Om mig Paul Thomas Mann was born on 6th June 1875 into an old merchant family in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck, Germany. Following and later eclipsing his older brother Heinrich Mann in a literary career, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929, principally in recognition of his popular achievement with the epic family saga Buddenbrooks (1900/1). Forced into exile in 1933, he moved to France, Switzerland and the United States of America. Stripped of his German citizenship, he became a citizen of Czechoslovakia and the United States of America. After an unfortunate encounter with HUAC, he returned to Switzerland in 1952, where he spent his remaining years. He died on 12th August 1955 and was buried in Kilchberg, Switzerland.

Paul Thomas Mann, geboren am 6. Juni 1875 in Lübeck als Sohn eines Kaufmanns und Senators. Seinem älteren Bruder Heinrich Mann folgend, schlug er die Schriftstellerkarriere ein. 1929 wurde er für seinen Familienroman "Buddenbrooks" (1900/1) mit dem Nobel-Preis für Literatur ausgezeichnet. Ab 1933 folgten unstete Jahre im Exil, in Südfrankreich, der Schweiz und den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Aus Deutschland ausgebürgert, nahm er zuerst die tschechoslowakische, dann die US-amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft an. Enttäuscht von den USA und nach einer Vorladung vor das Komitee für unamerikanische Aktivitäten, kehrte er 1952 nach Europa in die Schweiz zurück, wo er seinen Lebensabend verbrachte. Er starb am 12. August 1955 und wurde auf dem Friedhof in Kilchberg bei Zürich begraben.

Om mitt bibliotek The catalog represents Thomas Mann's private library, as held at the Thomas Mann Archive in Zurich, Switzerland. The collection encompasses the volumes the Mann family managed to transfer from Germany to Switzerland in 1933 (the recent returns by the Bavarian State Library are not yet included) as well as the volumes Thomas Mann added during his Swiss years. Most of the catalog's publication dates lie between the 1930's and the 1950's, giving us a view of the writer's library in his later years.

Thomas Mann did not catalog his books, but ordered them according to his writing projects. The collection is kept in the original eleven racks. Clockwise it starts with books about "Lotte in Weimar" in Rack 1-3 (signatures 3000). Rack 4-6 collect books associated with "Doktor Faustus" (signatures 4700-4900). Rack 7 is filled with collected works (signatures 200-600), while all of Thomas Mann's own publications are found in Rack 9. Rack 10 and 11 cover "Joseph and his brothers" (signatures 2000-2400).

Der Katalog spiegelt Thomas Manns Privatbibliothek des Thomas-Mann-Archivs wider. Die Bestände stammen einerseits aus der 1933 aus Deutschland geretteten Bibliothek Thomas Manns (die neu aus der Bayrischen Staatsbibliothek zurückgegebenen Werke sind noch nicht erfasst) andererseits aus den von Thomas Mann bis zu seinem Tode gesammelten Werke seiner Schweizer Jahre. Die vorwiegend in den Dreißiger bis Fünfziger Jahren erschienenen Werke weisen die Bibliothek als jene des alten Schriftstellers aus.

Thomas Mann katalogisierte seine Bücher nicht, sondern ordnete sie thematisch nach seinen Buchprojekten. Die Bücher sind in den elf originalen Regalen in etwa thematisch aufgestellt: Von der Türe links im Uhrzeigersinn beginnen Regale 1-3 mit Lotte in Weimar (Signaturen um 3000), Regale 4-6 mit Doktor Faustus (Signaturen um 4700-4900). Regal 7 enthält Gesamtausgaben (Signaturen 200-600). In Regal 9 befinden sich alle eigenen Werke von Thomas Mann. In den Regalen 10 und 11 stehen Bücher zu Joseph und seine Brüder (Signaturen um 2000-2400).
