Captain's Fury is also amazing. I can't pick a favorite between it and Cursor's Fury. Cursor's I loved every single moment. Captain's I never didn't like it, I just wasn't as in love with EVERY page like with Cursor's, but there are moments in Captain's that just blew me away. When you've finished with Captain's jump into the two message boards titled "Codex Alera - Tavi - Spoilers" and "Captain's Fury." We'd welcome another voice on these topics. These also pretty well describe what I'm talking about, though I've posted on a bunch of other boards. Join us in our obsession of Tavi!!

Hello. I saw that you'd read the first three of the Codex Alera series. Weren't they utterly amazing? Have you read Captain's Fury yet? Do you think you have a favorite between the Dresden files and the Codex Alera series? 0:-)

Hey Hun,

How is everything going? Long time I didn't check my LT and posted my books. I stopped buying because I have the tendency to buy and not read, I know you are refraining me from buying books and I've been good :) I finished Darkfever, Its a great book can't wait for the second one to come out. I will wait on the paperback to come out. I don't know what to read next. I'm between mistery and Scien/Fic. I'm thinking to start both in the same time. When I decide I'll let you know. Its hard now because I started school again and time is everything.

Rowan Gant is a Wiccan. So is the author - I think he pretty much describes himself. Rowan Gant is sensitive to the "Other Side", i.e. the dead can contact him. He ends up trying to solve wrongful deaths, mostly connected with serial killers. The books aren't overly "fantastic" or "supernatural". Sellars tries to ground the whole thing in the actual Wicca. It's obviously still fiction and he doesn't claim it's for real.

IMO the first 2 books or so are not actually written that well, it's all full of too many flowery adjectives and adverbs and the description of Rowan Gant's wife just gets annoying. Many other people that I shared the books with, felt the same way. But once you get past that, the books are really good. I am now up to #7 (I think) - or is it #6?

Thanks!! I laugh when I tell people I'm a readaholic, but it's really true. This year I determined to keep count. So far in 2008, I've read 132 books of varying length and different genres. I'm not sure what that says (you're the one interested in psyches!) but I'm sure it says something!!

I usually have 3-4 going at one time, from different genres so I don't get bored.

Oh don't beleive a word that Amy says!!! LOL! I NEVER twisted her arm...I just gently proded her with a sharp, pointy stick and gave her a gift subscription! Eventually you'll see Booklover over here too, but she will be under the name Dearheart.

Thanks for the recommendations! I have read the first one of the Dresden Files and liked it. Have you ever read any of the Rowan Gant books by M.R. Sellars?

I am trying very hard, not to get hooked on another series - I can't get any of them here, lots of mail gets lost on the way to me and it's just a lot of hassle... Plus I have a ton of books on my shelf....

Maybe I look them up, before I go home in July... ;)

So far 2008 was not great for book. I am enjoying the Kitty Norville series. I've read the first three so far.

And I just read the second Mercy Thompson book by Carrie Vaughn, Blood Bound. That was quite nice as well.

Hi-
For science fiction, I recommend anything by David Brin. Dan Simmons has written in just about every genre, but his science fiction is particularly good. My all-time favorite author is Harlan Ellison. You can't go wrong with any of his short-story collections. For mystery/thriller, it sort of depends on what genre you're looking for. I'm a big fan of William G. Tapply (the Brady Coyne series). Stephen White has some excellent books, and I find he's getting better as he goes along. Some newer authors I really like are Karin Slaughter and Julia Spencer-Fleming, especially the latter. Let me know if you have any questions about particular authors in my library.

Hi hi - Jasper Fforde is a really fun author. Lost in a Good Book is the sequel to The Eyre Affair which might be a better place to start but if you're not too concerned about reading things in order, all the books are great. Also, his other series starts with The Big Over Easy and is also really funny. Hope you enjoy his stuff! -el :)

Thanks for the comments about my library. It includes books from more than fifty years of reading. The novels you recommended are two of my favorites. I am currently in a group rereading The Brothers Karamazov (for about the fifth time), and David Copperfield is my favorite among Dickens' novels (Great Expectations and Bleak House are close behind). Another couple of my all time favorite novels are All Passion Spent by Vita Sackville-West and The Leopard by Guiseppe di Lampedusa.

as to the 'discipline' thing, have you ever read about the moanstic life, the portions of the day set aside for certain things to do? I grew up in a monastery, and by following "the discipline', (and this is comething that you can craft to fit your lifestyle), by following your 'discipline' it makes your life a little more ordered and accessible for those stolen moments. I still read my 'daily office' every morning upon awakening, and then I notice that my day proceeds much better.. Another thing I try to do is to do one small crossword a day. Better if it is done in the morning, gets those synapses firing!!...but if not over trea or coffee, then somewhere during the day, before bed...just a small one, no need to tacle the NYT sunday version.

By following my particular discipline I have time for my professional life, my personal life, my private, my public, all the meetings, the committees, the whole gamut.

Give it a try...I thik you'll find that it's not as structured as it sounds initially.....In this manner I can lead my perfect-ed life...a concept of thomas moore, author of the care of the soul. Live as openly and as honestly as you can...today...not perfect...but try for perfect-ed.....and if not today?...then there is always tomorrow......

Hi Tinaz - I see you added me to your interesting libraries. We have 51 great books and 7 favorite authors in common! It looks like you're pretty into the Dresden Files. I've only recently discovered Jim Butcher (I'm catching up on the series, only read 1-3) but I'm really impressed so far. Nice to "meet" you and happy reading!

Thanks for adding my library as an interesting one. What led you to pick my library as interesting? Would you recommend any favorite authors? While I noticed we have few books in common I am reading one, Hard Times by Dickens, right now along with several others not on your list. I also just finished reading Ninety-Three by Victor Hugo and would highly recommend it.

I find that by having several books 'in progress' at various places, enables me to steal a few moments here and there throughout the day. Then when my attention is fully enraptured, then I do not feel quite so guilty for doing nothing except making a pot of ginger peach tea and enjoying the pages as they slip through my fingers like leaves on a crisp fall day. If you are jealous of my collection or time, then you would positivly detest my brother. He is an abbot in a monastery in New Mexico, and an insomniac...so he reads all the time. Anything amd everything. Perhaps it runs in the family...reading that is. Both of my parents were never allowed to go to any type of formal schooling...so they had to rely on the children to help them in matters of reading and such. I suppose that is why all three of us have found ourselves in some type of book related careers, myself? I work in a public library.

Try taking a few minutes here and there for the quality reading...and intersperse it with your required reading and test taking...a bit of an oasis filled with words to make the day go by easier....

Thirteen Moons...I think that is the title, from Frazier, the Author of Cold Mountain, great book, and when I listened to it, the reader was excellent also. Also re-reading Julian Jaynes "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind'... very enlightening...to me anyway, and as an after-dinner mint have been going over "The River That Flows Uphill: A Journey from the Big Bang to the Big Brain" by William H. Calvin. And for pure pleasure, while enjoying a small glass of port after dinner...(I am nothing if not lazy and content when I read purely for pleasure...have been browsing through "Glances Backward: An Anthology of American Homosexual Writing, 1830-1920". I tend to read multiple titles throughout the day, never without something to read or listen to...fiction, nonfiction, prof. journals, etc....Have to keep those synapses firing....lol

What about you???Inquiring fans want to know????

So you think that my collection is rather interesting?...Esoteric, enigmatic, always in a state of flux, as it were? I thank you for considering my small collection to be somewhat interesting. Unfortunately, I see a pareing down of my nutritional and some travel narratives as I am moving from a 4 BR 2 story colonial to a 2 BR townhouse.....ackkk!...I hate getting rid of books.....Hmmm???Perhaps I can make a sofa of books, and the end tables of books and.......ah well, once a biblioholic...always a bibilioholic.....

Your collection is interesting and intriguing also. How long have you been an avid reader/collector? Any particular favorites that you could not possibly part with? One particular title that could get you through a week long storm...with no power, no electricty? Reading and cooking by candlelight?

I always revert to Proust's Rememberance of Things Past...I know it seems tedious to some, but when read and shared by candlelight...you are drawn into his world....an amzing book. Too bad too many people are 'forced' to read it as a collegiate requirement...but then again...it does introduce the student to his work...that they may never has discovered.
