Om migI'm 56, husband (20 years of marriage), father of one 14 year old daughter. I work at the University of Texas Harry Ransom Center, an archive of rare books (1.1 billion dollars worth!! which includes a Gutenberg Bible) . I also am a painter. We live in the country about 25 miles east of Austin, TX USA. We raise chickens, goats and garden. I am a Catholic convert. I love to read and have been in the same Men's book group for over 20 years.

Om mitt bibliotekI have a bunch of art books. A bunch of fiction and a lot of books about Christianity and slowly adding more books about Catholicism. A smattering of history, philosophy and non-fiction. I am drawn to books that speak to our unique spiritual condition as human beings. My guilty pleasure is crime fiction. I check a lot of books out of the library so some of these listed I don't actually own but have read.

My favorite Christian fiction novel is The Robe by Lloyd Douglas. I read it evey year during Lent. I think it's one of the best books ever written. In terms of Catholic fiction I would highly recommend Bud MacFarlane's three books: Pierced by a Sword, Conceived Without Sin and House of Gold. You can order them at www.catholicity.com. After I read the first one I ordered a dozen copies of it to give away to my friends, I liked it that much. Also, the two books Ann Rice has written since she came back to the Church are good, and very well written. (I find a lot of Christian fiction is poorly written. Those Left Behind books were the worst.) Rice's books are Christ the Lord, Out of Egypt and Christ the Lord, the Road to Cana. I have never read her previous stuff - not in to vampires - and was impressed with the quality of her writing, as well as the obvious great amount of research she had done to make her novels realistic.

Another LTer - caitemaire - left a lot of recommendations on my page you can browse through. So far on her recommendation I've read This House of Brede, and I loved it. I work for a young Order of Sisters and I've always been curious as to what goes on inside the convent. The way the book described convent life ties out pretty well with what I've observed of my Sisters.

Enjoy! If you read any of these, let me know how you like them!
