Om mig I'm currently reading my way around the world (aiming to "visit" each of the 192 member states of the UN), and I'm recording what I read on my journey in my thread in the Reading Globally group. I decided not to count things I'd already read, but rather to start from scratch; my aim is not to tick countries off as quickly as possible, but to discover new authors and learn about their cultures through their books.

Om mitt bibliotek (not about my library at all, but rather things that have been recommended to me recently, so I don't forget).

I simply can not understand how my story is so moving to others. For the first time I was able to write down my love for books and how I came to love them and how I almost lost them. To me that was tragic. For others to be able to understand what I had gone through blows me away. LT is really becoming my second home.

My oldest son was a lot like you when he was young. The bedtime story would always last at least an hour and then I still got "Just one more mom....please1" I usually gave in. I couldn't disappoint my child.

Before I was allowed to read a Nancy Drew book I recall every week going to the store and looking at the shelf of books that I thought I would enjoy. The covers seemed to call out to me. It was hard to walk away.

I sometimes lend my friend my books but she refuses to take my good copies. She is one of those odd people that gets a new book and opens it up as wide as she can until she hears the book crack. Her dog loves new books and she lets him bite her brand new book. How crazy is that?

I have bought books that the pages are all yellow and falling out. The books has characture and it smells old. How can you not buy it!

I wish you many many more happy years of reading and hope we can keep in touch.

Hi Rachel,

Ha ha! Good for you! You’re supposed to be enjoying your time out!

Oops! About Bowles, I rechecked the little bio and it says that he was born in 1910 in Jamaica, New York (as opposed to the West Indies) so he was American, after all! Interestingly, he moved to Tangier in 1947 and lived there until his death in ‘99.

So you have green fingers! I should get some tips from you!

We inherited a garden when we bought our home a few years back and I’ve come to love poking around in it. It gives me an excuse to be out enjoying the sun whenever I can! We have culinary herbs, fruit trees, some flowers to which I added fuchsias, begonias and pansies for some additional spring and summer colour, and we bought vegetable seeds that I still have to plant out. Will have to see how it all pans out!

It’s very relaxing and it’s amazing to see the bounty in nature. It can become a full-time job though, if you let it!

Do you dive yourself? We went looking for diving lessons in Mauritius, but all the schools were booked solid for weeks in advance.
Wow! A lake in the middle of a forest ... sounds like heaven!

So you got to practise some of your Polish with your friends, no doubt?!

I, too, put off reading "The Sheltering Sky" for a long time. But I’m delighted to finally be reading it. I think I was afraid to be disappointed. (I didn’t know Paul Bowles was born in Jamaica - I’d always assumed he was American.) Anyway, it’s great so far, no precarious “wading through treacle” ”) I love your simile, by the way!

Pottering...? Any chance you’re into gardening? With spring on the way, I’ve been planting out seeds and seedlings in the last week, in the hope of some lovely colour outdoors in the months to come.

Two-thirds of the way, way to go! You’re amazing! Good luck, and enjoy the rest of your days off.
Wow, tyle języków! Super!

Jeżeli będziesz jechała z Warszawy do Sopotu, to ja mieszkam prawie w połowie drogi. Do Warszawy mam 4,5 h pociągiem, do Sopotu jakieś 3 h. Mieszkam na wsi, niedaleko miasta Bydgoszcz. Toruń (miasto Kopernika) też nie jest bardzo daleko. Będziesz tylko w Sopocie?
Thanks, Rachel!

I’m glad you enjoyed Iris & Ruby. One sometimes needs a gentle read! I loved Iris’ thoughts - how Ruby’s presence warmed her old heart, and her romantic reveries about Xan.

I understand completely about being stuck at your desk, I am too - until the end of next week; then I’m off to Mauritius for some glorious sun and the wonderful warm ocean! Can’t wait!!

I’ve been following your threads and you and the others on the Reading Globally thread have inspired me to spread my wings and "travel" more widely. You have the added advantage of a number of languages – how wonderful!

I have a number of books from your thread on my bulging TBR list, including Nervous Conditions, The Good Women of China, The Pickup – I have yet to read Gordimer.. I also saw that you’d read Alentejo Blue somewhere along the line. Did you like it?

Thanks for the pop-in! Hope time passes quickly, so you can start your vac!
Super :) Dzięki za wizytę. Ja mieszkam w Polsce, ale pracuję na terenie całej Europy - prowadzę szkolenia, seminaria etc.

Jakimi językami mówisz i gdzie aktualnie mieszkasz?

Powodzenia w dalszym odkrywaniu naszego języka i kraju! Jeżeli kiedyś będziesz chciała odwiedzić kogoś w Polsce - daj znać :)

How come you read book in Polish? Are you coming from Polish family? Or maybe it was your decission to start to learn it?
I just got done perusing your library. Since we've exchanged messages on the 75'ers page, I thought I'd look at your library, especially since noticing that you are in Belgium. Have you lived there long or are you a native of the country? I was very impressed to see that your libray has so many french and spanish titles. What a blessing to be able to read so many good books in their original language. I've often wondered how much is lost in the translations I read. There were a good many books in your library that interested me and I will be coming back there for suggestions to put on my wish list. I noticed that you've read Plainsong by Kent Hruf and also The Tie that Binds. I've read Plainsong and the sequel Eventide and couldn't put either down. Anyway, cool library!!
Hey, Rachbxl, Thanks for leaving me the note about [Mosquito]. I'm glad you're liking it. It's a book that I'd like to see get more readers.
