Thanks for you clarification of non commercial use of photos.

Happy book reading!
Hi, I had a question. You flagged a photo I found on flickr because the copyright notice said "'noncomercial', and LT is comercial." But the symbol for this is a crossed-out dollar sign $. Doesn't this mean that comercial is making money or a profit on the photo use? Is LibraryThing making money from the photo that I uploaded?

Thanks,

Jonathan
"In that instance the fact that the particular edition of the book to which he referred is actually part of a publishers series of "Classic British Literature" -- a perfectly legitimate series, and a perfectly legitimate inclusion of that book in that series."

Actually, if you read how Tim describes a series, "Classic British Literature" is not a "perfectly legitimate series". He specifically excludes publishers series from the definition. He says, "Also avoid publisher series, unless the publisher has a true monopoly over the "works" in question. So, the Dummies guides are a series of works. But the Loeb Classical Library is a series of editions, not of works."

I exchanged comments with the programmer of that template, and he agreed with me on all but one point. (The point of disagreement concerned how volumes in a series are numbered in the "Series" field.)

The series in question were "World Perspectives" and "City Lights Pocket Poets". Both embrace volumes by different authors; and some in the first might exist as editions outside the series (even those in the series having the same publisher are at times of different sizes from one another). Otherwise, distinguishing by editions hasn't been done, though I hope soon it is. Ideally, one should be able by search find all instances of a particular book, regardless edition. And, able to find only the volumes within a given series (however one otherwise classifies them).

There are other problems with classifying every edition as "the same," as that isn't always the case, and there are other reasons to distinguish by edition. In the first instance, there are many different forms of (as example) Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: some have all the original illustrations; some have only some of the original illustrations; some have no illustrations; and some have modern illustrations instead of the originals.

There can also be significant differences in front and back matter which can be sufficiently significant to be noteworthy (I've always included introductions, forwords, prefaces, though not [yet] appendices). "The Oxford Mark Twain," as example, has 29 volumes, each of which has (1) the series editor's Foreword, (2) an Introduction specific to the particular volume written by a famous writer or a Twain scholar of note (the Introduction to Huckleberry Finn is by Toni Morrison; Kurt Vonnegut wrote an Introduction for another; and Hal Holbrook, famous for his one-man Twain performance, wrote that for the 29th volume, Speeches), and an Appendix. And if the volume has illustrations, there is a back-essay about those. (Once my entire library is online, I'll consider going back and including Appendicies, at least where they are of immediate importance.)

As for the volumes themselves, in particular Huckleberry Finn, and in addition to the issue of illustrations, the text is not always "the same" volume-to-volume. Within the last ten years or so, the long-lost, and assumed permanently-lost, half of Twain's final MS was found in a trunk in an attic in California. (It was rejoined with the other half, which is in Buffalo, NY.) That MS has textual content that was deleted immediately before publication of that which is known as the official "first" edition, which makes it a different edition (on several grounds). Yet there is no way to distinguish it, except by disambiguation notice -- but that notice attaches to all editions/copies of Huckleberry Finn.

I've been experimenting in effort to find a way to distinguish by edition, at least within my catalog, but at present it isn't possible to do so, in part because there are those who insist that which is not a series -- "Tom Sawyer" -- is a series simply because the several volumes inserted into it happen to have a few of the same characters.
Just to be clear:

1. My consistent standard is Turabian.

2. I stick strictly to the information provided in the actual book. I don't add any "missing" information, or omit relevant information which is included.

3. When dealing with elements of an existing entry I'm using by default -- title/subtitle, ISBN, etc. -- I ensure that they conform to those in the actual book. (Amazon is riddled with errors, which I correct whenever I've time*. And I only do that directly from the book; if I haven't the book, I make no changes.)

3. As a published writer -- an author -- and victim of copyright interference/infringement -- I have a thorough understanding of copyright law. In addition, I'm a legal professional.
_____

*There is an entry for a Denise Levertov volume on LT which is identical to that on Amazon. The "title" consists of three volumes by her, which are included in a 3-in-1 -- which has an actual title, but is not that given. (I suspect it was entered that way by a seller who wanted to hype the book, or didn't know better.) Whenever I come across that "title" on Amazon, I've insufficient time to correct it; and whenever I come across it on LT, I wish I could correct it.

(In some such instances I've posted comments to the cataloger requesting corrections be made, but haven't seen or heard a thing in response, in any instance.)
I thank you for your rational review of House on First Street. I checked it out from work last week. As a former New Orleanian, I was quite disgusted by it, despite some good writing. I've been steering customers towards Gumbo Tales instead, which is another post-Katrina book by a ex-NOian, that I've just started. It points out the ridiculousness of the restaurant culture down there, pre- and post-Katrina without being insulting.
The thing that really bothers me, is that a New York Times reviewer recommended it, while having the same qualms that you do in your review.
Sorry to ramble. It just feels good not to be the lone dissenting voice...
Lilithcat,

I had a question about your quarentine critera because you quarentined my photo of Flannery O'conner & Walker Percy. I took an original photo of an open book & several of my books together. The books had a photo of the author. But it is an original photograph, only one photo of its kind. I do not see it as any different than posting the thousands of book covers we see on LibraryThing. Are not all the bookcovers copyrighted? What if I post a bookcover for the author's photo, will you quarentine that?

Sincerely, Jonathan

KingRat flagged for this reason: nice try. it's still a derivative work of a copyrighted work, which means you need permission.

Thanks for bringing the Ethel Smyth issue to my attention. Something went wrong when I pasted the link in, but it's fixed now.

Yes, am enjoying the Norwich tremendously, as his writing is, as you know, quite engaging. But I need to keep flipping to the family trees to "keep score" as there's an enormous cast of characters and the names are usually quite similar. Not as bad as Russian novels, though ;-) Byzantium isn't exactly my era - my undergrad degree was in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology, and I concentrated on ancient Egypt.

Twoey the Bad Cat has gotten by on his cuteness for lo these eight years. The vet gushes over him and laments that he can't be bred (his fur is particularly bright red-gold, although you can't tell it from this photo). Then there are the vet techs who argue about whose turn it is to deal with him.
Just saw you posted "Dog and Duck" by Arthur Machen in the food title group. I've recently become a fan but am not familiar with this one - would you give me a quick synopsis, please?

thanks -

It looks like you've already removed the images. Thanks,
Debra
Thanks for setting me straight regarding images. I'll remove them right away!

Thanks, I changed it. My hope is "have camera will travel". I was so impressed by the goodwill store. The staff is great! How does one title pictures? I like to see a short explanation below a shot.
Wow. What a fast, accurate response. You're smart.
Lilithcat-

Thank you for looking up the other bookshop. I made it to Top Shelf in Palatine today. They were closing so I will have to go back soon when I have more time to browse.

It's very difficult to read Franco Fortini also for a italian speaking language. It's possible there are some translation in English language, I don't know.
Also my library is a work in progress!
I write you from Genova, Italy do you know?
Bye or CIAO!
Hi Lillithcat, I fixed the link regarding the funny video for authors. Find it below. :)

Enjoy!
Thanks for the help Lilithcat! It is OK for me. I am only thinking about / looking for parts of « Common Knowledge » which is only available at « hidden » pages of the different variant names ... (discrepancy about common knowledge that should be inherited ...)
P.S. I am surprized about the « dominant » name variant selected by LT. (All works are now at Author: S.Y. Abramovitsh.) However this was / is out of my control.
Dear Lilithcat, I combined Author: S.Y. Abramovitsh to Author: Mendele Mokher-Sforim together with some other name variants (see Common Knowledge: Sforim, Mendele Mocher. I added the link to Jewish Encyclopedia but I did not add the Author picture: S.Y. Abramovitsh credit: from Wikipedia, copyright: Public domain, copyright expired per Wikipedia. I did not upload pictures so far. Can you please assist me? Greatings from Munich, Germany
regards gangleri
I prefer to think of it as"great minds...." however presumptuous that may seem.
See you in the combining helpers log.

RE: Army poster?

Thanks, I'll do that: but since the image is unequivocally PD, is any credit at all really necessary? For instance, I've never credited the National Archives and Records Administration on any of the public domain USHMM photos I've uploaded.

P.S. What does "Clear" copyright mean?
Dear Lilithcat,
I am new to LT just joined yesterday and paid dues. I read your posts on the Etiquette forum talk and you made some posts along with others in Feb about combining and problems with amazon etc. You also made some very insightful comments about language and how to approach communicating with people online which I really appreciated being a language teacher ( French). You seemed pretty understanding and interested in the topic so I was hoping maybe you could explain to me what that was all about? I ask because I have a lot of French books and some books in English with no ISBNS and when I started adding books last night sometimes when I typed in the ISBN I could find the book in both Amazon and Library of Congress- I always check LC first but then sometimes could only find it via aazon or amazon.fr - I also noticed what seemed to be errors or confusion either on my part about what cataloguers had entered for some books on every single one of those sites. For example even on LC for one of my French art books the author listed was actually the editor and in French you have publishing and printing series and editor's series that all follow different names and there is no field provided for that in English since it doesn't seem to really correspond. How the books are really known by what seris or grouping is done a little differently over there as well for art books so it doesn't quite translate. It has been done inconsistently across LC amazon and amazon.fr and some university sites. I am not quite sure how to correct it in the data I imported via LT when adding the book? and what is considered bad data that we new users should be aware of to that it doesn't cause problems for others? I really appreciate your help and response back. My email is

Thanks for the note about Creative Commons- the pictures are staff photos (mine) of my library- so how do I get them to "stick"? And the logo is the school logo to identify the venue- so who has to give permission for that?
I'm the librarian.
Thanks for your reply, lilithcat. I'll take your advice, and research any picture I find before I post it. If you see me making any mistakes, please give me a heads up so I can learn how to do this right. I'm having so much fun learning new computer skills in working with this site. I must have been a librarian in a previous life! :)
Lilith--just in case you're unaware I fixed the flesh eating zombie thread in the Pro and Con group.
Hi lilithcat! Noticed you've been adding some Chicago bookstores to Local, and I've heard you mention the Seminary Co-op before, so wanted some advice. I'm FINALLY moving to Chicago, at the end of this week (it only took a year for everything to finally work itself out...), and I am positively in love with the Seminary Co-op (and 57th Street Books), but I'm going to be living on the north side. Would you recommend any of the places you've added in/near Edgewater? I'm sure I'll still do plenty of traveling to Hyde Park, but I'd be happier if I knew there were good bookstores close to me too. Thanks!
Looks good with a picture (http://www.librarything.com/venue/5). My brother lives about two blocks from this library.
Ah! Now I know which book I have it in. Thanks!
It's been a bad day on the forums. I hope the weekend goes better for you. By the way, I really like your profile picture. Who's the artist? I seem to vaguely remember it but I thought I'd take the lazy way out and ask you instead of madly flipping through my art ed books...
Just testing.
I just wanted to say that I just read your review for Rose's 1 Dead in Attic, and the end of it made me smile in an odd way. I've been looking for the words to recommend that book, and then more recently The Translator by Daoud Hari. I just wanted to say that your three word phrase at the end was the perfect mix of comment and command for both of these books. Take care.
Thanks so much for the note regarding the Pfaff M.R. James bio cover art! I was just searching for an image of this cover online last week and couldn't come up with a thing, so this is very timely. I very much appreciate your uploading an image.

Kind regards,
Marie-Thérèse
Well, I have been told by a few people to read the first book in the trilogy, so I am definitely going to do that. And then if I don't like it, to be honest, I'll still probably even give the second and third books a try - for some reason, if the first book doesn't sit right with me, the second and third books actually DO. Strange, 'eh?

I always did love a good set of fantasy books, and quite frankly, the reason I picked up the boxed set in the store was for the fact the set was entitled "His Dark Materials," so I figured it was about something dark and mysterious, so I'm guessing I will end up liking them a lot. :)
Hello there, Joan!

Thank you for your input on "The Golden Compass"!

Based on what you have said, I do believe you are correct, that the best I can do is read the books for myself and then decide or not how I feel about them.

And you recommend all three books, you'd say?
Was going to send you an invite to join us in Detectives - but you are already so 'joined' I'll just say please drop in occasionally and deposit a comment or two! (And if you've any interest in Shakespeare there's another group would welcome your input).

Dear Lilithcat,
I am so sorry. I wanted to look at your reviews so I came to your profile and my mouse clicked on something that now says "invitation sent." I don't know what it is I am inviting you for, or to do, but I didn't mean to click. So if you're wondering who I am and why I am inviting you to whatever, all I can say is that I am a Librarythinger with a loose mouse!
What speedhaven said. ;) Thanks for letting me know. I realised after I uploaded those that I probably wasn't doing it right, so I stopped. I'll go see if I can remove them, if they're not already gone. Bummer.
I've now added a little more about 'Slightly Foxed' and hope to add more through the next week or two.
Thank you for leaving a note about your confusion.

Thank you for posting the book sale of next weekend.

I finally made it Powell's bookstore. Do I need to say I love it?

Thank you for letting me know about the pictures. I thought that if they were on the web that they were public domain. I will remove what I've added.
Hi Joan -- thanks for the feedback on the bookcases! Sounds encouraging. We're definitely going to have room to grow; our new place is a South Loop loft in an old building, and we've got a reaaaaally big wall to fill with cases. We'll be sorry to leave HP, in a lot of ways, but we both still work down here, and have lots of friends in the neighborhood, so it's not as big a departure as it might be.... Cheers -- Patchen
Hi! I just saw in a Talk discussion that you had 57th Street Bookcases build your built-ins. I'm just starting to work with them to design some for my new place. Everything I hear has been positive, so I'm not looking for an endorsement as much as any thoughts you might have about what you'd do differently if you knew then what you know now!

(And, actually, I do have one specific question. Are your shelves around 35" wide? Are they fixed or adjustable? And have you had any problems at all with the shelves sagging when fully loaded?)

Thanks - Patchen
RE : Dorothy L Sayers

I`ve just added posted some DLS-related info that might interest you - Message # 16 under `Tell Me What You`re Collecting` in the Book Collectors group.

Hi,

I hope you don't mind, but I copied your "seven swans" and "spam" haiku from the Pirate Haiku blog comments to the Wiki.

In the "spam" haiku, I wasn't sure if the (?) was intended to be part of the poem. I took the liberty of removing it, but could easily re-insert it if you'd like. Let me know.
You are SO very funny. I really enjoy your forum posts. Thanks for brightening my day. Hope yours is going well too.
I have to agree with your sentiments about RYM. I don't know if music people are just lazier than book people, but it seems I have to do alot of track entering. Or maybe it's just my taste in music. I'm finding that most of my classical cds and records aren't on the site yet.
Thanks for the information about the author's presentation. I will consider attending.

Jim
Lilithcat_

I am still trying to figure out how I post a picture of my current reading in my profile. I went back to your instructions on my page from a few months ago and I am not understanding. Do you have time to help?

Ponder
I've long been an admirer of your library, which I found through your posts on Chicago-area bookfairs (I'm a U of C student living in Hyde Park). But what I really want to know is why you have The Noel Coward Album on cassette. (Obviously, I followed your Rate My Music link.) It's one of my most treasured vinyls; I particularly like "What's Going to Happen to the Tots?"
argh. I saw something on your profile called "rate your music." 'I wonder what that is,' I thought to myself. sigh. There goes the rest of my free time.
I'm currently reading up on M.F.K. Fisher, and I started this thread to keep track of my findings:

http://www.librarything.com/talktopic.ph...

I noticed you have quite of the few titles I covet, and you're more than welcome to comment!
Thank you :-)
No, I didn't check the original source... *blush* So thank you for being so observant :-) It is best if the original source is credited :-) I have changed it.
Many thanks for the head's up. Photo credit has been changed.
Lilith, I am trying to get a group started for my class that starts in the fall. That's Why there are so many empty shells.
Thank you so much! Hopefully it won't take long to regrow the hair I pulled out looking for it. Many of my favs are missing pics so I'm going to give it my best shot! See you around the forums!
Hello there! I once saw the 'form letter' we can send to authors when requesting permission to use a photo on their author page. I cannot seem to find it today. I've been all over the site. Can you tell me where it is kept? Thanks for the help.
Ooops!

Thank you for the warning Lilithcat. I thought it would be enough to identify the photo's link source.I had found such great photos... But copyrights first!

Lilithcat-

Would you be able to send me directions on how to upload the book cover to my profile? I see that you are asked frequently. Thank you for the help.

Ponder
Cool! Thank you so much...Robin
Hi Lilithcat...can you please point me to the directions for adding covers to my profile...I'm clueless..thanks! -Robin
Ahhh... there we go. I was using a wrong url from the works page. When I checked out your example I found the correct LT.com/i/covers/med/ url. Then I just had to delete and extra "/ I had floating around. Success!

Thanks a ton, Lilithcat!
Lilithcat,

A quick question regarding those pics you posted under currently reading. I followed the advice you had given to another thingamabrarian and it works great however, when amazon has no pic of the book on file, I've tried using other sites pics (or even LT's user pics) and always come up with a broken picture box when I save my profile using the non-amazon address.

Any suggestions/ideas? I appreciate your help! Thanks.
Hi,

Thank you for the link tip.

Lilithcat! Thanks so much for letting me know about being a Library Thing Author. I've emailed Abby and we'll see what happens. Too bad about that whole no fame and fortune thing, though :)

Between Newberry, Printer's Row and the other plethora of used books stores & sales, I am quite sure I will never truly catch up. But everything is a step in the right direction!
Thanks for the info on that language site you recommened regarding the japanse picture book. That site is quite the resource!
Hi, lilithcat.
Thanks for the info!

Hi, lilithcat.
Very nice collection!
And I understand about "work in progress." I'm still in the process of adding books to my LT library as well, and am not even half-done yet.
Anyway, I'm wondering if I may ask how you were able to post the book images under "I'm currently reading" in the About Me section, above...? Is there a particular code needed for displaying the images?
Thanks!
John
Hello, I read your review of the AIA guide to Chicago. Have you seen the Ira Bach guide to Chicago's Historic Suburbs? It's out of print, but it does have a good chapter on River Forest. I have to say I enjoyed walking around River Forest more than Oak Park.
Hey there,
I read some of your posts under 'Recommended Site Improvements' and thought you might be able to help. How do you input pre-ISBN books, especially *very* old books which only have the publisher address, no date or other info. For example, the first book I've tried to catalogue with this issue is Andersen's Fairy Tales, but all I know is that it was printed in Great Britain by Blackie and Son. I'm afraid to think how many books I have that also lack info.
Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the link help. Getting it aligned well is a hassle, the pic didn't come through from Amazon properly (probably some kind of protection by them), but I fixed it.
Lilithcat,
is your "I'm currently reading" a widget? I have a widget on my website but that one won't work when i enter it in "about me".

Litlithcat,
the pic is there again, it wasn't earlier today when I checked. Apparently it has been put back.

I'm done with the individual Books of Magic books. 'Never' away if you think it is wise. I don't feel that I have enough experience yet to touch the Never button.

We're Livejournal neighbors at that. No more booksales for me until I find a new job, alas. And the Ravenswood Manor massive garage sale is this weekend. sigh.
Ha! We appear to be cleaning up the Neil Gaiman/Books of Magic mess at the same time. I've temporary combined a few odd things such as Neil Gaiman/John Bolton Neil Gaiman in order to combine the works and then separate the authors after doing that. Perhaps I'm going at it in the round-about way since you seem to be 'nevering' the author combinations at the same rate that I'm re-separating them. I couldn't think of another way that don't have ISBN's...Sorry if I made a mess for a few minutes...
Hmm

"Reading your comment, I had what turned out to be a brilliant idea (if I do say so myself). I looked on the French wikipedia site! And, lo and behold, those two titles are listed under ""Arcadi et Boris Strougatski", so it must be a typo (or an error at the source from which someone took the info). I'm off to combine them. Thanks for giving me (however unintentionally) the idea!""

I suspect you wanted to post that to jjlong

I've no idea what combining problem you are talking about. Have fun with it anyway!
I saw that suggestion, and I wish I did know. I suppose Boris could have collaborated with another brother, or a son - after Arkady's death? - and googling the French titles didn't tell me much... so I left it, for someone with more knowledge, or more guts.

I guess we could post the question to Combiners, or to an SF group. Hmm.
RE - pictures. No I'm not Tristane - I cut a longer story shorter

I discovered that Janny Wurts had no picture, I went to her website, and left a request.

By the time I got back, the next day, permission had been granted and another forum member had registered on LT and uploaded the photo - crediting copyright as requested - but unaware of the issues involved in permissions... I'll see if I can upload a second copy with a link to the permission.
Thanks on the mouse Geronimo Stilton.
Trusted Wikipedia. :-(
Hey..

thanks for finishing up Arkady & Boris for me. Ran out of time this morning..

of course, it'll never TRULY be finished, will it?
As I've seen you've flagged an Author photo - Janny wurts is with persmission of the author. I've commented the quote below on Abby's page too.

"Hi fox -

wow, I really appreciate your taking the time to post this here - any resource that can help an author be discovered is invaluable.

Yes, you can have a picture - not all the ones shown on my website are able to be posted elsewhere, for copyright issues, but the one with the horse next to the author was taken by my husband, Don Maitz, and may be used with appropriate credit.
"
Just want to say thanks for all the help you've given me here and there (like today w/the 2 books w/same ISBN situation) since I joined LT. I really appreciate it.- ER
Oh, never mind. I see you've just linked those images there. Do you keep changing them then?

Thanks anyway!
Hi. Would you mind telling me (or linking to) how to show "currently reading" with the cover images, as in your "About Me" section?

Thanks
Hi, I noticed that you added the author disambiguation notice for A. Wainwright. I'd like to edit it, and thought it would be polite to run my suggestion past you first. Alfred Wainwright is almost always identified on his books as A. Wainwright, so when anyone adds one of his books it will pretty much always be with his name as A. Wainwright. What I'd like to propose as the disambiguation notice is:

"This author is Alfred Wainwright, almost always identified as A. Wainwright, the British author of walking guidebooks and sketchbooks of Great Britain. If the author of your book is not this person, please re-enter the full name in the author box instead of the surname and first initial only. Then your book will show up on the correct author page. Thank you for your help."

How does that sound?
Did Guillem let you read his translation or my translation of his play? My English translation is due out in print this summer. You'll have to add it to your library. And Skin in Flames opens in Chicago in February of 2008 (this month in Philadelphia, and Salt Lake City in January).
cool, thanks! :D
hi there! I'm noticing a few people with the currently reading book pictures on their profiles. Is there a feature that I'm missing, or are you just grabbing photos of books and using html to link it back to the book page? Thanks!
How did you come to know Guillem Clua's work?
RE: Willis -- Thanks for checking on that, and yeah that is mightily strange. About as weird as one of my fave actors as a child turning out to be a blue comedian. (Quite a shock to me when he showed up on stage, I'll tell ya!)
Hi I'm new to the site, this is the first I've checked someones list pretty cool.
Still feeling my way around not sure what all the benefits are just yet, I noticed you are in Chicago I love the Harold Washington Library such a cool place. Bye for now really enjoy this site. Barry
How great for you!
(I've been working on not saying something snappish and envious when I hear about other people's good fortune.. ;)
Welcome back.
Hi Lilithcat,

Hope you had a great vacation! Being away from computers is a good thing from time to time - but how fun it is to return!!

I'll let you know how the book covers go!
