Om mig I am an obsessive bibliophile, and my tastes are varied and eclectic. I've been addicted to reading since I was 3 years old...so almost 30 years now, and my reading habits tend to be cyclical. When I'm in a reading frenzy, I'll read 15+ books per month, but unfortunately these frenzies are often followed by dry spells that could last months, or even years at a time. Hopefully I can work to even out these cycles.

I most enjoy reading contemporary fiction and memoirs, but I'll give anything a try if it seems interesting. I add classics and history into the mix as much as possible, because they're "good for me." :)

Om mitt bibliotek My library is divided into 3 main sections: Read, To Read, and Currently Reading. My "To Read" section is updated, but my "Read" section is mostly limited to the books I still own, and I've included a few of my childhood favorites as well. I'm now better at keeping track of my reading adventures, so the recent months are accurate.

The newest additions have short reviews and ratings included, and I hope to continue this practice, as it helps me remember the stories and characters a bit better. I do not plan to review/rate books from the past unless I read them again, refreshing my memory of them.

My Rating System
5 Stars: Love, love, love it. Must buy it now.
4 1/2 Stars: Pretty darn close to 5 stars, but not quite.
4 Stars: Enjoyed it. Would like to read more by the author.
3 1/2 Stars: Pretty good. Sometimes used for great lit that I didn't love.
3 Stars: Didn't love it or hate it. Might consider reading more by the author.
2 1/2 Stars: Crappy, with one or two redeeming qualities.
2 Stars: Dislike the book. Probably won't read more.
1 Star: Hate it. Struggled to finish. (haven't used this before)

The "On Deck" section is made up of books that I've checked out from the library, and as such, are next on my reading list.

I include several literary awards as tags: ABA, Booker, NatBookAwd, Newbery, Orange, PEN/Faulkner, Pulitzer. I use the award tags for the winners as well as the finalists. I also include several lists in my tags: 1001, Ballantine, Book Club Faves, Book Lust, Oprah, NatGeo, Parker, Today Show - these come from books about books, reading lists, and clubs.

The books I own are indicated by the "Own It" tag. I am not a book collector, and I no longer buy books, because I've been reading them so darn quickly...it ends up being a huge expense. I am addicted to the library though, but at least it's free! :)

I'm always open to suggestions and recommendations, so keep them coming!

Hi, Katie! First of all,you have awesome library! I've added you to my interesting libraries. We seem to share a lot of the same books. I wish I could read at your pace. I probably read at a third of your speed.
I also admire your profile page, especially your library comments. I noticed that others have asked these questions but how do you change font & colors, add pix to this area? You've inspired me, take care!

Go Komets! I went to Kearny, waaaaay back in the 80's... I'll start the credential/MA program through Azusa Pacific in September, so this week I'm franticly trying to pull all my final portfolio stuff together and finally become a college grad... then start signing up for substitute gigs, unless the budget cuts those all out too! We'll see what happens... As for retail sales, tell Hubby to only do it if absolutely neccesary, I still have nightmares!

Yes, you're right. We always go to Greece for our holidays and the Greeks absolutely adored Leah as everyone else there is so dark. From the moment she hit the appropriate age she could have 'pulled' a million times over!

My daughter (Leah) is now 28 and quite happy with her hair these days but she does like to have a change every now and then (as I did at her age, too). The trouble with that is that, because her natural colour is so distinctive, everyone thinks it must be because she hates being 'ginger'. I have a (lovely) aunt who, every time Leah talks about going blonde again (which she does from time to time) says 'Oh, you'll look just like everyone else. It's such a shame!' I try to explain that she doesn't have some terrible loathing for her hair, she just likes to mix things up a bit but it falls on deaf ears.
My son's hair (Ben, 31) is the same colour too (though he keeps it so short you can hardly tell) and I have always loved it so on both of them that I have an embarrassing habit of going up to complete strangers just to tell them how I love their hair - much as I have just done with you. They both tell me off for it so I hope you didn't mind. I'm just jealous.

Hi Katie - Just came over here to read that Zimbardo review you mention on Most Disturbing Books and I just fell headfirst into your library! I'm delighted to see we have so many books in common. What is more, you have actually taken the trouble to review a lot of books that are on my 'maybe once I know a bit more about them' list (Water for Elephants springs to mind - I'd never heard of it before everyone started discussing it in LT and have dearly wanted to know what it is about - sounds good too) so that was a real bonus for me. I'll be dipping in and out of your library pretty often, I think. I am waiting for my first Early Review copy to arrive at the moment which I hope will get me started on some serious reviewing myself, though I haven't got round to doing any at all yet. Now I've experienced what a huge help yours was to me I really must try harder. Thanks so much.
PS - My daughter would kill me if she knew I was saying this but, what gorgeous hair you have! Hers is the same colour and she is thoroughly sick of being told it's beautiful but I just couldn't resist!

If you enjoyed Siddhartha by Hesse, you should read Steppenwolf. those are my two favorites by him.

I will check it out, it looks good. I came across Black and Sober when I was helping a friend move. She moved to the UK, and had to leave some of her books behind, but really didn't want to, so she left them with me, where they'll stay and be loved. ( ;) ) I've not dealt with addiction personally either, but i have a few friends who have. I think everyone should read it. It really helped me ( i think) to understand addiction as much as a non-addictive person can.

Hey, if you're paying for LT (or even if it were free) you should be able to use it for whatever purpose suits your needs the best, and &%#$ the purists. Correct?

I never pay full price. A large percentage of my books come from library books sales, so they are about $1-$2 a piece. I prefer to own books, but I'd say about 1/3 of what I read comes from the library, so I don't get to rate/review it on LT, which bothers me. I should probably just enter them and tag them as borrowed. I wish Tim would add that lists feature, so I wouldn't get what I own mixed up with everything else. I also need to learn to tag what I loan to friends. I've spent hours looking for books I know I own, and found out later my sister or my mother had them!

Hi. Yeah, you're my best "weighted" match. My favorite first-time reads of 2007 are on my profile. My #1 book for 07 was The Thirteenth Tale. I haven't gotten many books finished so far this year, but I enjoyed Him, Her, Him Again, the End of Him as a very funny book. The Early Review book Olive Kitteridge I would recommend if you're in the mood for short stories. Check out Trust by Cynthia Ozick. I posted a review for it. What have you read recently?

Thanks for the comment! I marked your library as "interesting" because (although you can't really tell from the very few books I have entered), our tastes seem to line up nicely. Thus, your reviews are extremely helpful to me in deciding which books to read or avoid. Keep up the good work -- it's very much appreciated!

Somehow no one really introduced me to the magic of classics until college, so I have a lot of catching up to do! That's why my "to read" list is so hefty. :) Plus, I have had one of those dry spells you mentioned throughout almost all of college -- just no time to read for fun!!

How did you end up in the computer tech industry after your bio/psych background? Is it still related, or did you head off in a totally different direction? Who knows, I might end up doing something like that too... so many options... sigh...

Wow, we do share a lot of the same books. I'm using LT as a way to keep track of the books I've read over the years. As I finish reading a book I catalog and rate it with a very brief synopsis. Also, as I have time, I try to remember what I've read in the past and add those ones also. I can usually remember briefly what the book was about it, but unless I loved it or hated it, I don't usually remember what I thought of it - -thus, many of my books are unrated.

You asked how we held up during the fires. Fortunately, we were not affected by the fires, except for the smell and the ash, as everyone around the county was. We live in the Del Cerro area, which is on the other side of Highway 8 from SDSU. What about you? Everything OK, I hope.

Yes this is definately my new addiction too, my brother is a librarian in New York and sent this to me. The hard part is remebering all the books I've read. I'm trying to post a picture of myself at the moment so you can see we look similar, how did you enter what you are reading now? I'm reading Vernon God Little at the moment, kinda written in the style of The Catcher in the Rye, so far so good, I'm enjoying the writing of it, think you'll like that
