Hi Liz,

I'm delighted that you liked your presents! I found The enchanted April and the Margery Sharp one on a shelf of Virago books in an obscure corner behind the desk in Skoob Books in London (a haunt of mine). Seeing that you liked memoirs and had some Penelope Lively, I had her memoir in mind (though I haven't read it), and came across it in Daunt's, another favourite shop, just before I was about to wrap your present. So it was a last-minute extra!

Hope you enjoy them!

Nicky
A package arrived at my door and I opened it without thinking. Silly me. Thank you!! What perfect choices. I've been wanting to read The Elegance of the Hedgehog for ages. And, I've heard so much about Lois McMaster Bujold, I'm really glad you've shared one of your favourite books with me. The Curse of Chalion sounds amazing. I love the write-up on the back: "...And only by employing the darkest, most forbidden of magics can Cazaril hope to protect his royal charge - an act that will mark the loyal, damaged servant as a tool of the miraculous...and trap him, flesh and soul, in a maze of demonic paradox, damnation, and death." Lovely language :-) I don't think this will be waiting on Mount TBR very long at all!

Thank you Liz, very much, you've made SantaThing great fun. Christmas has started early! And the New Year will be off to a great start. Woo Hoo!!

I hope you and your family have a very merry Christmas,

all the best,
Katherine

p.s. we share some interesting books don't we? I don't know too many who have An Exaltation of Larks, or Are Women Human? I love my 100 English Folksongs, my mom used to sing the songs and I'd accompany her on my flute :-)
Butterfly Laughter

In the middle of our porridge plates
There was a blue butterfly painted
And each morning we tried who should reach the
butterfly first.
Then the Grandmother said: "Do not eat the poor
butterfly."
That made us laugh.
Always she said it and always it started us laughing.
It seemed such a sweet little joke.
I was certain that one fine morning
The butterfly would fly out of our plates,
Laughing the teeniest laugh in the world,
And perch on the Grandmother's lap.

Thank you for finding my library interesting! I see we are both fans of Georgette Heyer and Mary Stewart? Good stuff! I started reading them as a child, and happily re-read them still.

Victoria
Hi;
Mark and I have been discussing the possibility of another group read in November and want your input. We have narrowed it down to two books at this point. "The People of the Book" by Geraldine Brooks and "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield. So chat it up with friends or us and let us know if you are up for it and what you think. Probably the same plan as with "Pillars of the Earth" which seemed to work out perfectly for almost all of us.
Think it over and give one of us a shout.
hugs and looking forward to hearing from you,
belva
Thank you for the interesting library add! I'm going through your own interesting library and it's really cool
such marvelous quotes on the silly book game i *had* to look up *fire and ice*.
'Sophie Rose, a tough and determined newspaper reporter' and 'brash but sexy Jack MacAlister'. *chortle* what a kick.

you and the novels make such dynamic duos. since i don't care for romance novels myself, i find that your enjoyment of them gives me the best of two worlds: i can avoid reading them and i get witty quotes.

thanks.
Not a problem at all. I have seen you around many a time. So glad you wanted to join.
Thank you for joining
Inviting some people to the thread I just started. Thought it might be of interest to you.

Dear Liz,

Got the book the Gentlewomen in the mail today. Thanks so much! I'd forgotten all about it so it's such a nice surprise. Beautiful cover too!

Astrid
Liz, I am slow in my thanks but This House of Brede made it safely to me last week. I was the perfect week for it I was feeling swamped and harried and this looks like a book of contemplation. It has long been on my wishlist so I am delighted to have it in any form and I look forward to slowing down and reading it. Thank you again for sending it.

Fondly, Maren
Glad it made it safely!
Enjoy, dear Liz.

Apparently, the prize sponsor from the last read never got my email message with your shipping info and tea choice! Whoops!

Anyway, it has been re-sent today, and many apologies for the delay.

Sorry for the delay in getting it in the mail. So glad the PO was super fast!

Many years ago, I lived in SF and in San Rafael and I MISS MISS MISS
the plethora of bookstores of the Bay area! One of San Luis Obispo's
best used bookstores, Leon's, closed last May and oh what a sad day
that was. Must make plans to hop a train and descend upon Green Apple, etc.!
(I just know there are Viragos lurking there!)

Have a great weekend, Liz!

Cate
My Brilliant Career arrived yesterday, with your lovely card! Thank you, thank you!
Glad to know it arrived safely!
:-))
Thank you, Liz, I would love it, stain or not!!!!

Paola :-))
Liz - Wow, what a great find on My Antonia! I really enjoy Cather, especially her later, sparer writing - I think Death Comes for the Archbishop is my favorite. I'm definitely a modernist at heart.

Do you do a lot of gardening? It must be wonderful to be in a place where you can do it almost all year long. I'm just at the beginning of planning my vegetable garden, and am hoping to finally install my first native garden area this spring. Right now I'm in the "look through garden catalogs and dream" stage of the year, which in Minnesota lasts for months!

Tracy
Merry Christmas!

Thank you so much for the SantaThing books! I'm going to read The Game of Kings first. They both look wonderful and I can't wait to really get into them!

Both books were great picks for me!

I hope you got everything you wanted.

Thanks again,
~Jolene

PS: I think you and I have one of the most esoteric matched share-owner lists that I've seen on LT! :)
You are cordially invited to join our new Generic Book Group and to take part in our group reads:

Thanks so much for letting me know about them. I truly appreciate it.

Cindy
Thank you so much for letting me know about Nocturnal Poetics and Fatal Women. I am watching the auctions. I might see if I can get them to go down in price a bit.

cindy
Oh,thank you for the Ibbotson suggestion. When I worked in a bookstore, I frequently thought about buying her books, but never got around to it. Speaking of Cinderella variants, have you heard of Robert San Souci's Cinderella Skeleton ? It's a sweet version that happens to feature skeletons in a graveyard. I don't have it ye, but someday I will.
Hi
Just to drop a thank you note, I've received the book...
Let me know if there's something I could do for you ;)
Yeah, it almost sounds like a compliment.

Pretty word.
Oh look, you are a palindrome :).

I am actually rereading "The Shadow of Suspicion" right now, it helps me get back to sleep when I wake up in the middle of the night.

The tag "sister book" means it's a book my sisters and I shared when we were teenagers mostly--we checked them out from the library and took turns reading them. I have three sisters, all within six years of age from the oldest to the youngest. We still reread these books occasionally.

Emily has a word for colors on almost every page!

I am thinking about trying to start a thread on things I like about Emily Loring.
Sorry for the million+ repeat comments you got from me.
I discovered a new LibraryThing bug (ahem).

Hope you can join us for the Pirate Read-we have lots of prizes to give out. :)

Do come! 'Way back when Santa Cruz was the-place-to=meet you said you would take me there!~~~~Hope to see you Sunday in Pleasanton.
Just a note to say that I mailed Mary Lavelle from the post office today. I hope you enjoy it.

-Jennifer
One more note. I noticed you have several books by Georgette Heyer, whom I recently discovered. I am currently reading Friday's Child and enjoying it a lot, and I recommend it heartily!
:-))
Hello back to you, dear Liz!
I am glad the book arrived safely. Since you are interested in Australian women writers, you should (if you have not done it already) check out Katherine Susannah Prichard, Eleanor Dark, Miles Franklin (I am sure you know her), Dorothy Hewett, Marjorie Barnard. These are those that come to mind right off the bat, but if you take a look at my catalogue you will find much more.
For the Italian fairy tales, take a look at www.Hoepli.it
They have a large selection and ship abroad. Also, do not forget to look for "Fiabe Italiane" collected by Italo Calvino, a real gem, or "Novelle della Nonna" by Emma Perodi.
Let me know if I can be of further help.

Paola :-))
Thanks for adding me to your interesting libraries. I notice we have a lot of interests in common and read very widely. You are the first library I've visited that had any classical music books. I also didn't realize there a classical music group. I plan to check that out. I may meet you there!
Because you own this vintage cookbook set, I invite you and the 38 other owners of this cookbook to a group talk in COOKBOOKERS, on META GIVEN'S MODERN ENCYCLOPEDIA OF COOKING. I'm curious about how you came to own this cookbook and what is your favorite part about the set. Thank you! See http://www.librarything.com/talktopic.ph...
I just want to let you know that I have scanned and uploaded my cover for The Constant Nymph, and since you have the same edition (same ISBN) as mine, I thought you might want to know that a correct cover for the Dial Press edition is now available.

Enjoy
Laura
Have sent 'Elizabeth and Her German Garden' today by airmail.
I hope you enjoy it.
Regards
Valerie
Hi! I assume you live in SF. . . If all the GreenDragons come to Santa Cruz can you take me with you? (I'd come to SF on BART from Walnut Creek).
I received 'Love' today! I love the reassuring thump a book makes when it falls through my letter slot! Looks fantastic! Can't wait to start reading!!!
Thanks so much for sending it all the way to London!
heather
Excellent! Thanks Liz, I'll let you know when it arrives! I can't wait!
heather
Thanks for your comments about my folklore collection1 I have had an absolute passion for folklore and myth since I first learned to read, so I have been building my library for decades now, but I am really going a bit nuts lately since discovering how easy it is to find out of print titles online. There have been a few titles recently that I have had an incredible time finding, but I've found that with time and ingenuity, you can really find almost anything. If I have any titles you are searching for, and you want to know where I got them, please just let me know. I have discovered some sources that are really off the map.

Cindy
Good point! I've just put a notice on the Lionel Davidson author page, but the children's books were published as David Line. I'd been thinking I might look up some of Davidson's crime books given how much I love Under Plum Lake so I might just have to look into it :-)
Well caught! thanks very much for that. I did, of course, mean southern america. Please do let me know of any other mistakes you find. I'm just glad to know that there are people out there reading my reviews. That you mostly enjoy them is an added bonus!
Will do! Hope you had a great day!
:o)
Clare
Aviddiva thank you for adding me to your interesting libraries. I am happy to return the compliment because we seem to have a shared interest in Children's literature and Virago Modern Classics.
You were the first to request On the Side of the Angels, so it's all yours. Just leave your address on my profile page and I'll get it on its way in a day or two. Enjoy!
You're welcome.

I do hope it came across as a polite FYI, as Tim doesn't want us asking people to change their data, but I knew I would want to know, and your profile looked like you were as interested in the connections as much as the cataloging on LT.

Happy reading.
I saw your posts on the Complete Sentence Parlour Games discussion and just had to say that I love Mo Willems. He's come to Austin, Texas for book signings twice now and is so great to see in person.
Thanks! I think both have been on my unofficial, in-my-head TBR list for a while. I'll have to bump them up to higher priority! ;-)

~fd
Hi. Thanks to your recommendation, I just ordered A Man Lay Dead. I'll let you know how I like it.
We are almost neighbors (I'm in Walnut Creek) and we share Theodore Bonnet's "Mudlark," one of the most charming books I own. (When I wrote my review I grouped it with 2 others. . . think I'll go back and give it a solo as it deserves. . . or do you want to do that? Esta1923
Just wanted to thank you for being LT Secret Santa for my brother. I spoke with him last night and solved his latest mystery: he found an Amazon box at home Friday with the two books and was mystified as to why he should have received them. He even went so far as to think that maybe Amazon was sending bonus gifts to people who ordered from them - ha! ;-) I finally explained what I had done with LT and he was very impressed. He thinks the two choices look interesting and has moved them to the top of his TBR pile.

Thanks again!
Thanks for the tip on Amahl. Happy Holidays to you and yours. - Karen, aka Maggie1944
Nice idea on the 12 Days of Christmas, Diva! I'm enjoying it!

-Danny
Thanks for noting me in the "Interesting Libraries" box! I've looked at your page and see we do share several intersts. It would be interesting, to look at our libraries and see the ways we divetge. As a first step I enjoyed looking at your tqg and author clouds. Good reading to you! -- JLH
Inexplicably, I assumed our Richard wrote "Scarey" stories for young children, and having a nervous disposition I wasn't sure I could cope with them. The excellent "A tiger came to dinner" for example, gave me nightmares for a month, and whenever I read it, to the little ones, I have to take a tranquiliser first. Am I a spineless nincompoop or what?

I was mildly intrigued that the one and only book we SEEM to share, according to LT, is a title I don't possess, let alone list.
Spooky, I reckon.

It was good of you to acknowledge my response, and to qualify your aversion to writers I like. I am touched (but you can tell that already).

One of the things I take to, in "Wuthering Heights", say, is the strangeness of it, the wuthering involved (what a word!) The very fact that Cathy and Heathcliff are NOT easily identifiable with, or comforting exactly. I'm not sure that's what YOU look for in a book (frankly I doubt it) but it isn't what interests me (I prefer a sloppy joe to a close-knitted number, if I can put it like that.)
The moors seem to 'work' for the Brontes (esp Emily), much like the sea works for me; seen in a certain light (or night) the one thing they're NOT is predictable, or re-assuring.
I daresay this is a clumsy and jejune answer to your question; I'll try to give it deeper thought (I am always trying)

R.
Quel malheur!

I love "Wuthering Heights", and "Emma" has to be my favorite Austen.
Now I feel vaguely suicidal. Not your fault of course; I shouldn't be so sensitive or paranoid, but critics are always plotting against me and mine. undermining our judgement.

ps. I have never read (or seen) Richard Scarry's Best Storybook Ever (though it sounds as if I should've). According to the "Books You Share" feature, on the right, it is the one title we have in common. In fact, I have approx thirty from your (interesting) list - not counting all the Harry Potters - and particularly like Susan Cooper, Peter Beagle, and Madeleine L'Engle. So there!

pps. you have a neat name.
