Om migSome of my earliest memories are of my Mom reading to me from "The How and Why Library" (I still have those books, although volume one is pretty torn up), and my Dad reading the Oz books to me. A favorite treat was being taken to the big Salvation Army store in downtown Los Angeles where we kids were turned loose in the Book section, to pick out whatever we wanted. I still have quite a few of those books, too - the ones I didn't wear out. I've never outgrown my love of kid's books, especially the beautifully illustrated ones. Now I like to read them to my grandchildren.

My husband and I have been married for 47 years, and we have lived in Iowa for the last 35 or so. He is not quite such a reader as I am but he is a strong supporter of my habit. He has quite a collection of computer books which he has picked up second hand when we are out looking in used book stores. They will eventually get catalogued too.

Om mitt bibliotekFinding Library Thing on the web in September of 2007 was really exciting! Since then, most of my spare time goes into cataloging books. Most of the books in the catalog are books we own. The exceptions are books I read in 2007 and 2008 which were borrowed and returned; and some that are at my parents' house. Each book is tagged with a location that is followed by a reverse quote mark (`). The
mark is used to define the end of the information for each book so that I can easily add books to my own listing in our word processor. I LOVE the idea of the tags! The books I read/am reading in 2007/2008 are the ones tagged with that year.

Right now I'm in the process of revising my ratings so they mean more to me; in other words, how much pleasure I received from that particular book. For fiction, my top favorites are marked with five stars. Above average books are marked with four stars. Three stars are given to the books that were enjoyable, but forgetable. Two stars are given to books that are disappointing, and one-star books are those I didn't finish. The ones with no stars at all I haven't read yet. Non-fiction is even more subjective - The more I like having the book around, or the more I use it, the higher the rating.

I'm reading Adam right now--I'm about half way through. I was planning on bringing it down when I visit you in September. I look forward to getting Kiss, too, because I definately want to read it. I knew the new Fowl book was out...I'm curious how it will be.

Hi, the title I was thinking of is the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz. The first one is called Stormbreaker, and seems to be quite popular among boys.

http://www.librarything.com/catalog/cladnr I also recommend seeing this library. It was apparently compiled for a young teen boy. It is a Christian library. I came across it by accident when looking at other people who owned the Christian YA sci-fi book I'm sending you. Some of the books in this library don't have very good ratings, though, so be sure to check out the ratings before buying any of them!

You should also have him read the Foo books, those are definately targeted at boys (kind of gross boy sense of humor, etc.)

The Hunger Games is also a short series of dystopic novels that he might find interesting, but, again, I haven't read them yet so this is just hear-say.

You mentioned he liked graphic novels. Did you know that Ted Dekker's circle trilogy has been made into a graphic novel? You might try those.

There is also a series called 39 clues which is very popular. The first book in it is called the Maze of Bones, by Rick Riordan. I wondered if you were thinking about that when you mentioned Bag of Bones yesterday. It would definately be the type of book a young teen boy would enjoy.

Speaking of Rick Riordan, you could give him the Percy Jackson books--I sent you the first one some time ago. I didn't like it enough to pay for the rest of the series. But a young teen boy probably would. Again, boyish sense of humor.

Hopefully that gives you some ideas.

I don't understand why you are ninth on my most similar libraries, but I am not even on your top 50. How does that work? My goal is to get you to be number one one mine--I cringe every time I add a book that someone above you has, but I guess that happens. :)

Regarding your review of King Matt the First: yes, there was a sequel, but I don't think it was ever published in English. I've read about it (haven't read the book itself as I can't read Polish) and as I recall, Matt's kingdom became a republic and he ended up dying in an accident.

Thanks for your kind welcome Anne of Iowa. I agree, our the similarities between our libraries was much greater when I'd only listed the last several books I've read. Now that I've gone back a few years I've got a bunch of random ones in there! I expect to finish The Mermaid Chair today. I agree that the mix between Roman Catholic tradition and mythology is quite interesting! More realistic, if you ask me. Too many people forget that pagan religions and beliefs can be fundamental to Christian beliefs--although not to the extent of actual mythology. But I must say, I am not a fan of reading books about women who have affairs on perfectly good husbands!

Hey Anne,

Thanks for the nice thoughts. Isn't LibraryThing a nice little community? I took a look through your reviews and the books we have in common, and you're right, there are some common threads there, although I have no Iowa kin. And it's nice to hear from one of the few people who know and appreciate "Barnaby"; I usually get blank stares when I mention the strip, even to my fellow comic strip fans... not that the topic comes up all that often.

It'd be great if you could check out Gail's website and book; she was so excited when she saw her book mentioned in my profile, but so far nary a nibble. Oh, and I'm sure you know about Ottumwa's most famous (fictional) resident...

Oh, and congratulations on your marital longevity. I married late, and am celebrating 15 years with Nancy this September. I love marriage, but I'm not sure I would have appreciated it if I'd married younger.

Thanks for writing. I so loved the trilogy, I reread them again a few years back, and loved it all over again. I remember feeling as if I were living in the woods with that family. I also lived with the main character (whose name I don't recall) as she witnessed the changing times from that cabin in the woods to a town where she was so old she had outlived all the people she had ever known and loved. I really enjoy reading books that honor those who came before us. Whether it's fiction or nonfiction, these books always remind me that life in a continum of real people just like us. I think that while we're wrapped up in our own lives, we sometimes tend to forget that. Right now I'm listening to "Mayflower" while driving in my car. It's a weird kind of wakeup call to be cursing traffic congestion while listening to the narrator talking about the hardships that the pilgrims had to endure.
