things!
My profile name is obviously QueenAlyss, but many people know me on here as Cue, and I would love to clarify that for people cuz it's a nickname from the Hogwarts Express forum (Visit, it's amazing!) and Suge wanted to call me Cue so it stuck!! :D
Some of my hobbies include reading, bowling, and singing, (like in the shower and when annoying people lol, but I am pretty good). I have a 170 bowling average, my high game is a 245, and high series is a 572.
I love to talk.. about anything really. Even if I know nothing about a subject, it's always nice to theorize and discuss in order to further my own understanding, for debate, or to accept another's point of view :D
I have always wanted to travel the world and experience those cultures that mold our society. I believe that it is important that we understand foreign religions, cultures, lifestyles, etc... because without that knowledge, we are limiting ourselves the potential to make a difference. This belief grew after my three week trip to several cities in China. I enjoyed the country incredibly and I would love to visit other countries and to explore! One knows nothing about the world or about life until one has experienced the differing lifestyles of other countries!
I listen to several different types of music but my more favored genres are rock, hardcore, metal, and classical.
If I were to choose a fad/ favorite piece of literature in my collection, my choice would be the manga BLEACH... the Japanese sensation that has spread throughout the world both in manga and anime form. It is a wonderful series about life and mystical creatures such as Holows, Shinigamis, souls, Vizards, Bounds, etc... Check it out!
I never want to miss a moment out of my life and I hope that as I grow older, I will continue to appreciate those things that I have in my life. I fear that I waste precious life seconds worrying about those details in my life that are trivial and forgetting about the details that are important. I want to love my life and the people I have allowed in it, completely and truly. I want to be loved forever and to have that love returned in the same intensity that I give. I know we cannot live without love because loss is only measured by how much we love. If love will carry me through life, and the vigor with which I live it, then I know that I will be eternally happy.
Om mitt bibliotekMy library consists of a range from manga to adult literature. I have independent readers, fantasy, horror, sci- fi, and all other sorts of random things. One thing about my library is that I do not own any novels that I haven't enjoyed reading... yet!
A side note about the novels I choose, I must say that I am the biggest judge- a- book- by- its- cover reader. I will not pick up a book unless it looks interesting enough to me. I think that authors should be creative enough to draw readers in, and if I'm not that type of reader that the author wants, then that book just isn't for me. So far, it's worked great and I have never not liked a book I randomly picked up! Although recently I have been grabbing books I'm not too comfortable with just because they are cheap and who knows, maybe I will like them! However, I still like the covers :)
I've only recently gotten into hardcore cataloging and reviewing of books. I of course catalog all of my books- which means that there is a at least one tag and I add all missing info for the common knowledge area. The reviews I am more hesitant to do because they do take a lot of work and I usually just end up summarizing the book any way. However, I do feel that if I own a book that has no reviews, I must review that book however much I may or may no want to! :)
So far this year, I have only read 58 novels :( Dumb school work keeping me from my potential of reading superiority over Suge for this year... :D You can watch my progress in reading novels at the following link: http://www.librarything.com/topic/64376

It was kinda funny, because my aunt and I were in Barnes & Noble (where we always spend too much), and we were wandering through the manga/comics section. Vampire Hunter D just happened to catch her eye. Since that was one of the first serious anime I ever watched- and subsequently got hooked on- I figured she couldn't go too wrong with it. Et voilà! Now she has the next two in the mail and she's read 23 of my thirty Berserk manga in the last three days. We watched both VHD movies in one day, and she really liked the second one. She also has the first Dark-Hunter manga, which she picked up because she's a huge Sherrilyn Kenyon fan. I'm thinking we'll probably be cosplaying as Dark-Hunters if she has her way. :D
I'm finishing up on my history degree, which I'll probably flesh out at the university level next. I still plan on mastering in mythological studies, so I've got a ways to go. Yeah, you do miss your high school buddies, but you'll meet a ton of knew people at college. And the Internet really helps you to keep in touch with the people you care for.
So what did you do for Thanksgiving?

I've been being lazy lately, mostly reading comics and manga with a few "serious" books thrown in just because. The upside is that I think I've converted my aunt into a manga reader, which means I might have a costume buddy for Cons this coming year. Woot!

thank you so very much for getting my book and writing.
yes....except for the first and last two chapters the book is ENTIRELY AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL. In fact, I wrote it from my diaries in 1976 when discharged from the service so that the memory of those crazy times would be preserved.
I am sooo glad I did! It was my first attempt as an author so it lacks sophistication in places but it is the way it was.
I truly hope you enjoy it!

Whoa, for graduation we need 2 of years science (biology and natural science, although you can take chemistry instead for college), 3 of years history (world history, US history, gov/econ), 1 year of fine arts or foreign language (Spanish or French), 2 years of math, 2 years of physical education, .5 years of health, and 4 years of language arts. How do you have 5-6 years of math? And why would you want to? Lol. Really? We do a lot of essays. We have 11th and 12th AP language arts and no honors so I have to take AP. Yeah, I'm just a procrastinator and a perfectionist...
I love the flute. Haha nice, I know a few notes on the guitar but not much.
Yep it's so hard to remember ALL the books I've read. That would take too long and I don't think I have the patience. But I love the new collections!

The Wal-Mart life is... lame. We're starting to gear up for the holidays. The Christmas music will start playing in another month or so unfortunately. We got really lame stuff for our Halloween section this year, with the exception of a set of Mario & Luigi costumes and the Burger King king guy from the commercials. I bought a couple of really awesome skulls (they're all covered in sequins) which I'm planning to decorate with veves when I find the time. When I do Halloween, I do it right. :P
Read anything good lately? I keep getting stuck with duds.

I took AP Gov, AP Econ, and AP English. Well worth it and not really much harder than the normal classes. The AP tests were a breeze, too, if I remember correctly. I can't imagine doing AP Calc, but then again, I'm lucky to have gotten to Algebra II. :D
B&N does sell used online, but who shops there when Amazon has got them beat in every way? :)

That new Disney movie The Princess and the Frog comes out this winter. I'm really excited for it because it's supposed to be animated in the old school way, rather than the cheap way they've been doing movies since the mid-nineties. It looks like it will be good and with that little touch of voodoo thrown in there, I might just have to go see it. I agree with you on the Disney love. I have most of my favorites on DVD right now.
I wish I had more options as far as B&Ns go, but since South Dakota is kinda the sticks, the one here in Sioux Falls is kinda what I'm stuck with. I've never heard of one that sells used books, though. That sounds pretty awesome. I'll definitely have to investigate when I make it up to Minneapolis.
Lol, my mom did the same thing when we were scouting for colleges for me. She was totally psyched about Sac State and I think she might have gone there herself if she had the time.
Hopefully you get the scholarship. Those can make a really big difference, especially if you're footing the college bill. I pay for my own college, but both of my brothers are lucky enough to have the parents pay for them. My middle brother has a scholarship that pays for half of his tuition every year (good thing too, because his schooling is about fifty grand every year). The youngest brother pretty much pays as he goes because he's attending a community college and they're really affordable.

Yeah, my changed 999 category was a combination of the 999 and the Orbis Terrarum challenge.
Great to hear about Barker's new books - I was wondering if he was going to maybe just paint instead of write...
Yeah, Sweden is very liberal (politically we're social democrats) and the healthcare system works similar to Canada's, i.e. socialized healthcare where you don't have to have any personal healthinsurance. You do pay a lot more tax than you do in the US, though.
I do miss the ease of traveling over there, but the company I work at has employees from about 30 different countries, so at least I get some of my "needs" satisfied over here. But that's Los Angeles too - I'm not sure I'd do as well in other parts of the US.... :)
Michigan sounds like Sweden weatherwise. So you'll feel right at home! :)

Yeah, I heard [Abarat] was going to be a long series, but I got the feeling after the second that he ran out of steam a bit, so I think it'll be a while before he continues it. I'd like him to continue, obviously, but I also don't want him to do it just for the sake of doing it - I'd like the books to be good! :)
Well, growing up in Sweden, I've pretty much overdosed on grey weather, so the hot-hot weather suits me fine! :) Swedish is pretty hard to learn and even people who are completely obsessed with it can't do it well, unless they live there. Anyone who immigrates, though, will be assigned to Swedish-classes, so once you're "in" so to speak, you're set. :) And, yes, we're very progressive when it comes to "green" engineering, so if you're interested in that, Sweden would be good!
That's the really fun thing about Europe - you don't have to go very far to get into another country. Basically, if you are at the southern tip of Sweden and start driving south, you can pass through quite a few countries (with their own language, food, and custom) in a day. If I drive a day from here, I'll still be in an English-speaking (unless I go south, obviously), fairly similar environment. Going from Holland to France for example is quite a short drive, but (can be) miles apart when in comes to national identity and culture.
I haven't been to Asia myself, but one of my brothers just moved to Thailand, so I might go there. And, I have plans to go to Israel in January to visit friends. First trip will be Sweden this October, though - my mum started hinting a while back that I haven't been for a while, so I'm going for her birthday. Looking forward to the food!! :)

It catches the sentiment very well, though, I think. :)
Yeah, I'm originally from Sweden, moved out to California in 1994, meant to stay a year or so, but I'm still here. The weather is just so nice, it's hard to leave! :)
Traveling is always good - wherever you go! I've lived in England, Scotland, Ireland, and Holland (basically anywhere I could get away with speaking English) and it really makes you wiser to other peoples' way of thinking.
In Sweden, if you want to live there, you need to be able to speak Swedish, but for visiting, English is definitely enough - it's pretty rare to find someone who doesn't at least speak some English, unless they're very old.
Glad you have an interst in traveling internationally, a lot of Americans tend to stay in the US (which is totally understandable, since it's a HUGE country with lots to see), but for us "foreigners," it's always nice to meet people who have an interest in things not American. :)

I went to the library yesterday--I usually end up going on Mondays--so I now have a lovely little stack of Bleach to read. Oh, and thanks for all the interesting theories on why it's called Bleach! Have you ever heard of a series called R.O.D. or Read or Die? I picked up the first volume while I was there, but don't know much about it yet.
Do you read many American comics/graphic novels? That's where I really started out; I've only recently really been getting into manga, but it's been fun!
inlägg gjort av PhoenixTerran vid 9:07 am (EST) Jul 29, 2009
I took the first volume of Bleach with me. I really enjoyed the story and liked the art pretty well, too. I've already reserved the next five books at the library. :-D Do you know why it's called Bleach, btw? I also took some Ranma 1/2 with me to try--an absolutely ridiculous series, so, so silly, but I found it to be a lot of fun. I think it was created by the same person who did Inuyasha (which I haven't read).
Oh, now that you mention it, I do remember Sailor Moon! There was one time I was at home sick and there was a marathon on. I did nothing by lay in bed and watch Sailor Moon the entire day. Other than being sick, it was pretty great. There was also a show called Cardcaptors that I liked to watch when I would get home from school. That seems so long ago though that I don't remember if it was actually any good or not. :-) I think it's really interesting that there are so many manga that have anime and vice versa--it doesn't seem to be that common for American comics to have a show made.
inlägg gjort av PhoenixTerran vid 8:45 am (EST) Jul 27, 2009
You know, even though I had heard of Bleach, I didn't actually realize what it was about until I picked it up yesterday. I think I'm going to like it and look forward to reading it! I also discovered that my library has some of the anime, too, so that's great. What other anime programs do you like? My first introduction to anime was Cowboy Bebop which I still really like. Also, Samurai Champloo which is made by the same people.
Yeah, I'm really looking forward to vacation and seeing everyone in my family that I've not seen in awhile. (Most of my family lives in Ohio.) We're going to a state park about three hours or so southeast-ish of Michigan--still north of Columbus. Talk to ya later!

You don't have to take English your senior year? It's required at my school to take 4 years of language arts. And I'm taking honors or AP for all of them which means summer assignments. I managed to finish Fahrenheit 451 but only about a week before school started. And then I finished the journal the night before! :-/ I'm hoping this year won't be a repeat performance.
Band camp is okay. I love band and most people in it, but it's gets hot and sweaty when we practice. Plus the basics are pretty boring (what we do at first for newbies). Drill is a lot more fun. Sadly, the AC in the band room wasn't working (again!) for the week we had so it was soooo hot inside and felt much better outside. For the last two weeks I just hope it works. It will get up to over 100 so that will be torture. I play the flute and I love it. :) Do you play any instruments?
I notice you rated Junie B. Jones books. I used to love those when I was younger.

I have been able to read a lot over the summer. Of course, not the book I'm supposed to read for school... That happened last summer too. I read Eclipse and Breaking Dawn in the time in took to read Fahrenheit 451 which is way shorter. Haha oh well, I'll get it done somehow.
My plans for the summer are probably going to Raging Waters a couple times before my pass expires in September. I'm going to spend a week at my aunt's like we do every summer and that's always pretty fun. I'll be going on day trips and outings with my friends but no big vacation. And then the last two weeks are band camp. :P

But that's cool! I love bowling but I'm not really good haha. I've had school, lots of school. Too much homework...but now it's summer! I'm so happy! I still have a dialectical journal to do on Good Earth though. I'm hoping to make the most of my summer so we'll see how it goes.

It's hard to tell the squirrels apart by color or markings, but very easy to do by personality. We have a female squirrel who only eats pecans out of all the nuts we put out. So we named her Pecan. There's a squirrel named Sweater, who lost all the fur around his chest and back because a bird grabbed him and dropped him. He had a nice, sweater-shaped bald spot for two months there. :) The babies are Squicky, Squishy (after the baby jellyfish on Finding Nemo), and Sticker, who is the son of Stick, the craziest squirrel in the neighborhood.
Our kitties are both indoors always because they have FIV and they could catch something really easy and die if they were outside cats. My cat at home is the same way. We caught her outside, but she's lived indoors ever since and she refuses to go out.
The Humane Society lured me in because they have a position specifically called Kitty Cuddler. I can't think of a better occupation, except maybe Professional Reader. :)
I don't get out to the movies too much. It's expensive, for one thing. And I do Netflix, which is a lot cheaper in the long run and offers a lot of stuff that most rental places and theaters don't offer. If you check out the Chasing the Frog link under the Connections on my bio page, you'll see the kinds of movies that I'm into.
How 'bout you? What do you watch?
inlägg gjort av Schehezerade vid 8:48 am (EST) Jun 19, 2009
I guess there's a reason why my library has started to grow exponentially since I moved out here. :)
Actually, we live almost on the very edge of town (only the Wal-Mart that I work at is any further out), so we have nice big fields right outside our windows. There's a ton of wildlife to watch, especially in the early morning. I lived in the country in California before, but there was never as much wildlife as what we have out here. We have cats, coyotes, foxes, bats, deer, possums, raccoons, owls, hawks, bunnies, ducks, all kinds of little birds, and all kinds of interesting bugs (it's almost firefly and ladybug season, which makes me all excited!). We have a whole three families of squirrels that we've given names to. My aunt feeds them every morning and they come right up to the glass door on the patio and watch us eat breakfast. Right now there are three babies, and they're adorable to watch play. Our two indoor cats go crazy trying to get to them.
There are several museums, a butterfly house, art galleries, and lots of shopping downtown. Also, I think we're going to start volunteering on the weekends at the local humane society.
That about makes up what I do away from working and sleeping. Not terribly exciting, but then I didn't move out here to live an exciting life.

In response to your other question, I make a point to study all religions and major belief systems. With the exception of Mormonism (my apologies if you're of that religion), I believe that all religions have something beneficial to offer humanity, if we make the effort to study it long enough. Right now I'm studying Satanism, which is actually not the worship of the devil, like I had always thought, but the worship of self. I'm discovering that a lot of religions that have been vilified over the years just aren't understood well enough. It's actually pretty fascinating.
Wicca is on my list but I haven't quite reached it yet. I have a lot of Wiccan and Neo-Pagan friends, though. Also, you tend to come into contact with a lot of the types when you attend Ren Faires (admittedly, most of these people only have a very rudimentary understanding of Paganism and Witchcraft) which is fairly educational.
I was raised Church of Christ, but I've slowly become Agnostic (maybe even slightly Gnostic) over the years, with slight touches of Taoism. Of all the beliefs that I've formed over the years, the biggest one is that I don't know enough to commit myself to any one belief system yet.
How 'bout you? Wiccan? Pagan?

I could teach, but I think teaching's boring. I think I may end up working for the government as a historian. Good pay, good benefits. We never know till we get there, though.

I've previewed a little Bleach on onemanga.com. It seems like it will be an interesting read. I wish we did have some good comicons around here or even a decent manga store. That's one thing I miss about living in California- I had a store I could go to where they new what I liked, held stuff for me without me ever even asking for it, and let me preview stuff without buying. Out here, in the boondocks, I'm lucky to even have a comic book store with a couple shelves of manga (though they do have an awesome Star Wars section, which sorta kinda redeems them in my eyes). Amazon is okay (I love their prices!), but I miss previewing stuff before I buy it.
You'd be surprised how many people come here to hunt and buy lotto tickets. So while our population may be small (our entire population of the state could probably fit in Sacramento and its suburbs), I still have a good chance of winning a nice pot. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, anyway. :P

I'm taking my grandmother to New Zealand and Australia in another two years. She's always wanted to go there, and I thought I'd take her as a treat. My real dream has always been to see Rome and Greece, though. I'm a huge history buff, so it's always appealed to me to see the things I've read about. If I did win the lottery (always a possibility in this state- South Dakota population: 5), I'd travel the entire world and take my time doing it.
Actually it was a couple of professional book reviewers that made the comparison. That was what surprised me. If it had just been fans I could've let it go. But reviewers? :)
Don't worry too much about not being smart. Sounds like you've got it altogether from your bio. If I knew five, almost six years ago what I wanted with my life, I would've had it by now. You've got the jump on most people already with your plans being made and all that. *sigh* I sound like an old lady.
So Bleach is good, huh? I keeo resisting it because manga costs so freakin' much. I might have to give it a shot though.

I'm jealous of your visit to China, that sounds like it would have been a lot of fun. Hopefully you get to travel a lot more in the years to come. If you do make a chemical engineer, you should have lots of money to spend on traveling- and more books!

Thanks! The dog in my profile actually died a year ago. I have a new puppy now, and should really change the profile pic, but I like the one that's there, so I leave it up.
Good to see you around again!

That's a beautiful dog in your profile picture. Have you thought of joining the LTers With Dogs group? It's a nice group to show off your pet in.

I never want to miss a moment out of my life and I hope that as I grow older, I will continue to improve in this area. I fear that I waste so much time each day worrying about the wrong thing and not apreciating the important things. I want to love my life and the people I have allowed in it, completely and truly

I agree about the DVD feature. It's not hard (once you get used to the process), but it is annoying. A lot of people will balk if we were to suggest a DVD feature. I learned the hard way not to post on the "recommended site improvements" group.
Wow! I can't bowl at all. I am the queen of the gutter ball so when I bowl I just end up getting really drunk (the places I've been to in NY all have bars btw). But its really fun.
My library is a disaster! I have a lot of stuff that I have to catalog, and most of them are DVD's (we both know what a pain they are). And it is possible that I might never finish tagging. At first I didn't use tags, but then I started to so there are a lot of untagged books in my catalog. I hate doing reviews. Its hard for me to keep a balance between discussing the plot and not spoiling.
gosh I have to go! I'm supposed to be working but my mind is more on diner and the movie I'm seeing later tonight (Fast and furious)(not my pick) lol. I miss you too! Take care!
