I just discovered LibraryThing last night, and I am very excited about it.
What have you read lately that you really enjoy? I also love Alexander McCall Smith, but I can't get into the Scotland series.
Take Care,
Suzie

It looks like you have read a fair amount of Ellie's books, but not Inn at Lake Devine. I think I have read all of hers, and this one is one on the top of my list. I remember staying in bed in bad on a Saturday and reading it straight through.
Have you read Adam Langer? He wrote Crossing California. I haven't read him before, but am reading his novel that will be published in 2008 now and it is a smart comedy. So if his new work is any indication of the past, I think you would like him.
An older book, from 1998, that I remember loving for its lightness and fun is Mail by Mameve Medwed.
My favorite recent read - althougth maybe not as light as you wold like - is John Williams's Stoner. Highly recommened!
Please let me know what you go with, even if it is not one of my recs.
Best,

I am going to poke around in my library for a recommendation.
In the meantime, glad you like Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers. I did too. I happened upon in back in July - here is my review:
A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers… by Xiaolu Guo
She calls herself Z because nobody knows how to pronounce her name. Z travels from rural China to London, learning English along the way. Her explicit sexual awakening mirrors that of her growing understanding of languages and cultural differences. And yes, the story is told in the form of a dictionary. It may sound formulaic, but I found the novel creative and insightful.
Anyway, I will send another message with recs - haven't had a chance to look at your library, but if you haven't read much Elinor Lipman, should would be perfect.

I liked the last one too. I get galleys from the bookstore, so I can read things earlier. This one doesn't sound quite as exciting to me, but then again, it is not set in a bookstore!
I am currently reading the new Elizabeth Strout. She wrote Amy and Isabelle. I was looking for a fun and funny literary novel for the weekend (I have been in a slump) and someone at work handed this one to me. Pretty dark, actually - lots of mental illness - but I got taken in anyway.
The Great Man is up next for me. I will let you know how that is. I love things set in NY.

I see you just added Penelope Lively's Consequences. I started it last night and am enjoying it so far. I read most of what she writes.
What are you reading now?

Just poking through the new feature "new connections" and saw that we have a lot of the same books (130) and some of the same recent adds.
So I don't know if you need / want any recommendations, but I have a few that I think you would like, based on our similarities.
Astrid & Veronika by Linda Olsson (one of my favorites of the year, really validates women's friendships)
Have your read Balzac and The Little Chinese Seamstress from a few years back?
And Gail Tsukiyama - I have only read a few, but it appears that anything she writes gets great reviews.
What have you read recently that you loved?
Happy reading,
