Om mig I'm a witch, knitter, singer of Eastern European folk music, and avid reader, obviously. Scifi, fantasy, contemporary fiction, classics and occasional non-fiction. My user name comes from my favorite 2 books in all the world.

Om mitt bibliotek I love books with a dark side, and I'm a sucker for fairies. Patrick O'Brian was a god, "Cpt. Jack & Dr. Steve" books are among my favorites all time. Even tho I still read scifi, I adore beautifully written prose, hence my love for people like Peter Carey, T.C. Boyle, Martin Amis. I will re-read individual sentences that are striking, and love unusual word choices. Multi-dimensional characters make me drool, I want to root for your villian and get pissed at your hero.

Stringcat3 here again - was just looking at our shared books, and saw "Kavalier & Clay" at the top, so here's a little Michael Chabon gossip. Was talking to a friend in Boston this morning who said friends of his (who are pretty high on the self-absorption scale themselves) met Chabon at a dinner in Cambridge and said he was the most narcissistic creature they'd ever encountered.
Wanted to get out of the Trollope thread.

I know what you're saying about pushing through the end of the O'Brian books, but don't pass on 21. There's a great Stephen duel scene in there.

I will, for the moment, let your Yankees support pass (Go BoSox!)
Hi, lg, I stopped by for a visit because of your interesting posts on baseball. I'm afraid I root for the Yankees only every fifth day or so, when the Moose pitches. Other than that I still root (in frustration lately) for my Orioles.
I poked around in your reviews a little and really liked some. I marked yours as an interesting library so I can remember to poke around them some more--hope you don't mind.
Based on some of your comments, I think you might enjoy Gene Wolfe. We're starting a group read of his Book of the New Sun in the Group Reads - SF group. Check it out if you think you might be interested.
Most importantly, I'm continuing to send good thoughts for you and your sister. Take care, Jim
How are you? I've been avoiding tennis since Wimbledon b/c I'm tennis-depressed about Federer. Nuts, I know. I will watch the US Open though. Have you been watching?
Hi, LG! How are you? I know I was supposed to call you ages ago. I'm sorry! I just knew I couldn't do anything yet. Still broke and job hunting. I can't wait to see you again, though! It'll be great. I hope all is well. Take care and see you around the HE. :)
Just saw Murton get 2 RBI thanks to a free trial of MLB.TV!
thank you. She won't even let me hug her:(
YES, I did see that match. I couldn't take the suspense, I had to fast forward through a few parts, but I'll go back and watch the whole thing later. Right now, I'm a little heartsick for Federer :-( I know it's crazy, and I love Rafa (who completely deserved the trophy), but I'm going to have to let it sink in first. It was exhausting tv, yeah? At least we have a month or so before Olympics and then US Open.

Crazy tennis.
Hey littlegeek - checked on the chatroom for you a couple of times today. Tomorrow is 9 a.m. my time on your FAVORITE channel, NBC. I'll check in the chatroom to see if you've gotten up crack-o-dawn.

Karen
I'll be using my Dell Laptop at home, Vista, Internet Explorer. I'm at work right now, so it doesn't really count. I'm leaving for home in a bit (it's 4:53 p.m. right now here) and will try to get on later on this evening. Are you going to get up at 4 a.m. to watch?

karenmarie
He still pitches leeballs. I did not see him talking to the ball, but that does not mean he wasn't.
Hey, you would appreciate this. For Solstice we have a Midnight Sun baseball game up here, and this year Bill "Spaceman" Lee came up to pitch. He is 62 years old, and was the winning pitcher! He pitched 6 innings, had three strike outs, and gave up six runs. He was essentially pitching against college players who play in Alaska for summer work.

He still has "The Wrong Stuff."
I enjoyed your review of Kushiel's Mercy. Although I was a bit more forgiving, your criticisms were spot-on. What happened to Melisande? I hoped that she would make a triumphant, vampy return. Even Phedre has abandoned politics for matronly grief. Anyway, hi!
Truly lg, you have not come to appreciate the book. Shun shun...
Just kidding, I know where you're coming from, but I disagree.
Gotta love the First Ammendment.
Hey LG!
if u have an account on facebook then let me know and TELL ME UR ID TOO SO I CAN ADD U AS A FRIEND ON IT!!
xx peace xx
I was watching the news earlier and am keeping my fingers crossed. I hope you can stay in touch if something should happen. Remember you can call. *hugs*
Hope you're not in the fire zone, and that you and yours are OK. We've been following it up here.
You're welcome, and thank you. I'm very glad you're okay! I'll keep my fingers crossed and wish good thoughts for your friends. I hope they'll be alright!
I overheard someone say there's a fire in the Santa Cruz mountains. I hope it's not near you or and of your friends! Stay safe!
I got your blog comment, LG. Thanks! I worked hard on it. If you get a chance to comment on the kids, that would be great. "Mrs. Jonker's class" is going on tomorrow, but if you don't have time to get to those, the rest won't be going on until next week. Thanks again!

Compski
LG! Good to hear from you! Hope you are fully recovered from your recent bout of stomach flu. Did you wish for death? I know I did the last time I had that. ehgk.

Of course I'm not mad at you! It never occurred to me that you would really like Twilight. But still!!! EDWARD CULLEN!!! Doesn't your hubby smell your neck??? Or smolder at you???? Don't you guys sit in remote meadows and adore each other??? huh.

dude! we miss you. Blow off work from time to time and come chill with us! Have a great weekend, chica!

Love you!
Welcome back! I hope you're geting decent sleep.

Absolutely no worries! I'm not taking it personal, to heart, or anything like that! Everyone has different opinions of books. :)

Suge could never hate you! I gave her a link to the Twilight thread - maybe she'll actually post there. ;) (She's not been on LT much this week.) I'll pass your message on to her! :)

Yes, I expect you will have things waiting at your desk. Hopfully it's not an overwhelming amount but rather small. Hope I can catch you on LT!

Did you say you'll be in chat on Saturday for the OotP movie? I hate that I have to miss it, especially since I was late when you guys watched it that first week.

In case I'm not around this weekend, have a wonderful weekend!
Hi, LG! I'm glad you are giving 'the book' a chance. :)

Suge says she misses you, too! She wants you to know she's trying to get the first season of 'Battle for Galactica.' She can only find the second season right now. Also, she recently bought 'Firefly.'

Uglies was a really good book. You can read my review for it here.

I hope you have a good as well as safe trip. We'll miss you!
HE sees and talks to the person EVERY single day at school they praticly sit by each other every single day SORRY

sincerly, BASTIAN13
Okay. I'll hunt for Chinese food places online or see if anyone knows of specific locations.
Giants!?!

Well. When I followed baseball, I liked the Will Clark/Jose Uribe/Robbie Thompson variety. Lost interest when canned ham-head showed up.
You're library looks a little bit like my dream library, by which I mean you have a lot of the books I would shelve while working at the bookstore and think "I need to buy that" and never did.
That's great that you are so comfortable discussing it. No it was just something in chatting that seemed asking about equinox practices came out of the blue to you and so I wanted to make sure it wasn't something to personal to ask about. Did you decide where you and K are going to dinner?
LG -

I saw on the Dragon that you're thinking of getting a MacBook Air. I'd love to hear about your experiences if you do. The wife and I are shopping for a new laptop soon and it's either that or the 15" MacBook Pro. Being the tech head of the family, I'm lobbying for the Air. She's lobbying for cheap. She'll probably win...8^}

Jim (AKA drneutron)
If only! I'm so sick of all this fighting stuff that happens in the world. :(
just curious - I noticed your comment about in on Sanderson's profile page, and I am just starting to watch BSG (only in season one still) and I was interested in knowing what it was!

Thanks for the answer, now I'll have to go exploring BSG mythology!
Hello, just wanted to wish you better, and to ask a random question - what is LDS?
You're welcome. I'm sorry you had to go in to work today and am glad you're at last home again so you can get to working on recooperationg instead. It's probably difficult to not stress about next week right now, but try to just relax and concentrate on getting better. I send wishes of good luck to you for next week.

It is hard to catch up I imagine. We'll glady sum up recent events and you can start fresh on new threads instead of sorting out the other ones.

I think most of us are worried about G. From what little she's said, I'm think she may actually be better. I'm certainly hoping so. She's going through all sorts of difficult patches in life and I think some will resolve over the next week, others over the next few months.

I'll see you in the reread threads beginning with OotP. I really wish I'd been there for all of the books - I always feel terrible about that.

I sent your love to all on our weekend thread. Post #75 is a good one to read to find out about current events amongst our members.

Hope you're lying on a couch or in bed instead of still at the computer right now.

*hug for you*
Hey, LG! Long time no see. Hope you know we think about you and wish you'd come by more! I've missed you.

I saw a thread with your name on it from you-know-where. Hope you're feeling much better soon! Get lots of rest. Love from the HE.
If you care - delete if you wish...

The "Liberals Hate America" thing is simply a useful device - a "grenade" of sorts - that Doug likes to hurl when he can't find a rational point, or when he has exhausted every possible angle to get Marxism into the conversation. Note that he is not above using such tropes, while at the same time excoriating them in others. If you take a peek at his "manifesto", linked on his profile page, all will be revealed. For an avowed ex-Marxist, he loves to use all the old tricks.

He certainly has a way of taking all the air out of the room. For myself, I am finally taking the advice many others have offered me over the last few months. I am ignoring him.
Alright, you've convinced me. That first book has been calling to me from the shelf for a long time, and it just looks so scrumptious. I need some indulgence! If I enjoy it, I'll just go ahead and order the third from Amazon or something.

Cheers
Dani
I just wanted to say "thanks" for putting spoiler warnings on your reviews (Specifically, on one of the Kushiel series). I constantly have big surprises spoiled for me by inconsiderate reviewers.

Question about the Kushiel series, since you're clearly a reader of them... do you know how many books there are intended to be overall? I've had the first one on my TBR pile for a while, but I generally don't like to start a series until I already own all the books, so I don't end up having to wait to start the next book when I finish the previous. All that said, I just got my hands on the second book, and they're calling to me from that TBR shelf. Something about the series just looks so appealing...
Thank you! That was one fugly picture!
:o)
Just wanted to say your "bottom/top" comment in the iditarod thread made me laugh inappropriately loud at work. Thanks!
It seems I have an welcome ally here! Thanks for your words in the Paulos thread. (I originally wrote "unlikely ally" but figured welcome summed it up much better!) It feels good not being the only one here who calls a penny zinger a cheap shot.
Well, I guess we guessed wrong. Did you watch the whole thing?
littlegeek - I am sorry, I probably overreacted a bit. I meant that jew written with a small first letter is often used by the anti-jew fanatics. I prefer to use Jewish as a polite term. But I am beginning to wonder if any terms which divides us, one from another, is polite.

Thanks for your supportive post on GD. I enjoy seeing your comments every time.
Hi littlegeek, could you drop by the Purple is an Attitude group and give us your insight into which Oz book we should read for the next group read? We're all just saying, "I dunna know". :)
Heeeey! How are u LG?

I have half a mind to never watch PR again after that bull last week. of course, that's just me talking shit, how can you stay away, right?

how do you even begin to auf a kevin when you have a whinny ass, no talent having idiot like ricky in your show? How? Ricky has produced nothing but utter uglusity the whole season! show after show he does the same thing: whine about all the other designers, cry, roll his eyes, cry, ect. PATHETICO!! I'M SO DISGUSTED... I thought that the judges took past weeks into consideration when they voted. I cant believe ricky didn't get aufed. his dress was just sad and blah.

victoria... victoria.... I cant even remember what she did last week.

If I where Christian I would have punched that ugly little girl in her face, of course she would have kicked his ass after... how ugly was that dress? she looked like a mutant turd.
Howdy,

I just finished leaving a comment on Citygirl's profile page since I was there first. My comment related primarily to Tennis as I was reading your comments to her about various individuals in the sport. I have to say that I probably favor your players more than hers, though we're all in agreement on Serena. I respect Agassi for his skills, but nobody's held my interest much in the sport since Stefan Edberg retired; smoothest backhand and volleys, bar none! Of course, my wife liked to watch him for completely different reasons:) Becker was good too, but I always favored Edberg for his grace and I love the fact that in their three Wimbledon finals, Stefan beat Boris twice in his own "backyard."

I also hold great admiration for Patrick O'Brian's works. I re-read the first three Aubrey/Maturin books after seeing Master and Commander at the movies, and they were even better the second time around. I was going to recommend Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell to you, but I see you own it already. However, I don't see that you have Michael Chabon's latest, Gentlemen of the Road, and he's hard to beat for beautiful language.

Anyway, books or Tennis, I'm always open for comments or suggestions on either subject, if you're so inclined.

Take it easy,

bookstothesky
Hi, littlegeek. I'm glad you were able to check in and that you guys are okay! I was worried about flooding. I just got over a nasty cold myself. I hope yours doesn't last as long as mine did. Yes, I agree about the posts. I think were it that we didn't live in our time zone, I would never be able to catch up. Of course, I've been reading some threads in another group lately and let's just say I've been posting a teensy more than I normally would. ;) Sorry!

Thank you. You've always been so nice! I hope you get better soon and will tell everyone you say hi, but I hope you drop by here. Don't think I don't know what Wednesday is! I hope you have a wonderful birthday! :)
Hi, littlegeek. I don't think I saw posts on LT from you over the weekend and wanted to check on you. Some of us get real lives on the weekends, but just in case anyways, with the storm and all. How are you?
omg yes! I saw the previews and I'm dying to know who will guest judge! Christian is all like "well someone has to be eliminated" and then Tim was like "dont say that!" as only Tim Gunn can... ah I love it! Hey what's that straight guys name? mmmm he of the raven black hair?... mmmm (yummy). Well on several occasions I've felt like he should have won, but Heiddi et al always do him sooo wrong! eek! gotta go!
Ah, my heart is broken, dear lg.

Well its true, lately Elisa had been sending poo down the runway. I shall miss her tho, she didn't do as many cooky things as I thought she would after the first episode. oh well. mmmm and that Ravi gets more handsome with each friggin episode... oh me oh my!
Hi there!!

My book was just released in the market this month. I am so thrilled because Poetry is an art that is very rich. It enriches your soul as you bury mind in its path.

Please feel free to check the book out at www.poemsforkeeps.com

I will love all your feedback, but I must tell you that you will not be dissappointed. My favorite poem in the book is Shootings Shootings!!! I wrote it when Sean Taylor was shot brutally in Miami.

Warmest Regards and Happy New Year!!!

Anita
Thanks!

Interesting choices, they are new authors to me and I'm looking forward to enjoying them.
The "noir" classics might appeal to your dark side. Some
old favorites are Charles Williams, Harry Whittington, David
Goodis, Patricia Highsmith, etc. Ever read them?
Just discovered Dan Simmons. "Hyperion" (Sci-fi) is brilliant.
His Joe Kurz books (noir/mystery) are excellent.
Oh, I'm so glad you got the package in time for Christmas. You were really fun to pick out books for, and I hope you enjoy both of these. Have a great holiday!
You're very welcome. You sounded like you needed it. I'm glad your book is helping and that you're enjoying some time off to go hike. There's nothing like a great book, cool air and trees. :) I don't hike, but it's simply because I fear I'd make a fool of myself and fall. ;) My back is fine for hiking - just a flexible rod, and some titanium screws in some of my vertebrae. (Probably I wouldn't have been able to nine years ago.)
I still haven't figured out how the Davis Cup works. I've only ever starting seeing any of the matches this year b/c of the Tennis Channel.

I'll check out Carey. I'm not sure what you mean by sexually squeamish, but I don't think I'm it. (Check out my library, tag: dirty stories ;-).)
But I'm sorry Jack is gone. He was so pretty. So pretty, especially in his underwear. (Speaking of, have you seen those shirtless Roddick LaCoste ads? I know you're not a fan, but there's always aesthetics ;-) and the humor of advertising a shirt without the shirt.)

And, yes, it appears we do have zee similar tastes in zee fiction. (Sometimes I go into a French accent in my head. No reason.) Tell me about zis Jacqueline Carey, I didn't read the reviews because scared of spoilers; thanks for the alerts. And, btw, I hated The Corrections, too. I read somewhere that Styron said that Franzen was young writer most like him. I don't think so, but no one's asking me.
30 days until the Aussie Open.......

BTW, I love Project Runway. It's like Top Chef, but with clothes!
No need to be too intrigued, you've seen it before (:

http://www.cafepress.com/buy/fiction+ath...
oh, vincent was a fucking maniac!! but no one---and that includes all the wacko's i know in r.l.---is as scary as the hag from hell WENDY!!! *SCREAMS*

One day and a wake-up!! YEEPEEE!
hey lg!!!

man did i scream on wed!!!!!

during commercial, i came on your profile and typed something like "SJP!!!!! NO F'ING WAY!!!!!! U ROCK!!!!!!!", because of your prediction that she would be the secret guest judge on PR (HOW did u do it??), but thankfully i remembered the time difference, and i didn't want to spoil the surprise, nor the moment when you jumped on your couch and yelled like a maniac: "I KNEW IT!!! DIDNT I SAY THAT?? DIDN'T I SAY IT WAS GONNA BE SARAH JESSICA PARKER???" (well maybe you don't yell like a crazed person, or jump on your couch. i do. shocking, i know)

omg, Elisa: *tsk tsk* spit marks??? ah i adore her.

I felt really bad when Marion got eliminated, but hell, his design was a whole new level of butt ugly i never want to encounter again. I was mostly disappointed with the majority of the designs this week. very blah. I loved Elisa and Sweet P's capelet and mono-whasit dress, and there were some really nice pieces from other designers.... Cant wait!! Cant wait!! Is it wednesday yet?

Well, take care! "see" ya!
Hey lg, how are you??!!

ha ha ha I love, love love PR. Isn't Heiddi just gloriously beautiful? And goth, why don't these idiot contestants listen to Tim?? I mean, 99% of the time, if you don't listen to Tim's advice and critique in the work room, you get Auf'd, because he knows his shit! Oh, and I want to be Nina when I grow up!!

I'm glad that they didn't eliminate yoga girl, whom you know as Elisa (I'm really, really bad with names, so I make up my own for each cast member until I learn them. I had to open bravotv.com to write this!). Yep, she will have us rolling, cooky, quirky thing that she is. I knew it from the mo I saw her grass-staining her chiffon! chiffon!!!

Oh Chris's dress was exotic and gorgeous! and it was so well made and elegant! I did like emo guy's (Christian) suit tho. I am a sucker for pouffy skirts and that jacket was to die. when I first saw it I was like ewww but then... it kinda grew on me. the black trim if a bit iffy tho. You know, I kinda liked the pieces of Simone's design. together they were a train wreck, but separately, I would have liked the dress if it hadn't looked so homemade, and the little jacket (I have a thing for little jackets) would be perfect over this top I have.... oh well.

Hey I cant wait for biker chick sweet p to tear into some one's ass already! I can tell!! She had man arms! ha ha ha

Kevin was quick to put it out there that he is not gay! he he! you go boy! mmmm Rami is yUmmmmmY---and he has taste!

Yey! I can't wait for next Wed!!
I'm guessing "Little, Big" and "Geek Love?" I'm planning on reading "Little, Big" soon (of course "soon" when you have a stack of books doesn't mean much)...
I loved Geek Love, too. It was so twistedly wonderful.
-drsol
Totally eavesdropping on your tennis discussion; "I'm a slut for someone who can volley".

Hilarious! And hey - who isn't?

So great to read about tennis - I wish it were in the forum, so I didn't have to feel like a crazy stalker.
Wow, you remember Laver! I came into the whole tennis thing later. Navratilova was the first who interested me. I think I identified with her outsider status. She has never disappointed. And then there was Andre. I cried when he won his first Slam, Wimbledon '92. And I cried when he retired. There will never be another Andre. *sniffle* That guy. I could never get into the Pete love. I recently saw him (Pete) play in an exhibition, which was very cool, but it wasn't the same as a real match. Have you ever watched the pros play?
The Serbian is Novak Djokovic. I didn't like him at first, but he has grown on me. He's trying to join the Rafa/Roger rivalry & I think he will. Rafa blew me away when he first came on the scene. If he's not playing Roger or Roddick I usually root for him. I believe Roger will win that French one day, but I'm not sure how. Rafa has problems with injuries, and I certainly don't wish him any, but that's a weakness Roger doesn't have. His training routine is some sort of secret.

And about Roddick, don't be too hard on him. The match he played against Roger at the U.S. Open, I don't know if you saw it, but it was the best I'd ever seen him. If he had been playing anyone else he would have won the tournament. He made Roger play at his best, too. A classic match. A quarterfinal maybe? Jimmy Connors has really made a difference to his game. And I love his press conferences. He's hilarious. I agree that Blake is a huge disappointment. He chokes. I've given up on him. I don't know when we'll next see a big American player. But I've got my fingers crossed.

I love, love, love the Williams sisters. I don't let anybody talk bad about my girls! After what Serena did at this year's Australian, I think she totally redeemed herself. It was amazing. Match by match she just got better, summoning up some warrior spirits, you could see it in her roar...and then in the final she totally dismantled Sharapova in the one of the most brutal thrashings I've ever seen, Maria has not been the same ever since. I kinda feel sorry for her. She's a tiger too. Or was.

Justine, Justine. Well, I don't hate her anymore but I can't bring myself to like her either, altho she plays very prettily. Mauresmo is one of my favorite players and it was so gratifying to see her work through her demons last year to become number one and take slams, but Justine's behavior in the 2006 Aussie final left a really bad taste in my mouth. Other women worth watching? Hmmm...well, Mauresmo should be healthy again at the beginning of the year and she is just gorgeous to watch. Keep your eye on Jankovic and Ivanovic, two Serbs (I don't know what it is with that country) and I think Vaidisova (Czech) will develop into a kind of Sharapova, but with a more versatile game. She still has some growing to do. And those Russians just keep coming.... Davenport is coming back. We'll see. I don't see any real threats from American up-and-comers on the women's side, either.

As you can tell, I'm kinda a tennis fanatic. *smiles in embarrassment* So, thanks for talking tennis with me. You have no idea how happy it makes me.
I know, I know, not fair to hijack really nice picture thread. But if you ever want to talk tennis, here I be. :)
thanks actually thats pretty much what I thought. I have a wiccan online freind who sometimes refers to something pagan and I just wondered.
hi LG, I have a question and I am not looking to offend, I'm truely curious, What does being pagan mean? is it the same as wiccan?
Not yucky, but difficult to do! You should see how bad I am with eye drops. ;)
I'm glad you're okay! Yeah, I felt it. Nothing fell. Someone said it was centered seven miles north of Milpitas, which isn't far from where I live. It was one of the larger earthquakes I've experienced, though nothing like the big one in '89. That had been scary!
Hi, littlegeek. I wanted to check on you because of the earthquake. I've no idea if you felt it, but I sure did. I hope you're okay!
Thanks, my mom told me about it so I tried it out and I am already hooked.
I have been dying to read The Eyre Affair but I haven't read Jane Eyre yet. Do you think I should read that first?
Hi Karen

are you still interested in a Trollope group-read (of a stand-alone novel)? It seems I have inadvertently resurrected your thread from May... :P

regards

Laura
Thank you for the Zen moment in the thread-killing thread. :)
Thank you xx You're thoughts are hugely appreciated.
LOL. One time I thought I was writing someone a reply, and when I clicked submit, I was on my own profile! Don't feel so bad. :)
Hi littlegeek! I've missed how you've not been around as much. Are you okay?

A couple days ago, I learned that the current leader of the HE group is in her forties. I thought this might make you feel better. Cheers!
someday you'll have to come back and give me a tour of your old stompin grounds.
you're too cute!

how do you know about jacob's Pillow?!

aren't you way out west?
Thanks :-)

If you do end up reading it, I'd be interested to know if you agree, or if you wish you'd ignored me and done it sooner! I'd say you're right not to bumpit up the pile.

xx
Hi LG,

Just to let you know that my Twilight review is ready...
;-)
Baseball is boring ... ah, I mean, hi, haven’t chatted with you in quite a while. ;-)
Hi, littlegeek! Missed you. :)

Have you been in the HP Review Contest thread lately? There's a lovely reception taking place and you need to go to the stage! ;) Of course, we're singing now but that can go on hold. :)
You're welcome. I had the information on flashcards that I stuck in the books while I was reading them. If you want anything like a SpecOps list or a family tree for "Wuthering Heights," I have those, too. :)

I haven't heard of the scifi thing, either. Sometimes I have to really consider whether a book is real or made up in the series. (Ex. "Shadow the Sheep Dog". :)

It's been five years since I read any of the books mentioned that are by Shakespeare, but I'm taking a Shakespeare class next spring. As for "Wuthering Heights," I still haven't read it yet. I keep meaning to read that one!

It's my opinion that Jasper Fforde not only is very knowledgable about books, (how many books does that guy read a year, a month, a week? ;) but that he favors particular authors such as Austen and Shakespeare. I agree, there are far more authors out there (though note I am in the I Love Jane Austen group :)! It's extremely possible that, because I haven't read Trollope, Eliot, Thackeray or Fielding, that I missed them.

If I read something by Trollope, which book do you most recommend? (Sorry in advance if I've asked previously. :) I remember you told me about the Trollope group.
Hehe, that was a bit weird. :) I was never fond of Rochester in "Jane Eyre," either. What do you make of "The Eyre Affair" Rochester? Does he seem the same to you as the other, or different?

Yes, that's the thing about his books: you can read some books he makes references to that you've never read, and when you come back to Fforde's books, the things click that you missed before. :)

There are quiet a few books that appear. I've tried keeping lists, but don't have them all down. I've italicized the books that play a larger role:

#2 "Lost in a Good Book"
-> Dickens: "Great Expectations"
-> Shakespeare: "Much Ado About Nothing," "Hamlet," "MacBeth," "Henry IV," and "Merry Wives of Windsor"
-> Beatric Potter: "Tale of Flopsy Bunnies"
-> Edgar Allan Poe: "The Raven"
#3 "The Well of Lost Plots"
-> Lewis Carrol: "Alice in Wonderland"
-> Emily Bronte: "Wuthering Heights"
-> Jane Austen: "Sense and Sensibility"

-> "Bradshaw Hunts Big Game," Bradshaw Defies the Kaiser," "Bradshaw of the Congo" (any book from the Comander Bradshaw series)
-> Ernid Blyton: "Shadow the Sheep Dog"
-> Dickens: "A Christmas Carol," "David Copperfield"
-> Daphne Farquitt: "The Squire of High Potternews"
-> T.H. White: "The Sword in the Stone"
-> "Count Dracula"
-> "Sword of the Zenobians"
-> Zharkian Empire series (s.f.)
#4 "Something Rotten"
-> Shakespeare: "Hamlet"
-> Zhark series (s.f.)
-> "Death at Double-X Ranch"
#5 "First Among Sequels"
-> Jane Austen: "Pride and Prejudice"
-> Rowling: Harry Potter

The fifth book takes place in 2002, whereas the others are back-to-back, and take place in the 80's, I believe. While I would definitely not consider all the books he makes references to as classics, there are an awful lot that are. The author has a better list of book references on his website. Also, some members of the Fforde Ffan group have listed books references on the threads.
Hi, litlegeek! I didn't realize you were starting it soo soon. Fast reader? ;) Yes, these books are hilarious! :) I really enjoyed "Jane Eyre," so even though there are five books so far in the Thursday Next series, "The Eyre Affair" is still a favorite of mine. I loved the Richard III, too, as well as the 'Will Speak' machines.
This is so much fun! but I'm running out of ideas! I have have to reskim the book to get some ideas! but this is great! I love letting my inner child out to play!
Awesome! I'm so happy you're going to read it. Those books are excellent! :) I don't think you need to reread "Jane Eyre" over again before starting "The Eyre Affair." Rather, it would be less satisfying if you'd never read "Jane Eyre" at all previous to reading "The Eyre Affair." :) So long as you remember the basic story of "Jane Eyre" you should be just fine. :)

If you're a rereader when it comes to classics like I am, you may chose to reread some classics in the future before rereading the Thursday Next series. Let me know how you like the book after you've read it? (Or the Fforde Ffans group, which you're most welcome to. :)
*sings* I'll never tell! *wink, wink, wink*

(No, it's not a nervous tic.)

Glad to hear things are still going well. Get some down time, you sound like you needs it, homes!

later, gator

~*geeky wave*
You're welcome. What kind of person would I be if I didn't check on you after you checked on me when I disappeared earlier this summer? :) I hope you're friend pulls through and that your mother-in-law gets better soon.
(Btw, no worries about me and drugs, ever. :) That's so amazing that you can knit socks. I think Hermione would be proud to have had you in S.P.E.W. :)

I must say that I like how it's become a very calm place to the HE group, however we should get on with it and get that ring put away. I haven't read the thread since I left for work today, so I'll have to catch up on it now. :)
Yo! I'm beyond nosy, I totally read your post on K's page, but wait, she would do the same to me too! lol

I just dropped by to say that I'm sorry you've had such a rough week! *hugs* I hope that your hubby's mom is doing better. Its awesome that you stood by your friend during such a frightening time :)

Hope to see you soon at the Hog x! The place isn't the same with out you!

Post Script: Sirius says "Hi" *winks*
Right now, the Giants can win all they want. They're so far back it won't make a big difference. I just don't want BALCO Barry to hit the record breaker against the Dodgers. I was reminded of the little showoff pirouette he did a few years back to show up Chan Ho Park. And the guy wonders why people can't stand his smug self.
Thanks so much littlegeek! :D
I saw you mentioned something about the Song of Ice and Fire series being made into a TV series. Do you know when/what channel (company) is doing it?
His name is Studley? Nope, haven't read the thread since maybe 2am LT time last night. Off to the threads, though I dare say rather cautiously. ;)
Oh, my goodness! I thought you should be the first to know - I was wondering around the mall after work today, waiting to be taken home, when I found ... "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" deluxe! Three copies were sitting there on a shelf just staring at me, for $45. I was in denial of what I was seeing, and thought, Nah, that can't be it. But it was! So of course, I bought one and will donate the other to a children's hospital as I'd previously considered. I'm hoping the kids will like it, since the hospital I picked doesn't have much money to purchase things that will entertain them. One of my co-workers has a sister in hospitals a lot, and she seemed to think it was a great idea.

Btw, did you ever let the centaur go back to the forest? ;)
Sorry to have chased you off! I guess you felt a twitch in your book-throwing arm, and you figured it was best for the innocent bystanders if you just left, eh? ;-)
Hi, littlegeek! Guess what? I got a new computer yesterday! :) My GeekSquad guy said the old one would have cost more to repair than a new computer would. I'm still learning how to use it, and have lots of catching up to do here. Btw, I wouldn't say LT isn't still friendly - I've been bombarded with posts while I've been gone! We have a friends option now? Once I catch up, expect to see a post from me again. ;)
It's going to be a while. :o/ I have little free time in my immediate future.
thank you for being my friend!HAHAHAHA!
It's not so bad... It's more suburban than socal to my mind at this point. As far as pagan vs. Ren Faire, as far as I can tell, there's always been a bit of overlap in me head between the pirates and the pagans and the SCA & Ren Faire and Goth & BDSM scenes and the burners. You're all the crazy people. ;)
I just moved to Huntington from San Francisco and knew quite a bit of the Renaissance Faire people from there. One of my better acquaintances in San Fran was a guy who's released a couple of albums of Sea Chanteys, named Walt. Just reading your profile, I'd guess that there might be a bit of overlap between our acquaintance sets.
Why do I think that you and I are bound to know a couple of the same people?
Hey there.

I read a few chapters of "Barchester Towers" at B&N tonight, and while it’s not enough to get a feel for Trollope's storytelling, I can at least say that I like his writing style. Also, after reading about him in the introduction (B&N Classics edition) he certainly sounds interesting. I’ll have to knock a few other titles off my TBR pile before I can add any Trollope though--it’s just too tall as it is! Take care, :-)
If you've checked your e-mail, you know my situation. If you haven't read it yet ... my computer became toast. Sigh. But I have an appointment for a repair next weekend after this one. Anyhow, nice long e-mail. :)

I was so afriad of not having a computer all summer long that I pre-ordered a regular edition at B&N, to donate it to the children's hospital where my mom works once I read it. (I still very much want a deluxe edition, and I'm sure the kids would love the book.) Now that all these days have passed and I've gotten a chance to slip online for a bit, I see you found someone with some deluxe editions. Well, hopefully they still have some, anyway. :) I'll have to call them. Thanks so much for looking for me! :)

Hmm, food... I was always the picky eater. :) I'd like to think I'm not nearly as much as I used to be. When it comes to salad, I prefer spinache. I don't eat that much meat, but specifically, fish scares me, and I don't eat meat from cows. (Remember all that mad cow business? It kind of made me stop eating hamburgers. :) I'm always a sucker for grilled cheese sandwiches. Hopefully, I'll catch some HE group LTers this weekend while I have acess to a computer other than my own broken one. If not, I hope to be on a computer at a library next week to use the internet.
Thankyou for the compliment.I am Sorry i must have missed the name , Hogwarts Express in your groups list.
Yeah, last season left a bad taste in my mouth for the most part. I sure did like some of the challenges and seeing what the chefs came up with, but I'm not much for drama. I try to avoid it. I haven't watched any this season, I might if I came across it at the right time, but not interested enough to search it out any more.
Hi, just wanted to say "Hi" because I can now. I'm glad there is another way. :)
You're welcome for the invite. I've haven't discussed the original books, but only because I haven't read them. Feel free to start any threads or discussions on them, though. :) I think some groups members have voiced that they really enjoyed the originals, too.
Just wandering past, but I noticed you "I love books with a dark side, and I'm a sucker for fairies" Have you read Raymond Feists 'Faerie Tale' which is both? great book IMHO.

Annoyingly you can't touchstone in comments. I wonder why.
It takes two to make a conversation, littlegeek, and you held up your end. I still think it is a good book, and sometime would like to talk about the role of "taking trouble" in spirituality. You are right, Greene points to a lot of bothersome things, but then I tend to find life as a whole can be rather bothersome, at least if you let it become big enough.....ah the days when I knew the earth was a flat disk, that bactine would take care of any hurt, and that PF flyers would make run faster and jump higher.
Read your comment on The Shipping News and couldn't agree more. I'm a big fan of audiobooks, strongly preferring unabridged ones. However ... I listened to the abridged version of that story, and even so, it was tedious.
Hey! I'm doing Fargo, North Dakota. My mom, dad, and I are working on running a marathon in every state. This will be our 12th or 13th... I forget. We're just doing it for the health of running consistently though, so I don't have to raise money (though you're always welcome to buy me some books! hehe).

That's great that you do marathons too! We almost did San Diego this year, but went for ND instead. So why do you run them?

You know, I've thought about starting a running group on LT because I haven't seen one and it'd be fun to have the community to encourage each other. Last I checked there weren't any LT running groups.
About your review of Fortress of Solitude. Just reading it, the tears welled up in my eyes in the memory of reading it myself a year ago. Such a beautiful and painful story it is. Thank you for reminding me of it.
Welcome to Books Compared. I don't think the Goddess needs to forgive you - comments of all kinds make the discussion livelier - that's what's so great about our group!
Not embarrassed. I admit I had to look that word up! :) I'd never come across it before. Good vocab on your part! As I said on the thread, you're not an ass, so don't put yourself down. Also, there's no way you could've known. Thank you for the smart comment! :) Apology accepted, and no worries! I'm going to check out the thread again as soon as I finish posting back to the other comments on my profile. See you in the group!
I can recommend "The Extra Large Medium" -- it's about a woman who talks to the dead. well, they talk to her.
Wow! I give my wife a nightly recap of the LT goings-on as well.

I'm going to have a SPEDOINKLE weekend, thank you very much -- we're hitting the bookstores again tomorrow.
Wow! Must have been some pretty powerful catnip of you can't remember whether you were in college when you had it!!!

As for me, "our fore-fathers warned us not to take anything that would make us weak or silly", so I don't. Never did; never will. I can't even drink.

The newest Firesign Theater album I listened to was "Don't Crush the Dwarf; Pass the Pliers". I think the last time I actually listened to it was almost 20 yers ago.

Looks like you joined LT right around the same time I did.

Regards,
WholeHouseLibrary
None taken, and thank you. :) I hang out in the library between classes. There's not much in the way of books. Forty-six puts you at the same age as my mom, who laughed when I said my college's library is backwards for still only using card cataloging. I definitely don't think forty-six is old, though. No worries! :)
I guess you've seen myshelves is back. I just came back to LT and found a post on my profile from her. Kids in their school libraries, huh? :) I guess, okay, but when are we no longer considered kids? :) The reason I ask is because I'm twenty-three.
Will do. Maybe I'll be a lurker and put the group on my watch list. :)
I confess to having a normal likeness for cheese, but nothing more. :)

I'll have to study a few different centuries of British and American lit once I transfer to a four-year college. I haven't read anything by Trollope yet. Have you? Perhaps you can recommend some books to me.
I see what you mean on the cheese business. :) I read a post written by lefty. She loves cheese! I checked her groups, and sure enough... It reminds me of two girls I knew years ago who'd always talk about cheese in funny nosally voices. :)
I went ahead and made a last post. Thanks for following up!
>It was before your "I'm fed up with you people" post.

Now, now, I didn't say that! I'm basically an emotional wimp and unless there is reasonable and calm discussion I bow out of debates pretty quickly, if I get involved at all.

Fundamentalists come in all stripes and I've found there really is no discussion with them. I'm constantly seeking and always questioning. I know I don't have all the answers whereas they feel they have the only valid answers, whether atheist or Evangelical Christian (or Pagan for that matter.)

My stepfather is doing fine. The biospy is on Friday. Thanks for asking!
Was it after my post? If so, I have the thread ignored now. I was trying to have what I thought was a nice discussion and then someone got all weird. I figured it to be a lost cause.

Like you, I saw "Happy Heathens" and thought, "Great!" Little did I realize it was being wrongly used as a term for atheists. You'd think a well-read group like this would know the difference! Ah well.
It only took me one second to know who little geek was. Howdy! Betcha never would of thought I would of found you this way. Actually, this is how I find the multitude of oddities that I send to our lovely Jenya ever so often.

Thanks for the heads up on the Library Thing. Having all the LC numbers plus Dewey, I'm in hog heaven!

Love Ya!
Mikkee the Airy Fairy
Okay, naughty woman. I'm here. Now I need to remember that I do have a life and must get to the next thing. I'll be back to indulge lay-tah!

love~
And can I just say that I LOVED Lamb, and somehow didn't find it blasphemous. I've tried to get through a couple of other Moore novels, and found them tedious. Sometimes an author hits one out of the park for me, and just disappoints after that. Maybe it is like the mistake I made with reading "Roger Ackroyd" as my first Christie mystery; nothing else after measured up.
I totally agree with you about Vonnegut....those are my two favourites, in that order. And "Little, Big" has just ruined fantasy-type novels for me.....if I want something LIKE that I just go to Crowley. (Tried to read other stuff by him, and you guessed it, I couldn't get through it) Somehow I can't get past Smokey Barnable and Daily Alice. YOU gave me that book and I'll always be grateful.
XXOO
Hey Sister - Thanks for turning us on to this addictive site! I'm busy cataloging, and it is wonderful to rethink all the books I have in my library.
I was surprised to see your list doesn't include "The Last Unicorn". Both the girls have been into this lately, and it makes me think of you.
Since I have been busy becoming a teacher I haven't had much time for pleasure reading. I guess I COULD include all the "How to be a teacher" books, and my math volumes, but how boring would that be! The last book I read for fun was "The Devil in The White City", which I completely enjoyed. Grim, but fascinating.
OK, well, I'm going to scope out your reviews for something else to read.
XXOO
Hi, it's Ky. :) I just joined up, obviously. Thanks for giving Mom the heads-up about this place; she passed it on and here I am! Hope everything's well out in your neck of the woods. I'm gonna have to see what books here I need to put on my reading list (and if college has any of them). Hope the trip to Vegas went well!
I started to read you latest review, and then stopped myself after a few lines. I don't want to spoil it for myself. It's on my mental TBR list. :o)
LOL! Your reviews are awesome! And I agree with you on the ones that I've read, too. The Corrections *gag* and Atonement *another gag*... :o) Glad to know I'm not alone.
I'm lazy. That's why. *blush* It's more fun to read other people's reviews than it is to write my own.

Yes, I'm a pagan. I call myself a Zen Druid. :o)

We do share quite a few books, don't we.
Welcome to your new addiction. :-)
