The first book I ever bought and read of my own volition!:
.....I was 12 and bought it at a rummage sale for 10 cents. After reading it, still in shock that a book could actually be enjoyable, I decided it must have been because it had the word "mystery" in the title. So, for a while, I would only read books with titles containing the word "mystery."
.....At some point, after scavenging all the "mystery"-titled books in the youth section at the local public library, I somehow ended up with a Nancy Drew book (which I'd never heard of before) with "secret" in the title, but since it was sub-titled "A Nancy Drew Mystery," I decided I could bend my rule a little. After discovering that there were other Nancy Drew books (in a separately shelved section of the library), some with neither the word "mystery" nor "secret" in the title, I tossed out the rule altogether and just started reading all the Nancy Drews.
.....Eventually, a kind librarian hesitantly asked, "Umm, young man, why aren't you reading the Hardy Boys mysteries?" I replied, "Hardy Boys? Who are they?"
.....Uhh, yeah. Duh on me.
.....Anyway, it wasn't long before I'd tracked down every mystery in the library, having fully opened the door to the world of reading.
.....It would be another year or so before my attention turned to science fiction (starting with the first book in the "Favorite Cover Art" section below) (and what a fitting title!) Then the doors to all the worlds started to open....

As far as entering all of my books into LibraryThing, I've finished with the upper/open shelves and am now working on adding the books from the lower shelves (mostly paperbacks), behind the doors. Not much further to go; the end is in sight!
Also note: Regarding my LT entries for some of the series' (Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Tom Swift, etc), I've played with the Date field a bit in order to get them to display in proper sequence/groupings. I've done my best to keep them in the approximate era of their publication (not an easy task, considering the multitude of publication variations of these series), so please forgive the seeming date-entry errors. (I've left the correct dates in the Publication and Summary Line fields; it's only the Date field that I've tinkered with).

In Answer to your question:
I actually worte down on a legal pad all of the books that I have in my personal library--that is how I started--I worked very fast to get those titles in. Then I wrote down as many titles as I could remember reading over the years, from childhood onward. These are the books I don't own.
I am still adding every day, I look at other people's library's and remember reading the same books...or something sparks my memory...etc.
But it was a daunting task to enter all of the books...
I can actually say, when I was growing up, being able to immerse myself in a Ray Bradbury book actually saved my life.
When we know each other better, I will clarify that...but I can honestly say, Bradbury saved my life...and thus began my love affair with books!
Thanks,
TONY

I don't know, I just wrote down all the books in my personal library at home and then started to think about all the books I have read in my lifetime...still not finsihed, titles keep popping up.
I am a big Sci-Fi, Mystery Fan as you can see.
Thanks for your comments "Friend" !

Thanks for your message. I am living in Belgium and I have taken the picture from the rim of the Canyon of Chelly during a journey in the South West of the USA (September 2006).
I am collecting the Armed Services Edition pocketbooks. I have found all this pockets on fleemarkets in Belgium. I am interested in the history of the US Army during WW2 because we owe very mutch to the American boys who liberated Belgium in 1944 (the year I was born).
Best regards
Geo

So, I was at the neighborhood comic shop picking up the last issue of "The Long Road Home" DT story arc (very nice, by the way, finaly some new material) and I saw this sitting on the shelves...
http://www.librarything.com/work/5793294 (5 issues this Sept)
Looks light you were right about the increase in the number of specials. :-) Still, though looks like it will be fun. Just also saw that Donald M. Grant is publishing a joint "Little Sisters Of Eluria" & "DT:1" with all new and the original art as well. I'll probably have to pick this up, also. :-|
Hope all is well, take care.

So who knows. I've been getting some cataloguing done recently, forced on my by lack of shelf space. Horrors! I had to box up nine boxes of books that I had no room to display. :-( So now the only things on my shelves are my wife's books, (I have vastly more, so I didn't think it would be fair to box her's) the non-fiction, the science fiction, and of course, the Stephen King's. I already have the boxed books logged in, and I will start the shelved books soon. Many are already logged, although not with the condition tags I have taken to adding, but many of my BookMooch incoming books have been neglected.
I actually anticipate on being done by the fall completely! From then on, it should be simple to input individual books as I get them. :-) Wee!
Finished my first class two weeks ago and start the next one Monday. By the fall I should be full time. It's good to be back after all these years. Anyway take care, hope all is well. By the way, I pre-ordered "Just After Sunset" a few weeks ago. I can't wait to see that one! His short stories have always been among my favorites.

A quick reccomendation, if I may. Ever hear of Scott Sigler? I just finished his novel Infected. It's like the early Stephen King (Misery, Pet Sematary)... on crack. Unreal! The book's prose isn't quite the same as King... but man, the stroy is relentless!
Give it a try if you get some time. :-)

P.S. I did notice my amatuer HTML coding was off, on my other profile. If you're bored sometime, feel free to send me the code your using. I have a feeling I know what it is, but every time I edit something I mess up something else and loose the whole thing... :-P

I had not realized that you were not entering paperbacks, I have beeen doing that all along (by the way; up to 167 matched already.) Although, truth be told I have very few paperbacks these days. About five years ago when I moved to Chicago, I was forced to get rid of most of my collection, only keeping the hardcovers. Since then I have bough only maybe 75-100 paperbacks (mostly J's books, but for me mostly books that are too expensive or rare to get the hardcover version; or that only come out in paperback).
And Yes! Pop Art was my favorite from 20th Century. It moved me so much, more than probably any short story I've ever read. And the others are just as good. I may be going out on a limb here, but I think this collection is better than any of the short story collections his father put out. Hill is a genius. I can't wait to see more material from him. A New novel would be very exciting.
Anyway, good luck with the entering of books! I've fallen pretty far behind myself lately.

I'm going back to school this summer, also. I imagine my reading will get way behind as I am taking a full load of classes and working two jobs. It makes me sad, in a way, although I am excited to finish my degree after 8 years off.
Anyway, good luck with all of those. The new comic looks pretty great, with new material this time instead of rehashing W&G. I heard that Marvel and Furth have scripted a total of 5 mini-arcs, this one being only the second. It sounds great!
Cheers,

I got to ask, have you finished Duma Key yet? What do you think? I just need chat about this with someone.
Also, I see you have 20th Century Ghosts in you queue. Let me know what you think about that one too... :-)
And The Long Road Home?? Lot's of great new stuff!

Now for my library, I just need to get some custom shelves built in like you have. My various stand up shelves are already overflowing. It's not as nice as I would like them to be. But one of these years I will get that done!
So, NO, I never did get the Secretary Of Dreams 1. I was going to buy it on Amazon, they were actually listing them new for weeks, when the book first came out, for about $46. When I actaully went to purchase it, they were gone! And right now the $75 is just too much to spend on one book. My wife would have my head! :-) With the new house and all the associated expenses... I'm probably goign to have to suck it up and buy them for around $100 a piece when I can actually afford it!
I'm still debating as to whether or not to pick up the DT comic hardcover. I probably will eventaully, but I do already have two each of the comics, sketchbook, and guide. The art was amazing, no? But I was sad that there was no new material. All just re-hashing of DT:4. I heard rumors that mabye another arc was coming out in '08. Hopefully they will do some new work for that one. I personally would love to see an indepth look at the battle of Jericho Hill and the events leading up to it and after it.
Anyway, I'm about to finally pass 1000 books too! I probably only have another 200 to add and I will be done (if I don't buy any more). 132 books shared already! That's very cool.
Enjoy the holidays!

I just love your library! Do the two cuckoo clocks go off at the same time? I showed my daughter your album, and even she approved! Do you have an ugly floor lamp that had to be moved for the picture, or do you read by the room light? All you need are are floor lamp and a window seat cushion. The globes and leather wing chair are beautiful!

So you still need to enter a ton of books!? Wow... I'm finally getting close to being done with mine. (2 boxes left?) As a huge science fan, fiction and otherwise, it will be interesting to see how many more books we have in common.
We also probably would have more "favorite" authors if I listed them all, Bradbury and KSR just quikly naming a couple if see in your list... I was just trying to name a representative selection. :-)
So was HP worth it all? (don't give anything away!)
