Om migMy earliest memories are of my childhood small-town library where the floors were wide, wooden planked and the walls were high -- reaching to the top of the building where dusty windows let in a speck of light. Alice Blake, the town librarian was my first hero. She patiently taught me to read and I spent many Saturday mornings in her company.

My love of learning influenced my career choice as a publications adviser at a university in Bethlehem, PA.

Hi Linda,

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2010.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you'll be reading next year.

xoxo - caroline
Hi Linda,

I collected my mail today from the Post Office and received 'The Wayward Muse' and your card. Thank you so very much for the book. I'm looking forward to reading it.

Wishing you a great holiday season and a very very Merry Christmas!

xoxo - caroline
Hey, Linda! I'm feeling much better. I'm going to be starting classes again in January at the local community college, which is a lot less pressure and they are much more understanding of students with disabilities. So that's exciting!

How are you doing?

Hope you're having a happy holiday season, as well!

Love,
Marcia
Linda,

That's so sweet to hear. Please do jump into discussions on my thread. We're really very fun-loving (and not too hot under the collar or serious) there. That's the way I like it.

Hope you and your loved ones enjoy a safe and happy holiday season!

All the best,

Madeline
Hi, Linda!

Just a reminder: The Missouri Readers will start discussing The Death of Sweet Mister by Daniel Woodrell next Monday (12/28)! Come visit with your questions and comments!

Have a wonderful Christmas, my friend!
Thanks for your comment! I have a thread in the 50-book challenge but I read way more than 50 books a year, so maybe I will join the 75-book challenge for 2010. Thanks for the invite, and Merry Christmas to you! :-)
Hello Linda,

I have recently finished writing book number three!
I have sent it to an agent who requested that I send it to him.
His initial reaction was that it was "an impressive piece of writing."!

Have a good holiday.

Hey Linda--THanks for checking in again. Ribs seem to be healing well. Only very occasional twinges, so I should be good to go board again in January. I started running -- have to counteract all that stuffing and those candy canes somehow! Tried to add Concubine to my list, but got the neverending "I am working on it" computer circle. Will try again after this message. :) Cheers!
Thank you Linda.
Hi Linda! Thanks for asking how I am doing. Healing slowly but surely. Hope another three weeks will do it 'cause I want to get out on the slopes again during the holidays. Love your library! I am afraid to look much more -- THE LIST goes on and on and my "already owned but awaiting my eyes" piles are all leaning precipitously!
Linda;
Thank you to one of the kindest women on L.T.
Your care and concern help me make it through.
And we will get through.
btw, Chrissy is now home is Coffman Cove, Ak. So we can concentrate on Dad (in-law). Things will work out. They always work out to the good of the Lord. We just don't always understand.
Thank you again for the sisterly love and kindness,
warm hug,
belva
Hey, Linda, I'm guessing those are your grandkids. What cuties. How nice that you could have an early Christmas with them. I came to your profile page to send you a friend request. You have so many that I might get lost in the pack.

I see one of your favorite books for the year is Here If You Need Me. Wasn't that an inspiring story? I have lent my copy out to several friends and they have all enjoyed it. ~Donna~
Hi Linda

Hope you had a lovely time with your family.

Just to let you know that I have sent "The Next Queen of Heaven" off to you, but I'm afraid they said it won't arrive until the new year now as I didn't have enough on me to send it airmail when I was at the post office, so it's gone by surface mail. Fingers crossed that the uk/us postal systems are more efficient than they say they are... Hope you enjoy it anyway!

Fliss
Hi Linda

Just a quic hello ...
and letting yu know that I am sending energy your way...
hope all is well..

Linda,

You pass that place every time you go to the library?

Oh, that is just too cool!

Have a wonderful holiday season!
Greetings Linda,

My home page photo is relatively new, the Friday after Thanksgiving. The snow soon melted and has not returned since, although from all reports, that may change this week.

I'm in northeast Ohio, the way I drive, about 1 hour from Cleveland. We are in a semi rural area and the folks out here are a really special, caring, concerned bunch. It's not that way everywhere you go, I guess we just lucked out. Do I like Ohio? It's all I know. From what I've seen every town has its ups and downs. But I believe your heart is where your children are and that's what's important.

Have a great week.....Lynda
Hi Linda,

Hope you're enjoying your visit. Take your time about sending the book because I'm still traveling and won't get home for another 2 weeks.

Safe travels home on Monday. I hope you don't get hit by alot of snow along the way.

take care and thanks again
caroline
Hi, Linda. The book arrived today. It looks like a quick read, but at this point in the semester, I doubt I'll have time to get to it until grades have been submitted. My box from BookCloseouts also arrived, but I haven't opened it to take a look at the Lizzie Siddall book yet.

Thanks again,
Deborah
Oooh, how exciting! Yep, my Wishlist is all books I don't currently have, but would like to read...

You are very kind!
Linda, you are such a sweetheart - thanks for that comment; it really made me smile!

Hope you have (have had) a great trip to Ohio.

Hugs back,
R/FT
Hi, Linda

Congratulations on a hot review of "Dark Places". I read that book this summer just after it was published and also enjoyed it very much. If it is really possible to enjoy such a tale. I see that you've also added "Sharp Objects", which the Missouri readers group read last year. It was also very good, although I think I preferred Dark Places. I'll be interested in your reaction to it.

Gillian Flynn is a native of Kansas City and did a lot of public appearances and interviews here to promote the book. One of the comments of hers that I liked best (can't remember where I saw it, maybe even in the book) was to express thanks to her husband who knows how she thinks but is still willing to sleep beside her at night!

Congrats, again

Sandy
we're doing okay here -- how's your health? hope your holidays are shaping up nicely. thx for looking at my Thxgiving piece and the comments :)
I appreciate you!
Hi Linda--No snow here in Portland, but we went up to MT Hood and did some skiing and boarding. Course, I was trying to be a hot shot and work on my 360s and took a serious dive. I thought I broke some ribs, put I just managed to damage the surrounding cartilage and get some heavy bruising. And I was looking so good, too! I had linked about 5 together and then wham! Oh well. Should be good again in a week to 10 days. That will give me time to catch up on some reading. I have almost finished the Cry of the Sloth. It is definitely a book I will remember. More after I finish...
Linda,

Thanks! He is such a little joy. I'm looking forward this and many more Christmases to come. It's been a long time since we had little feet running around the house!

I hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful and the upcoming holidays be everything that you want them to be!

Carrie
Happy Thanksgiving! I felt much the same as you about The Wayward Muse--not a great book, but I learned a lot about several figures involved with the pre-Raphaelites. Thought you might like to know about another book that I just ordered from BookCloseouts (they are having a free shipping sale for orders over $35), Lizzie Siddall: Face of the Pre-Raphaelites. I'll let you know when it arrives if it is any good.
Linda, Just wanted to stop in for a quick visit and wish you a happy Thanksgiving with your loved ones. Thanks for being a faithful follower of my thread and also for your wonderful recommendations and reviews. Hope all is well in your world - we're off to Niagara Falls this weekend to kick off the holiday season.
Great picture on your profile, flowers are gorgeous and mans best friend looks like the guardian of your roost. Take care, Lynda
Hi Linda,

Wishing you a very happy Thanksgiving! Hope you have a great time with your nearest and dearest.

xoxo - caroline
Thanks for the note regarding one of my favorite authors, Adriana Trigiana. (I hope I spelled her name correctly.) I became interested in her as soon as I saw Big Stone Gap was about to be published, and I pre-ordered that book based only on its title. I lived in Eastern Kentucky and the Big Stone Gap area of Virginia as a child, so her Big Stone Gap trilogy resonated with me as Queen of the Big Time did with you. I enjoyed Queen of the Big Time for the strong female character and sense of family. I think everybody enjoys reading about a locale and people that they know.
Congrats on your hot review! This Strout is going onto my pile for 2010. I've been working my categories today, and decided on one for Maine/New England....this will fit well.

Hope you're doing well, and wish you great holidays! We are thinking SNOW, but so far none has appeared.
Awww, Simon is adorable! Thanks for pointing him out!
Thanks Linda. That was a sweet little read wasn't it. I just read your review and yo really nailed it. I thumbed it.
Hi Linda - You've been so nice to ask about how my tenure process is coming, so I wanted to share some good news. The department recommended me for tenure!!! The decision still has to be approved by the College of Business, the Provost, and the Board of Regents (and those steps won't be completed until the end of April), but this is a good first step!!!
I hope that you have a chance to relax and enjoy the upcoming holiday!

Best,
Amy
Linda,

Thanks for stopping by. I'm very proud of my little Jackson, my first.
I get to see him next week, the kids are coming north for the Holiday! I haven't seen him other than on the computer and pictures since July.
That's for the Hot review notice... I really enjoyed that book!
You and yours have a great holiday!

Cheli
Hi Linda - Well let's see - Copper is a 7 yr old female golden retriever (she'll be 8 in Jan.) She's smart and sweet and can be trusted around anybody. We both volunteer in the pet therapy program at our local hospital. She loves to swim in the summer and play in the snow in the winter. Of course she's very spoiled and we love her. Whenever I'm messing around with pictures on our main computer, I like to change her picture on my profile.

I remember you said Whisper was your favorite Bichon. Do you have a dog now?
Hi Linda,
I've found the book I was thinking about...
[Bright-sided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America]
Lorraine
Aww - thank you! That's really sweet and has made me smile.

Here's the Waterhouse:

http://www.royalacademy.org.uk/exhibitio...

For at least a fortnight I've had a nasty nagging feeling that there was *something* that finished in early Sept that I was meaning to see and couldn't for the life of me think what it was - like an itch that you can't reach! Relieved to see I have til the 13th, so I may be able to go from work next week if I'm lucky.

if I do get there, I'll be sure to send you a proper update.

Rx
Hey, Linda. Here's just a few of my husband's latest favorites on WW 2:
[Band of Brothers] by Stephen Ambrose
[Beyond Band of Brothers] by Major Dick Winters
[The Conquerors] by Michael Beschloss
[Both Sides of the Beach] by Edmund Blandford
[The Last Escape] by John Nichol and Tony Rennell
[The Last Battle] by Cornelius Ryan

and his latest favorite: [The Day of Battle] by Ridk Atkinson. Appaerently this is part two of a trilogy, the first title being [Army at Dawn].

The book links don't seem to be working here, so I included all authors. Hope this includes some your husband hasn't yet read.
Bo
Whisper,

I saw you are from Bethlehem. My parents live there and I call it my 2nd home. I'm guessing by your email address you work at Lehigh. I enjoy visiting at the holidays w/ all the "Christmas City's" decorations.
