Om mig I'm a science nerd / postmodern Christian / bibliophile and I aver that the absolute best thing about commuting via public transit is the vast amount of time in the day I get to spend reading! I dabble in writing and all sorts of crafty things (knitting, crochet, cross-stitch). I also love the Chicago Cubs - Yes, this is OUR year! (Come on, a hundred years is loooong enough.) I see that you recently read Austenland. I read recently as well...it was a fun read wasn't it?

Phew!!! I'm glad you liked SHADE (conversation about parents notwithstanding). It's funny... The whole parent situation was so much a part of the plot in my mind that I never even noticed the whole Star Wars connection until you mentioned it. Oh well. Too late to change anything now. Hopefully they'll get the pages in the right order.
I just looked through your book list again and discovered lots of books I'm going to have to go out and buy now. There go all my profits. :-)
Thanks for taking a chance on me!

Anyway, if I'm around in December, we should go see the movie. :P With Cedric Diggory. (Not with Cedric Diggory, of course, because he's dead, plus he'll eat all the popcorn.)
Tried to read your review, but the home computer is dumb and won't actually load reviews on this site. It does the same thing with TV listings on tvguide.com: just loads and loads and loads and goes nowhere. If I can get on another computer, though, I'll check it out. :)

Heehee, I was jumping around last night because of it. You were the first person I thought of when I saw who the comment was from. That was a wonderful book recommendation!
It sounds so nice reading a book with someone else! That must have been very special, especially as it's such a moving story. I had to stop reading for being all wet eyed and eyes streaming often toward the end as well. After I finished reading it, I tried to push it forward for suge to read soon as well. (It was her copy that I read.)
It's cool that your husband is from around the Fremont area, too. I've been in the S.F. bay area basically all my life, save for four years in Utah. We don't hear of too many books that take place in Fremont or my city, so it's kind of exciting. The only other book I've heard of that part takes place in Fremont is The Kite Runner.
The cover is very eye-catching. I remember looking up the book after seeing you mention it, and the instant I saw the cover, it drew my interest but also made me wonder if my mother would enjoy it because she loves wildlife and animals, too.
I looked up Patrick Carmen's site yesterday - it's very cool. I'm looking for Ginny Rorby's website on another tab. Here it is. Dolphin Sky looks interesting, and she has another book finished.
Thanks for the blog compliment! I'm glad you enjoyed Howl's Moving Castle, too. :)

I'm sort of behind on entering the books I read on my blog, so I only just got to entering the ones I read over the summer Tuesday night. When I went back tonight to write another entry, there was a comment...from the author of Hurt Go Happy!!
I'm still hoping no one is messing with me and pretending to be someone they're not. I was so excited I just had to share it with you. I know you really loved that book as well.
I didn't tell you, but Fremont, CA where they have the school for the deaf is like my backyard. It's the reason why I was able to take sign language in high school. When you walk on main streets in that city (like two miles from me), you can hear the sound of chirping birds while crossing the streets. I'm there all the time so it was really cool to see part of the book took place there.
Good luck with the review contest! I truely loved yours. I wasn't kidding when I said it was wonderful. I hope you win a prize!

You are very kind! Thanks so much for the book! I can't wait to read it. I can understand your opinion. At the same time, I would love to be able to surprise you someday with something, so thank you for the address.
Oh, I hope you finish it soon! There aren't that many people posting on that discussion thread yet. Some members are getting it from the library and foggi said she's waiting a week to buy it, I think. I can understand your wanting to avoid LT to not peek. I guess you won't read this till you return from reading the book. If that's not the case, however, stay strong! Don't peek!
I agree, the review contest will be very fun. I can't wait to read everyone's! So far from our group, only bib has written one and I already gave her a thumbs up. I must write mine today. It looks like a lot of the reviews have spoilers in them, so please don't read any till you finish your reading!
Happy reading! :)

I'm so glad you'll be reviewing Shade. Please let me know what you think -- even if you don't like it. Shade is kind of weird. It definitely isn't for everyone. I've already had two reviewers say they didn't understand it -- which kind of makes me worry. But I've also had reviewers say extremely, over-the-top good things about it.
Regardless of what you think about the book, you seem like my kind of reader. I'm a biochemist and a postmodern Christian and I love almost every one of the authors that you listed as favorites (those that I don't love I don't know about and will run out and buy their books as soon as I make my next deadline).
Looking forward to hearing from you,
John

The Charlemagne Pursuit is my ER book this month. I haven't read any of his books, but I'm glad to hear you've liked his other ones, since we have similar taste! These historical chase thrillers always sound good to me, but more often than not I end up disappointed, I keep trying though!

It looks like I have a copy of AIDS Orphans Rising on the way to me. I am excited. I would be happy to post a review of the book and I can try to remember to link it at Readers Without Borders. I am a member of that group too.
Where are your friends at for the summer? WE will be near Mwanza on Lake Victoria. We do not yet have a move date set but are excited to get there.

I'm glad you enjoyed LGW. The whole time I was reading it, my heart was on my sleeve for Dodge. Beddor did not execute the book as well as I wanted him to, but I love his ideas. The pool of tears being the vortex between worlds, the Cat... brilliant. I haven't read the second one yet. If you read it before I do, just tell me if you think I should continue with the series.

RE: Aquaintance, which part was your favorite? I loved the scene after her mother's death when she's all alone in the house and hungry. She finds her parent's love letters, reads them and then makes a fire using them as kindling. Talk about tugging on the heartstrings!
Yes, I just finished reading Rinaldi's Girl In Blue and would also recommend it. She's written a ton of stuff. I didn't like The Coffin Quilt but you might.
Take care!

I'm shamefacedly...
Hey. I took a year to review a Gerald Durrell.
...too bored by the book I was asked to review to get past the introduction.
Given that your book was Avoid Boring People, isn't it ironic? In fact, one of my favourite reviews so far is Danielle's review of Sleep Tight. It is review number 186 on the relevant Wiki page. She hated it and didn't finish it, but what she wrote was so funny. Maybe you could have a go at that, or saying what you've said. Or let your inner Alanis out. Indeed, jump back in whenever you're ready.

Yes, I'm going to try NaNo again. I've already been mulling an idea around in my head but it's pretty simplistic right now and it needs a lot of planning. So, the 2nd year is the hardest? You definitely have to be my NaNo buddy again!

Yes, I read Sunshine about a month ago (we seem to read the same things nearly at the same time, have you noticed that?). I really want to like it better. The beginning was fine but it falls apart at the end. It disappointed me. Yes, I noticed yesterday as I was reading through your reviews that we have Fevre Dream in common. I enjoyed it. So much wonderful imagery in it and an original idea, to boot. So many vampire stories are just more of the same. I also find it funny that it's GRRM. My husband just LOVES his fantasy series, but I can't get into it. I just finished reading a couple of vampire books. Two are by Tristram Kith, a duology called Trouble In the Forest. Unfortunately the books are uncommon, I think they were self-published or a small print run. Don't look for them on BookMooch or in your library. I had to order them. But basically, it's Robin Hood as vampire. I enjoyed it. Then I read the Charlie Huston books Already Dead, No Dominion and Half the Blood of Brooklyn. Those were a hard-boiled, NY gang/mafia take on vampires. Interesting. Too much language for me to really embrace it as a favorite. Next vampire book will be #1 in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series (I think by JR Ward). Have you read the Darkangel triology by Meredith Ann Pierce?
I'm also reading Japanese fiction on the side. Right now it's Spring Snow. Next will be Naoko and then After Dark (I can't remember the authors, sorry).
So, drop me a line if you have any suggestions. Let me know how you are. Are you doing NaNo '08? Got any ideas yet?

I am enjoying War & Peace so far. Its not as weighty (content wise that is) as I thought it would be. I just wish that I had more time to devote to it.
One last thing before I go...I just finished an ARC that was sent to me by Harper Collins, called Alive and Well in Prague, New York by Daphne Grab. Its a contemporary young adult book about a girl struggling to deal with her dad's diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease and also moving to a small town from New York City. I thought it was an amazing read and couldn't put it down. Pretty much read it in one sitting this morning on the commute in...then sneak read in my cube until I hit the last page. If its something that you might enjoy let me know and I'll send it along to you.

I also know what you mean about changes made from UK to US. I don't like it either...so when I know that a british author that I like is coming out with a new book I'll try to get it from Amazon UK. For some of the less well known authors this also means that I get the books earlier since the US release date is months later. =)
I'd also love to read the book after your mom is done with it. Thanks for the offer. If there is anything that I've read recently that you would like to read as well then let me know. If I still have it I'd be happy to pass it along to you. =)

I haven't worked on my NaNo yet. Neither of my two test readers finished reading my 1st draft and I guess it discouraged me a little. My husband pointed out some plot holes - which is good. I'm letting things mascerate up in the noggin for a little bit, maybe I can fix it soon. I was thinking of doing NaNoEdMo, but decided against it. But the good thing is, I have some ideas for NaNo 2008. Are you thinking of doing it this year?

I've always love that old k's choice song since I was a kid. My mom used to hate it! which of course made me love it even more! No, I just get really lazy about updating my profile. For example, I've been lying about my age for over a month, apparently ;) which works out nicely as I'm in denial about being 28.
what have you done to me?! Now I have FF Fever!! I lent my sister my memory card so I couldn't play, so what do I do? I went on You Tube and watched someone else play... isn't that the saddest thing you've ever heard??? It is kinda cool, this guy, or gal, recorded them self playing the whole third, and I think even the second FF game. I watched parts 1-19 last night. its in like 10 minute increments. you do the math. I'm SUCH a LOSER!!!
Anyway, FF is terrifying! And I love it. But you are lucky! At least you have your hubby to hold you when you get tooo spooked!! *grin* me? all I can do is hug my pillow tight and pull the covers over my head he he he

Well, I finished Patrick Carman's Beyond the Valey of Thorns a couple days ago. It didn't hold my interest as well as The Dark Hills Divide had. I think I missed where the first book took place. Something about a library, cats, and wanting to go beyond the forbidden wall just caught my attention better I guess. At times while reading book 2, I thought of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and thought it a bit odd or silly because Alexa is only thirteen years old. I'm still going to try to get the third book and prequel to the series - can't wait to find out what happens next - but it may be a bit since I'm trying to not buy any more books this month. (Let's see if I can succeed at that, shall we? ;)
So spill the beans, what did you think of book 1 and 2 of The Land of Elyon? :)

Have you considered playing with the photo in photoshop or similar? I've done some very cool stuff with photos there. Would it still fall under copyright if we played with the image? See if anyone in the group knows.

I'm a way newbie, I hadn't heard of it before I saw it on yours. But I want to be a writer, so I figured it be a good way to flex those writing muscles. Sending you Lots and Lots of luck

NaNoWriMo!!! I hope I have time to do it this year, it was a lot of fun last year. My advice is to have a word goal per day--I think it works out to 1600 words per day, or something. My other advice is to think about your plot developments in the shower, because in my experience that's the best time to do so (no distractions). I really want to see whatever you end up with, so you have to promise to show me over winter break!!

This is my first year to try NaNo -- I heard about it last year, but not in time to get involved. I hadn't planned to do it this year (busy November for me), but my little brother issued a challenge, and you can't let that sort of thing lie! ;-) So yes, I'm going to give it a shot. I'm glad to know I'm not the only wacky HE person who will be pulling hair out over this !

I am really sorry to have to ask what is probably an
incredibly dense question, but how do I make the
connection between the word here and the html. I know
a little about using wysiwyg, but usually there is a
nice button to press that says link and you type in
your link, so I'm not sure how to say my review is
HERE and then where does the html go? If you feel
this is too annoyingly basic, you don't have to
respond!

I'm thrilled to hear that you've discovered Jim Butcher. I LOVE his books, especially the Dresden Files series. There's something about Harry's wise cracks that always gets me...
I recently picked up a book by one of your favorite authors, Jasper Fford. I think it's called Lost in a Good Book. It caught my attention at the bookstore. It looks promising.
After browsing your library, I'm assured of your good taste :) Any books you'd recommend?
Happy Reading!

You'll have to tell me what you think of Inkheart, since I've thought about reading it. :)
By the way, I found The Big Over Easy as I was going through a box of my books this weekend--sorry I lost track of it. I told my mom where it is, so you can pick it up at my house pretty much any time.
Continued good luck on your way to 75 books--you've got it in the bag. ;)

47, even better. :) Ohhh, Charles de Lint is one of my favorite authors! "Spiritwalk" is a TBR for me, I dont' own and haven't read "Moonheart," and I've read "Someplace to be Flying" two or three times. I just finished reading an advance reader's copy of CdL's "Little Girl Lost," a Newford YA novel. I was so shocked to come across it - someone had it in their BookMooch inventory, so I mooched it from them. :)

I have only one "trilogy" under my own name - Cycle of Fire, which includes Stormwarden, Keeper of the Keys, Shadowfane.
This is a classic coming of age with three young protagonists but -- two are flawed, and there's an extreme underlyng element to the world they inhabit that will, guaranteed, surprise.
The other trilogy was done in collaboration with Raymond Feist, Daughter of the Empire, Servant of the Empire, Mistress of the Empire.
sorta "woman of substance' but set in the fantasy world of Kelewan that mixes cultural concepts rather radically. It's a broadscale political intrigue, with bite, and a woman protagonist who is faced with innovating an entrenched set of traditions in desperation - changing the culture to save her family.
These two are standalones:
Sorcerer's Legacy - short, fast, my first novel, court intrigue with a dash of romance, with a twist.
Master of Whitestorm - he's a mercenary, hired out to handle impossible jobs - reads like a sequence of bizarre adventures -- roughly, if you Liked the movie Lethal Weapon, but this character's paranoia will be revealed to the depths as the stories progress.
Which leaves the Big Series, The Wars of Light and Shadow -
This batch has all the depth in the whole world, and then some. It will begin with some apparently classic elements, but nothing at all is as it seems.
It has the same sort of "build" as Hell's Chasm - the whammy as it cuts loose will throw your socks off - Fantasy but Not Traditional in ending, or in thrust, one bit.
If you appreciated how the detail work led up to the finale and the character depth in Hell's Chasm, then you won't be thrown. Don't expect Any Orcs, Any Elves, or any "War is Pat Solution" These books will turn you on your head, if you like reads in depth. (brief text excerpts are available on my website)
The titles in order:
Curse of the Mistwaith
Ships of Merior
Warhost of Vastmark
continued with
Alliance of Light - 5 more titles, inclusive
Fugitive Prince
Grand Conspiracy
Peril's Gate
Traitor's Knot
Stormed Fortress (coming Nov 5 07)
