Om mig A fourth year university student majoring in History and International/Cultural studies (ICS). I have a passion for all things Roman, Greek, Byzantine, Persian or just plain old.

Om mitt bibliotek I am continuing to build my library, even though I live in NYC and space, time and money are always at a premium. I'm looking to pick up more books on Persian and Byzantine history and to begin studying at least one "dead" language.

Scratch again. I hope you didn't mistake my use of the tag "classics" to mean the works of the ancients. I use it as a catchall for all the Dickenses and Twains and their ilk -- books we all read eventually either because we have to or because we want to be "well read."

Thanks for marking my library as interesting. I'm looking for where our interests intersect, though--perhaps with your "light" reading. Classics are distinctly not my focus! By the by, depending on which end of the 20-somethings you're at, I'm probably old enough to be your mother. I worked at the Strand long before air conditioning and the coffee bar.

Speaking of light reading, have you read Donna Tartt's The Secret History? It's about a group of classics scholars at a fictionalized but clearly recognizable Bennington College (Tartt's alma mater). Probably a good subway book for you.

I'm Greg from the Advertising Creeps group. What sort of analysis will you be doing? I've never worked on pharma, but I have worked on healthcare. One of my first assignments was writing a brochure called "Adult Incontinence: What it is and how to manage it."

oh, well if you want something more like a textbook sure, there a re a few options out there. i have one that is from foundation to fall, but the section for the republic is pretty good...though, in all likelihood not as good as the one youve got there. tell me how that one shpaes up, it looks like it would be good...

at first reckoning, i think the chronicle of the roman republic is a good book. it's not overly academic, though it is pretty sound on historical information. but the history is done as somewhat episodic vignettes of important figures. of course, with roman history, much is focused on the various personalities. anyway i found it was a good place to start. and what is cool is that, at least as i recall, when yo uread a section it makes for a good starting point for primary sources, which, can at times be dry and heavy when you read on your own. the book is brisk but thorough, so you have a good look at a lot of history in about 2-3 hours reading. sorry, ive been writing this between people at my desk here at work. i hope it makes sense and ill keep looking at other books i have.

Definitely worth the price!! I mean, I suppose if I were an archaeologist it would be more useful, but I love to simply browse through it. Though it is indeed a large book. Anyway, back in my Barnes & Noble days I special ordered it. As an employee the 30% discount helped. You might be able to find a used copy somewhere. As for B&N, I heard they stopped doing special orders, but Borders still does as far as I know.

I have a few more Byzantine and Ottoman titles that are yet to be catalouged (watch this space). Found 'Byzantium and the Crusades' to be one of the best analyses of the period - well worth a read. It has just made it to softcover in the bookstores recently.

We have a bookfair coming up near where I live (Canberra Australia) - I'll see what turns up there.
