Om migI'm an IT technician in a university library, but most of my "so called career" was as a paraprofessional cataloger. I still haven't discovered "what I want to be when I grow up" but I enjoy reading, writing, making art quilts and beading. My degree was in English and I started graduate school in literature, as well, and then I realized that I don't enjoy "dissecting" literature--I want to enjoy the pleasure of reading. What a relief it was go to from "have to" books to true pleasure reading.

Om mitt bibliotekFavorite authors include, but aren't limited to: Anne Tyler, Elinor Lipman, Barbara Pym, Virginia Woolf, Anita Shreve, and Barbara Kingsolver. My library here on LT is mostly made up of some of the books I've enjoyed most over the last 30 years. Trying to make an exhaustive list of what I've read is just impossible, and I'd rather have suggestions made from the books I enjoyed more.

Barb,

I am amazed and inspired by the size of your library. I would also like to ask a question of you regarding your duties as a tech in an academic library if you do not mind such a personal approach. After 25 years of office admin. in the financial industry (mostly) I am changing careers and am in a library program at a Canadian college. One aspect of the program I enjoy a great deal is the technical aspect. My question is: what aspects of the job (if any) have you had to deal with, that have been more difficult than you expected? A second query would be: what courses have you taken over the span of your career, have you found to be the most valuable? Thank you for any assistance you can provide in this area. Ultimately the type of job I apply for will be dictated by the economy and the availability of any jobs in the library.

Liz
I enjoyed reading your reviews and they have given me several ideas for new writers to look out for. I too enjoy Elizabeth Berg, Anne Tyler and Anita Shreve!
best wishes

Barb -

Your comment about Ladder of Years made me laugh. I suspect most moms have had the urge to escape at least once or twice during those difficult child-raising years. It's just that not everyone is honest enough to admit that to herself (or anyone else!)

My family used to vacation on the Eastern Shore every summer when the kids were growing up, so the setting of this book was particulary appealing to me. I sometimes wished I could find the imaginary town Delia escaped to and spend a few weeks there myself.

Anne
this is an amazing picture!
