Om mig I've just finished the history/archives program at Simmons College in Boston. I work as an Assistant Reference Librarian in the library of the Massachusetts Historical Society. I'm also LT's Bibliothecarius Mortui, so if you have any questions about the Legacy Libraries, please feel free to ask.

Major interests: history of the book in early America, colonial and early national college libraries, literary curiosities and biblio-hoaxes.

Om mitt bibliotek Mainly history, biography, books on books and natural history - but with some fiction (mainly historical fiction and bibliomysteries) and other things thrown in as well. I also collect rarer items.

I can now truthfully say that a (bare) majority of my books are in the same place I am, occupying a spare room in my apartment.

Check out my Read in 2007 tag to see (some of) what I read last year, or Read in 2008 for this year's books.

Firefox 2.0 Haven't upgraded to 3.0 yet because I've heard some grumbling...
Thanks, Jeremy. I did print it as you suggest. I just thought it might be an inherent bug that should be addressed.
I've tried printing the cataloging guide for Legacy Libraries, and while the second page comes out OK, I get nothing on the first page but the LT header. I've tried using the printer-friendly version as well as printing directly from the original page with the same result. Any ideas?
Jeremy,

Dave and I would like to declare the Charles Lamb Library "complete."

We've completed all our library lists and other research sources. I may replace a few covers but that's about it, except for random inputs from Charles Lamb lovers.

best,
Jerry & Dave
Thanks for the very nice review of The Whiskey Rebels. I appreciate your kind words.

Best,

David
Hi there,

I would be interested in working on a legacy library...let me know what I have to do...

Regards,

Peta
I left this message for thf4 as well. If either of you can give me the access information for Faulkner's legacy library, I'll be happy to add the data referred to below:
"I just obtained a copy of Life magazine's July 20, 1962 edition, which contains William Styron's "obituary" piece on William Faulkner. In it, Styron relates walking through Rowan Oak on the day of the funeral with Shelby Foote, who was looking for a particular anthology of poetry that he knew contained Faulkner's own poem, "My Epitaph". In the process, Styron noted the titles of a baker's dozen of books on Faulkner's shelves, most of which I do not see listed either in the UVA catalog, or the LT catalog for Faulkner so far. (The article also mentions that Styron was pleased to see his own novels in Faulkner's collection, but it doesn't mention which ones.) I would be happy to enter these titles into the TempWmFExperiment library, if I knew how to go about it."

Jeremy,

In the June 2008 Bookplate Society Newsletter, there is a paragraph on the The Historic Libraries Forum, a forum for people "working in or interested in historic libraries of all kinds." I thought you might want to check out their website, and maybe introduce yourself and LT's Legacy Libraries to them if you think they'd be helpful to us. The forum appears to be a good resource. I particularly like the list of UK online catalogues on their Links page.

best,
Jerry
Hello,

I'm interested in working on Jane Austen's library, and the WikiThing page says to contact you for more information about her book catalog.

Thanks!
Thank you for the info. Back in 2002 S.T. Joshi put out a book cataloging about a thousand or so of the books in Lovecraft's personal library. It's a pretty interesting book. I'll start with a 'request for permission' note to him, maybe? Yay.
Interested in helping with the Lovecraft, R.E. Howard or E.R. Burroughs catalogs. tnx.
Hi there,

I read your post about legacy libraries and I was sad to see that the work on Herman Melville's library has gone quiet. I'd love to help out with this work. Let me know what I can do. Thanks!
JBD:

Yep. Still interested in getting Dee's library started. Thanks!
Okay, I surrender! It's just going to have to be frustrating, I guess. And I still do volunteer for a project. I also recommend the John Soanes library in London (he was the architect for the House of Parliament). Plus, I'd love to know what's in Isaac Asimov's library!
So check out Carl Sandburg for:

a tree grows in brooklyn by betty smith

Of Mice & Men {1st PRINTING} (1955 ORIGINAL PRINT CLASSIC) (#A1329) by John Steinbeck

These were two matches from my library, and I know that Betty Smith's classic is initial capped! I'm also reasonably sure that there is no ampersand in any printings, including the play versions, of Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck.

There are plenty of just initial caps (as in only the first word of a title is capped), and I understand it entirely for non-English languages and for early printings of works. It's just annoying when the writer published in the last 200 years or so (except, of course, for e.e. cummings).

But, as I say, quibbles. With enough time....

Anyway, thanks for listening.

I am fascinated by the Legacy Libraries (and, in fact, saw a formidable one at the Soanes House in London two weeks ago). It's great fun to compare my reading to others, especially in the Legacy Libraries. I, too, would be interested in working on one, but it would have to be from a catalog or other readable source.

Realizing that all the people keying in the libraries are volunteers, I just have one teensy quibble with the library entries. Could there be uniformity about the basics of book titles? Some people are entering as ALL CAPS, some all lowercase, some mixed, some Inital capping only the first word in the title. There are misspellings which are obviously typos. It's especially frustrating as I try to make sure my personal entries are uniform and correct so that someone else can find a book if it interested them when perusing my library.

That's it--my only quibble. I LOVE the feature.

Thanks.
Hi - I would be interested in working on a legacy library.

Adele
Hi,

I would be interested in helping with the Yeats library. For two year, I was the late Richard Finneran's editorial assistant. Finneran was the editor of The Collected Poems of W.B. Yeats.
