I am actually pretty dismal in my musical knowledge, but getting better. I am primarily a film person.

Yeah, it is a bit obsessive, that's for sure. I actually stopped writing reviews, it was taking too much time. But I still watch the films, read the books and listen to the albums.

I adore Hawksley. My husband and I are big fans and go to all his concerts when he comes to Toronto. In fact, he proposed to me at a Hawksley concert (during "No Beginning and No End").
I went through your library to see what Canadian authors you already had books by.
I see that you have Fall on Your Knees by Ann-Marie MacDonald, unread. That is a fantastic novel. If you enjoy reading it I also suggest her next novel, The Way the Crow Flies which has similar themes.
I see that you have Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood, also unread. I have not read that particular novel but I have read The Handmaid's Tale and The Penelopiad and recommend them both.
The Lives of Girls and Women by Alice Munro is also quite good.
You may also enjoy Swann by Carol Shields.

just saw your two recommendations among the top 100 bks of/on women -- as i have read both, i thought you might enjoy reading one of my least popular books, Orientalism & Occidentalism: Is the Mistranslation of Culture Inevitable? It contains much readable sociolinguistics (though less surveys/research than Tannen's or Gilligan's work) and the main languages are Japanese and English and that is all -- yoroshiku

That is a distinct possibility. The AAUW book sale is one of my favorites. I also like to go to the one at the Martinsburg Mall that is sponsored by Newspapers in Education. The old Red Cross book sale here in Martinsburg was a good one, too. The Friends of the Shepherdstown Public Library have one too that usually has lots of good contemporary fiction. Oh, what the hell, I like them all. It's the only time that I can buy bags full of books and not feel the least bit guilty. 8>)

I guess reading depends on the child and the parent. Three of my four kids are big readers,the older ones all read to the youngest one, and I never monitor what they read- even if it is the Victoria's Secret Catalog ha ha.
With TV the way it is I doubt if much will be shocking to today's pre-teens. We all talk about what we are reading and it opens the doors for all of us to think about things. Some of the better books I have read were recommended by my high school boys (who are now both away at college). Teaching children to think is what is important, and if they are reading about genocide, or prostitution or what ever is controversial, then hopefully they are forming opinions and reformulating opinions as they mature.
I wouldn't give them a subscription to Penthouse, but I pretty much leave them to their own devices and they seem to make pretty good choices. But every parent needs to decide that for themselves, and consider the childs maturity level.
My mother banned Fanny Hill and The Godfather and I can still tell you what pages all the dirty stuff is on. If I tried to stop them from reading something I can guarantee it would be the book they would hide under the mattress. That's just the way kids are.

Yes I when I was reading "I know this much is true"...I wanted to find out why he named the book that. It was the very last sentence! I did start skimming over the parts that were about the grandfather who came over from Italy. I think it was italicized? I got a smidgen inpatient!

Can't wait until he comes out w/ ano work of fiction!

I saw your comment on a thread about Parnassus on Wheels by Christopher Morley and since I am not a member of that group, I thought I would comment here. I have read and enjoyed several Christopher Morley books, particularly that one. You might also check out The Haunted Bookshop. He was a fairly prolific writer who seems mostly forgotten now. Hope you enjoy it!

The truth is I just saw your profile page and your username (which is great by the way) and that quote just jumped into my head. I'm glad you liked it.
