Hi Karen, just wanted you to know that it's been a wonderful day today. Daisy got antibiotics yesterday and more IV fluids, had a really good night last night and seems almost back to her old self today. *huge sigh of relief*. I sincerely thought we were going to lose her. The vet is still not entirely sure what is/was wrong with her, but we've changed her diet - she loves her new food and I think she's going to be okay. We don't have a problem with too much weight with Daisy, but not enough - she's sooo skinny. Tricky when you also have to keep to a low fat diet. Hopefully this new food will suit the bill. Picture a very happy (and relieved) Katherine :-)

I am positive all the good wishes and thoughts from the GD helped, I know they did for me. Thank you so much :-)

Yep, the second box arrived a few days after the others. I have all my new titles added to my library, I think. (I keep finding things.) I seem to be adjusting to retirement fairly well. The days are never long enough. Enjoy your visitors - tell them I'll vouch for the comfort of the guest bed! I'm off tomorrow to see my grandbabies and go cheer for the Cornhuskers. (I have season tickets.) The ever-faithful, ever-hopeful fans are sure this year is going to be better. (I do most sincerely pray that is is!) Thanks again for everything.

My Kindle is fine and you are so sweet to ask! I hadn't realized the proper protocol for re-charging it and the young man working customer service set me straight. I put it to one side and let it charge for two to three hours (with the wireless turned off) and it is working just fine now.

Remember I've only had mine for about a week so there's lots I just haven't mastered as yet.

I will say that I like the device immensely. I am holding myself back a little because I am not all that fond of the idea of licensing content as opposed to actually owning a book. But I expect to get use out of this funky little thing and perhaps even a freelance article or two.

Our ferry gets in Friday afternoon at 2:15 and we're taking the 3:15 p.m. ferry home on Sunday. It's almost a 3 hour ferry ride. I've been on the Port Angeles ferry before, and naturally the BC Ferries, but never the Victoria Clipper, so the new experiences will start right away. I love going on the ferry. :-)

I think anyone with such wonderfully good taste as to have two miniature schnauzers automatically is a svelte sophisticated woman - your picture proves it! :-)

You have already been such a tremendous help researching the Inn at Queen Anne for us. I believe Sandragon, her brother and his girlfriend and I are going to just grab a taxi from the ferry terminal to go to the Inn. Sandragon called and they're very close to each other and between the four of us it will be very inexpensive. Thank you very much for the offer.

Can you believe it's only a month now until we meet? The time has been going by so fast! It's getting very exciting now, my passport is all ready and waiting, I'm starting to think what clothes to bring. Fun! I can't wait to meet you in person (and Nicky and Greta Garbo if possible).

I'm sorry to hear you've got a bad cold. That's crummy :-( You're probably having this crummy weather we're having too, can you believe this is June??? Feels more like March!! So maybe bundling up with some hot lemonade, and your decongestants (sp??) and a couple of cute little dogs would be just the ticket mmmm?

Pippin got his first grown up clipping today, now he doesn't look like a puppy anymore. *sigh* And his ears aren't glued anymore but free for the first time, so he's flapping them around all the time like he can't figure out what these things are on each side of his head! Poor little guy, he's all worn out.

Take care of yourself, hope you're feeling better soon.

I've used Imagevenue for a few years now and found it easy to use, especially for posting thumbnails on forums etc. Not sure yet while it didn't work properly on LT, I'll put it right eventually. (Nowadays I take my time over everything!). I trust you liked Leo; when I first brought him home from the dog rescue my younger sister visited to inspect him(she had trained dogs professionally) and her verdict was he was a dominant dog and untrainable and that I was probably the only person with the temperament to handle him. Well we did share 14 very enjoyable years, he had a terrific sense of humour! And my flower borders still have sterile patches where he used to cock his leg.

So you were at folklife on Saturday? I was there too (mid to late afternoon.) Quite a spectacle, isn't it? Good food. I used Tawnya's Nikon D80 to snap some pictures of the festival. They'll probably show up on Flickr within a week, if she uploads them. It was wonderful weather for an outdoor festival, wasn't it?

You sound like you're busier than ever these days. That's great. I'm actually getting out more too. I love the obedience classes with Pippin and want to take him to more. It's really fun training him, he's so smart (maybe too much?). Yeah, he's starting to bite less which is very nice on my hands, fewer little nicks and scratches these days - those things hurt (I'm such a wuss)!

I'm trying to get him "socialized" to as many new experiences as I possibly can, so we go out and about, meeting people, dogs, walk piers, beaches, dog parks, the mall. He's pretty good, more with people than other dogs, but he's getting better all the time.

Thank you for the note! It was the first one I ever received on this site! :) You wrote me a note on Feb 28th, but I haven't logged in lately. Finally getting ready to log in some more of my collection - we are having a sleet/rain/snow storm here in Mpls tonight/tomorrow. No, I wasn't in the Peace Corps, but served in the USAF, and lived in Germany for 6 yrs, plus various places around the country. One of the reasons I have been AWOL from LibraryThing is that I am recovering from a brain aneurysm! Mine wasn't ruptured, but I had two surgeries, the last one just a month ago. Doing great, and still able to READ - YEA! In fact, I won't have any restrictions after I recover - except no scuba or skydiving. I can live with that!
Yes, we have a lot of books and interests in common! Not only that, but I will be retiring from the military in 3 yrs (will be 48) and am thinking about becoming a school teacher in my next life...would like to teach for int'l school system and travel some more!

GD is pretty cool. I think the discussion on the Arthur read has slowed somewhat; we all went at it with such a vengeance at first. Maybe we'll come up with another fun topic later. Be watching for the theme of "Women and religion" that's coming up in later months on Girlybooks. I had a hand (or mouth) in getting that one started b/c of my comments about The Mists of Avalon that I posted to Girly... I can't wait to discuss our books that month.

I may not have provided sufficient instructions. When you are viewing the photo's individual page, click "ALL SIZES" from the button list right above the photo. On the new page tat opens, "Large" is the default view. Click on "Medium." Now scroll down to view the text box immediately under your photo. It should have a lot of HTML gobbledygook. Highlight all of the text in the thread and press CONTROL+C. Then, on the LibraryThing thread page, start a post. Press CONTROL+V inside the text box. Hope this does the trick!

Pippin and Daisy are doing great. I love Pippin's curiosty about everything, although I've lost my oven mitts, we have to retrieve Mark's slippers at least twice a day and the floor gets washed a lot! Daisy likes her quiet time with me at night when we cuddle in bed while I read. She makes the most of that.

I get them at Eddie Bauer. I went to the shop at the mall to try them on first, but they didn't have my length. They are sometimes cheaper to buy online anyway because a couple of times a year they have a 'buy one get one half off' sale. They have quite a few styles and lengths, etc. And they have a sale link, too!

Hi Karen, oh I wish you lived closer and could drop in every day for a cup of coffee and I could cuddle the baby and you could cuddle Pippin. Wouldn't that be fun? I am so looking forward to meeting in person this summer (or whenever we decide), it's going to be great.

I have to go to a big family reunion in Vancouver, leaving tomorrow, have to be away from hubby and Pippin (and Daisy) for 4 days, gonna be hard. I think my husband might be a little tired by the time I get home. Pippin sure keeps us going.

Hi Karen, just a quick visit while my hubby is getting ready. We're almost out the door to go and pick up Pippin. Just wanted you to know I'm thinking about you and will be enjoying Pippin for both of us! ;-) I know what you mean about puppy-envy. There were years when we lived in military housing and didn't want to get a dog in that environment (too many children, too many dogs, too packed together, too much of everything), and OH! I missed having a dog big time!!! But you have lovely Greta Garbo and sweet Nicky.

And think of us and probably the sleepless nights ahead of us :-)

The breeder has been handling Pippin lots, as the runt I think he's been the favourite and been rubbed on his back and cuddled and probably down-right spoiled. She gave us a great little puppy training manual that has some wonderful tips, good refresher.

Ooops, gotta go. *hugs*, wish us luck, I'm nervous!!

Thanks for the message. The whole meet-up idea sounds fun. My only constraints are travel and time. I have no car, and a non-managerial job, so I'm afraid major travel is out of the question for me. A Seattle/Washington State meet-up is something I can get behind, though. It'd be enjoyable and fascinating to put faces and voices to screen names. It'd also be a blast to have an international LT meet-up (say, in NYC or London), but that seems financially improbable.

P.S. Aren't we having beautiful weather today? I've been looking longingly through the library windows here (in the Columbia Center where I work).

I love Fool of a Took, and then drneutron's idea of going with Pippin for the pet name is perfect too and my husband agreed, so that's what the pup's name will be now. What fun. Hi Maggie - My visit should leave a dot on the NW corner of Oregon today - the map loco is really neat to watch. Do you have a lot of e-books? I haven't used Kindle (yet) but have over a hundred e-books (most not entered yet). I like being able to make the type on my screen large enough to not strain my eyes.

Good morning Karen, I just got an email from the breeder with some new puppy pictures so I'll post one on the GD so everyone can see.

We're getting a boy, I think we're going to call him Torben, means "Thor's bear" in German (from the internet) and they look like little bears sort of right now ;)

We're not going to bring him home until the middle of March at the earliest or maybe even a little later. She's not in a hurry to let them go, we want him to be as ready as he can be - the breeder said the same thing about longer with mom, a little easier perhaps with potty training.

I'm going to look into what puppy training is available here. Our daughter just got a puppy a few months ago and takes him to training one night a week and they both get so much out of it, I'd really like to do that as well. I really like your idea of the tummy rub and had already mentioned it to my husband. Daisy lets us both do it to her all the time, she loves it, so I'll make sure I do it to the puppy from day 1.

I find it both endearing and a little heartbreaking that the puppies were born the day Lady died. Taken away and given the same day. Maybe meant to be? She's always with me, there's never a day I don't think about her.

WooHoo Karen! You got your Kindle!!!!! I'm so excited for you! That's awesome! And you're actually still visiting LT and the GD I can't believe it. I think I'd be so busy playing and reading my Kindle I'd be away for ages, but then it's kinda hard to stay away isn't it? We're all too much fun ;-)

Finally got the chance to get to the breeder's home today and see the puppies. They're 3 weeks old today and sweet as anything, as of course they would be. We've paid our deposit. The breeder is a book reader - SHE LET ME BORROW 2 BOOKS!!! I TOLD HER ABOUT LT!!! AND THE GD!!!! AMAZING! I feel like I've found kindred spirit. It was a very exciting, (and tiring) day. Didn't mean to yell, just excited.

So now we go and visit every chance we get so we can watch the puppies grow, everybody get to know everybody. The dogs are in the house and will be with the family as they grow up. They're not kept out in kennels. I really like this woman a lot and am thrilled with the whole thing. Beautiful dogs!

Have fun reading your Kindle - as I know you are - I'm so so happy for you, I'm glad it's everything you were hoping for. Just be careful in the bath ;)

Just got your message. I hadn't had a chance to go on LT all weekend until this morning. I noticed you said you got the email about your kindle being shipped, thought about sending you a congrats message, but I got distracted... Anyway, you beat me to it!

So, congrats and hopefully when you get home tonight it will be waiting for you!

Yes, I still love my Kindle. Just finished Wuthering Heights yesterday and have started Lawrence's Sons and Lovers. Can't see what all the fuss is about with Sons and Lovers, but maybe something happens later in the book... or maybe its just too tame for today's standards.

Its funny, I have always read quite a bit, but now I'm like in a reading marathon. The kitchen is a mess, laundry is piling up, the dogs want to go for a walk... and I need to add tags to my LT library... but I have my nose in my Kindle.

I'm thinking there will be plenty of books available for you... and I've heard that Amazon is going to be starting up some more magazines for the Kindle, specifically Science Fiction, Mystery, that sort of thing. Can't think of the names off hand, it was mentioned in one of the discussions on the Amazon site.

So, I'm starting to ramble... oh, I saw you joined pro and con! Its fun to read, but easy for me to get way behind, there is so much activity. I'm wondering if progressive and liberal will start back up again...

I'm thinking of changing my user name to something more creative, some obscure character in a book maybe. bereader is pretty lame.

Hey maggi: I remember in the late 50s on KING AM Radio there was an on-air person by the name of Dave Ballard who had a wonderful reading voice who used to do readings on Sun eves. Some of my favorites were from [Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House], he read from [The Prophet] also & many other things too! He plalyled classical music & did a reading or two during his shift of about 3 hrs. ea week. Loved to listen to him. That was before I even knew there was such a thing as public radio! I was 9 yrs. old when we got our first TV in 49 & there was only one station in the Seattle aerea for a long time-KING-TV & it was only on a few hours a day. Before they would come on the air each day they would broadcast test pattern & we would sit there and watch it we were that anxious not to miss anything. Of course there really wasn't much to watch any way as it was mostly locally produced stuff & would be laughable today but then it was'the only game in town'! 8^)

I was poking around your library for good dog training books in anticipation. "The Other End of the Leash" and "How To Be Your Dog's Best Friend" look promising, what do you think? Would you recommend them? How about your schnauzer books? We're going to have to get a new crate as we gave our old one to our daughter. Lots of time yet, but the middle of March will be upon us in no time.

Hi Karen,

I didn't think I would be up for a puppy, but I miss Lady so much that I want as much time as I can with the next dog we have - I'm greedy! Daisy is 12 so I know time is precious with her. So far I've just been in contact with a kennel in Nanaimo - just started feeling the waters so to speak. The lady there was very kind. She has two, two-week old puppies now and a new born, preemie from a litter that was lost along with it's mom. She's working hard to keep the preemie alive so didn't have much time to talk with me, but we're going to keep in touch over the next while and then my husband and I'll go down to visit. So we'll see what happens. I've never dealt with a kennel before, Lady and Daisy were rescues that I got through my sister, so I'm not sure of the etiquette, if it's okay to source out other kennels while in touch with the first one.

There's even one kennel listed - Key Schnauzers in Lynnwood that has puppies now. I have no idea if the kennel is reputable or not, we were going to call them after checking out the Canadian ones.

Thank you so much for everything you said Karen, I know I thanked everyone, but I knew you especially would understand what I was feeling. It happened so quickly and unexpectedly, one minute she was in the backyard chasing a pheasant and the next she was paralyzed and in great pain. I can't seem to stop crying and neither can my husband. Poor Daisy just wanders around the house lost, but nevers lets me out of her sight. I think getting a puppy would be a good thing for her, I hope so.

Ooo! I look forward to seeing the card.

One of the things that bugs me the most about cards is how one-use-only they are. And it's not even because I'm green - I'm not as green as I should be - it's just because so many cards are so pretty (or funny or whatever) and once you give them away, that's it, end of story, nobody else will ever see them.

So I can tell you right now that I adore the idea and I can't wait to see how you did it.

Oh, btw, I agree with your comments on progressive and liberal.. I wanted to comment as well, but figured I would get flamed... and well, being who I am, figured I would just sit back... and watch him/her destroy him/herself. Although my heart rate really got up there... nothing a walk in the neighborhood won't calm.

Thanks for the the nice welcome. After a sputtering start, I am starting to feel more at home now. We seem to have quite a bit in common, although not too many books... I have a feeling once I get more of my book titles input, that may change.

Hi again,

So I'm here to remind myself that I DID say the weather doesn't get me down in December 'cause I'm so busy with Christmas. ! O what a day we're having!! The wind is howling, the rain is pouring buckets, it's dark and dreary. Are you getting this system too? It would definitely be a very good day to stay in, drink mulled cider and decorate our house, but we're out of essential groceries so we have to brave the elements instead. Guess I'll enjoy the mulled cider this afternoon instead :-)

I'm reading a delightful adult fairy tale right now called The Book of Flying. It's almost poetry, stories within stories and I'm finding it hard to put down. I'm so excited about the Secret Santa - I've peeked under the tree at yours and I've added your gifts to my wish list...they sound so good - lucky you!! I think you will be pleased. Hey! Are you being evacuated? I saw where they are evacuating parts of Bothell. I suppose that if you are I won't get an answer to this. Anyway try to stay dry & this too will pass! All that snow we had is now gone all 12 inches-we were 'chinooked'-it rained & warmed up & now we have mud! 8^)

Your poor grandson (and you driving so long)! All our schools were closed yesterday too. Hopefully it will be better for all of us today eh? I hear you about the flooding and rain, we're getting it here too, unbelievable how much water. We had to go out yesterday to get a few groceries and parts of the roads were just lakes. There's been terrible flooding south of us. Luckily we're like you and live on a bit of hill so we've been able to stay high and dry. But amazingly all that snow - almost 2 feet (from 2 days ago) is almost all gone now. Weird weather!

I'm knitting a funky scarf for my cousin in England so I'm listening to the new Naomi Novik, Temeraire book on my iPod while I knit, with appropriate breaks for reading and LT :-)

Hi Karen,

Yes, yesterday and the day before we got LOTSA snow, but actually it was kinda fun. Hubby and I were out twice yesterday shovelling and the neighbours came over and helped which made it all fun (it helped that our snow was light and fluffy, thank goodness). It warmed up overnight and now it's pouring rain!!! So all the snow will melt. But they don't have the equipment to clear out the parking lots where my husband works so he got the day off today - bonus! :-D

Do you find the snow sticks to your dogs fur/hair? It clumps dreadfully on Lady and just brushes off of Daisy - weird. Neither dog is very impressed with the weather and takes a lot of coaxing to go outside.

Thanks for the suggestion, American Pie, Slices of Life sounds like it would be a fun read and I've added it to my wish list. I'm really enjoying The Pillars of The Earth, almost finished it actually - helps being housebound by snowstorms!

Yes of course, I accept. You are already on my friends list. I worked one summer at a kid's dude ranch camp near Bothell. I was a horse wrangler-I got paid to ride horses. I'd have paid them to let me do that! I rode my own horse up there so I could use her on the job & you won't believe my route-the median strip of 405. Nowadays you would not dare to even think about that; at that tine, I beleive it was 1965, the traffic was nothing like it is today! Well did you get any of the white stuff there? We got 8+ inches here on Thurs. now it is getting real cold, brrr! Have a great weekend! 8^) Vanye

Thought I'd tell you about a book I just discovered called [Vanishing Seattle] which I'm sure you'd like (you may already have it, of course. But I'm gonna get it as soon as my check comes. I glanced through it & it has lots of good stuff. Do you remeber the Seattle Rainiers minor league baseball team? They played @ Sick's Seattle Stadium on Rainier Ave. S. right next to the Rainier Brewery. we went to a lot of games especially on Lady's Night. My Gandparents lived in South Seattle not too far from the stadium. I used to stay w/them a few weeks in the summer when I was grade school age & when I went to town w/Grandma I stuck to her like glue cuz Seattle was a big scary place to a little girl who lived out in the country where we didn't even have electricity when we first moved there from Walla Walla. Downtown in Seattle the curb stones were high (for a little girl) & if you stepped off of them the bus drivers would run right over you or so I thought! Seattle was a big part of my childhood even though I lived outside of it; we went there a lot-it was our big city! Vanye 8^)

lol good morning Karen, yup, we must be twins, fairy tales and talking water rats and moles :-D The thought that JRRT loved those books just delights me no end.

My hubby and I went and saw Beowulf yesterday and enjoyed it. But it's been years since I studied it and my memories of the original story are faulty so I'm revisiting it today.

Our weather is the same as yours, but I tried to take advantage of the sun while it was here and soak up every sunbeam.

Isn't it funny how retirement can be so busy? My sister and her husband bought a holiday home in Florida and now she finds she's too BUSY to go!!! Imagine!! Just makes me laugh. Hope you're still finding time to read. Take care,

Anytime you can come up to Victoria I will certainly come down to see you! I certainly understand about vet bills. We just finished paying off our vet after a year of paying him for saving our Daisy when she came down with peritonitis last Thanksgiving, i.e. 2006. She was so sick and had to have surgery, being a senior dog, like yours, of course there are all those extra blood tests they do, everything is so expensive. We were just lucky the vet was willing to take payments on time otherwise we couldn't have afforded it at all. I hope your dog gets better soon. I will be here for a long time yet so we have lots of time to get together. I wish I had the money to come to Seattle - I'd love to see the city, it looks so lovely. Maybe someday.

I just turned 50 this year - my sister turned 60 and I've had a lot of fun teasing her. It looks like a great group, no worries. :-D

maggie1944: I live in Yakima WA, been here since 1966, lived in Bellevue before that(1943-1966), born in Walla Walla 1940. We moved in 1943 when my Dad got a Civil Service job at Sandpoint NAS in Seattle. I collect rocks, minerals & fossils. Of course most of all I collect books! I am semi retired (on SS & work part time). I'm a home health care provider. Was a substitute teacher, also worked in a cannery a plastic factory & a sewing factory. Went to college when I was 40 & loved being a student! In or out of school I'm a lifelong learner & avid reader! Only discovered fantasy in the past 8 years however. Used to read only non-fiction before that. Vanye

I grew up in the Puget Sound area & When I was in High school in the 50's our Art class went to the Seattle Art Museum to see Van Gogh's paintings & I bet that you attended that same exhibition to which you refer in the forums. Later in the 70's I also saw the King Tut exhibit @ Seattle Center. Both were 'thrill of a lifetime' experiences. Hope you got to see Tut too! I stood & stared @ the Gold Mask until a security guard insistied that I move on. Guess he thought I might steal it!? Vanye :)

Hi!

You asked in one of the Green Dragon threads about Shine, the new Joni Mitchell? I'm enjoying it very much, but I've always liked almost everything she does, so I might not be the most impartial judge. Her voice has aged, of course--no longer as "pretty" as it used to be, but I think it has a lot of character and life lived in it.

If you decide to buy it, I hope you enjoy it!

Hi again Karen,

Pancreatitis is very nasty, Daisy had it last Thanksgiving and we almost lost her. We're very careful with both the dogs' diets - no scraps! Both of ours are rescues and they're getting on too, Daisy is 11 and Lady is 13 and has really gone down hill this year. I think we just might have to get another soon ;-)

We live about 3 hours north of Victoria in the Comox Valley. Even though I grew up in Toronto I always wanted to live out on the west coast, so this is a dream come true and I love all kinds of weather. Lots of "transplants" seem to dislike the winters here (although they appreciate the lack of snow), but I just put on my rain coat and walk anyways. The ocean, the trees, the banana slugs, the ocean...no complaints! If you ever get a chance to come here let me know - wouldn't it be fun to meet? I'd like that a lot!!

I do a bit of scrapbooking, but I love looking at all the stamping stuff at the craft store. I think that's something I'm going to have to try out one of these days. I bet it's great to do with friends too.

Just thought I'd drop in and say... Hi. :-) We live on Vancouver Island so we're getting the dark, rainy weather now too. I like it though, good to curl up by the fire and read.

I have two mini schnauzers too, aren't they just the best? Daisy and I do therapy dogs, visiting seniors. I'm not sure who enjoys it more, the seniors who get to pet and cuddle a very spoiled little dog, or the very spoiled little dog who soaks up all the attention and goes looking for more!

Nope, Karen I just tune it out! I still manage to get the cooking and laundry done. And I keep the three bathrooms and kitchen somewhat respectable, but I stopped making my kids beds and picking up their rooms when they hit a certain age. ;o) I also don't watch much TV, so I read when everyone else is watching it, or when my husband is watching sports. I also found that LibraryThing was eating into my reading time, so I've toned that down, too.

I've thought about Boeing several times, but they do commercial space work and I really like doing NASA science missions. But it *is* tempting! At least I get to travel out that way every now and then. We generally contract out all our propulsion system work to a company in Redmond. So I get my fix every few years.
