Om mig Roman Catholic priest - due to two different academic formations, in History and Theology, I find myself currently teaching Classical History and Literature and Church History to future priests.
Om mitt bibliotek The books listed constitute my day-to-day working library. Being such, I have reluctantly included also some DVDs, CDs, periodicals, maps and catalogues, which are an integral part of my working materials. The book listing includes also other particular interests of mine, some of them clearly related to my teaching (Desert Fathers, French Revolution, 19th-century French Catholicism) and others totally unrelated (Mughal India, the British Raj, the end of the Tokugawa shogunate in Japan, the First World War, historical mysteries, and now an increasing science-fiction sideline...)
I own all the books listed, but the listing is a work still in progress, as I keep getting books - far too many, to the point where the unread widely outnumber the read ones. Yes, that is the sad truth: I haven't read everything on my shelves. Still, if I see something interesting I get it - telling myself that one day I will read it, or search for something in it, or at least open it at random. Although by now it looks as if multiple lifetimes will not be enough... My excuse ? That I try to follow the advice of St. Edmund of Abingdon to his monks : "Study as if you were to live forever; live as if you were to die tomorrow..."

"Disce omnia, videbis postea nihil esse superfluum" [ Hugh of St. Victor ]
"All mankind is of one author, and is one volume; when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated into a better language; and every chapter must be so translated. Some pieces are translated by age, some by sickness, some by war, some by justice; but God's hand is in every translation; and His hand shall bind up all our scattered leaves again, for that library where every book shall lie open to one another..." [ John Donne ]

Can you recommend books regarding the Church and the Papacy in the 8th and 9th centuries?
I am on and off reading Pastor's History of the Popes (via interlibrary loan) and I am up to the reign of Leo X. I find it tremendously interesting but I would like to learn more about the Papacy during the 8th and 9th centuries. I have become very interested in this after reading some of Dr. John Rao and listening to his talks on that period.
I am limited in my reading because I only read English and a little Japanese (usually through the help of my wife who is Japanese). I used to read a lot of Kawabata and enjoyed him.
God bless Father!
Respectfully,
Michael Yoder
