This is my new kitten, Gwennie aka Milady Guinevere.

We have a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, whose name is Arthur, after the legendary Welsh King. Hence, Gwennie.

Truth be told, she is named after the young protagonist appearing in a debut novel by Mari Strachan entitled The Earth Hums in B Flat, which is an outstanding story featuring an endearing and intrepid (s)hero, named Gwennie, like my kitten. The novel came first and is pretty unforgettable.

Before returning to Tallahassee, FL in 2005, we lived in San Diego, CA for 19 years.

Literacy Volunteer Tutor-

During part of the time whilst living there I was a tutor for the READ San Diego program and had a wonderful learner that I will always love and admire.

"Real Life" Book Club -

I am one member of a small group of women who meet irregularly to discuss the book we have selected and drink wine and eat nibbles. I jokingly call us the Wine, Women & Books Club.

Family:

I am a grandmother of two, one of whom is a reader.

My daughters both like to read but find it very difficult to find the time and/or energy to work, parent, have some relaxing time and also read anything that is not on a website, a blog, or in a report for work.

My husband reads most every day, as I do. We often read the same book. However, not simultaneously. He is also a member of LT.

He retired from a career in IT. He loves dual-sport motorcycles, wood working and cooking East Indian dishes that are complex both in flavor and cooking method, with many exotic ingredients. Yum.

LT Community -

I'm enjoying making friends through LT and find it reassuring and wonderful that so many of you read the same books that I read and love. You are some of the funniest brightest people I've met. wish we could all meet at the local pub for a real time chat.

ooooh! You added Richard Powers' Gold Bug Variations. I've been meaning to do the same for years. I really like the novels of his I've read so far.

Merry Christmas, and I'm glad to see how many people below have got your back and are keeping good track of you!
Good Morning Ruth,

I just wanted to stop by to wish you a Merry Christmas and hope you are feeling better! Joanne
Ruth

I'm just checking in to say what a delight it was to talk with you last night. I hope you are feeling feeling better today.

Hugs,
Linda
Dear Ruth-- I hope you are well enough to be on LT and get this message today. How did yesterday go? Any answers? You are in my thoughts a lot. If I don't catch you here, I will try to give you a call.

Best wishes, Berly
Ruth
Thanks for your message. We were at our neighbors house for dinner and I did not have my cell phone with me. I'll call you later this afternoon.

Thanks for keeping me in the loop.

I hope today will be a better day.
Hi, Ruth - "Old husbands" prob all begin to look alike once past a certain age. And I'm past that age for sure. I don't do "threads" I guess. I'm not even sure what they are. But I usually duplicate my reviews on both LT and Amazon.com. Enjoy Florida. It's freezing here in MI - high around 20 today forecast. Good reading weather. My wife has begun preparing her annual giant batch of pierogies for the holidays. Hmm ... See you have The Florist's Daughter. I very much enjoyed that book. Merry Christmas to you and your own old guy, Tim
Hello, Ruth - Just read your "mini-review" of Amy and Isabelle. I just finished reading and reviewing Strout's ABIDE WITH ME, so now I've read all three of her books. I am simply in awe of this woman's "way with words" and the way she gets inside the skins, minds and souls of all of her major characters. If anyone ever deserved the Pulitzer, this woman did. I will be awaiting eagerly her next book, whatever it is. Since I see you are a dog/cat person, I will recommend one of my favorite dog books: Hal Borland's The Dog Who Came to Stay. It's a memoir written about forty years ago, but I just found it a year or so ago, and loved it. Memoirs are my new passion, after reading mostly fiction for fifty years or so. Maybe because I've been writing my own. Three books so far and working on a fourth volume. I agree that it would be interesting to meet many of the people I've met here on LT. I've arranged some great book swaps with some - other authors and readers. At my daughter's urging I tried Facebook, but canceled my account after only a few weeks. LT is much more my speed - and the people are a lot smarter. Nice "meeting" you. - Tim
Ruth,

I just hear that my local NPR station will be having David Sedaris' Santaland Diaries on Saturday and Sunday nights. (Check your local listings.) I listen every year. It's hysterical.

Bonnie
Ruth
Just stopping by to see how you are feeling these days. Any better?

Hugs
Linda
Heh heh. "Brent". After knowing him as "Enrique Freeque", it makes him seem smaller somehow. Good to know ya, and your review of The Cave Painters has me intrigued. Are you on the Salon?
Hi Ruth,

Just wanted to stop by and thank you for your kind words re: my review of Wolf Hall on my thread. Also, to tell you I am continuing to send good thoughts your way and hope you will soon be on the road to good health.

Hugs.

Bonnie
Happy Thanksgiving to you!

I hope you are feeling well and that you will have a wonderful day!

Linda
Hi Ruthie- I hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving! You are a special person, I just thought I would let you know that!

Mark
How was your birthday today?
Happy Birthday To You!

May your day be as special as you are!

Love
Linda
Dear Ruth,

Thanks for the message. I hope the tests went well today . . . I'm thinking about you and hoping for the best. Not knowing is such a scary thing . . . so I hope your doctors come up with some definitive answers for you.

Take care.

mollygrace
Hi, Ruth.

Just stopped in to wish you and your family a happy Thanksgiving. You are one of the people I am thankful for . . . helping to make me feel so welcome here. Regards to Gwennie and Arthur.

mollygrace
Hi Ruthie- Just stopping by to say hello and check up on my friend! As usual, I miss seeing you around. I finished "People of the Book", which contained some great writing and I'm well into "The Cellist of Sarajevo", which has been fantastic! Are you reading "Half Broke Horses" or "Wolf Hall", or both? A friend is reading "Half Broke.." and promises to pass it on to me, when she's finished. Hope you are feeling better and having a good Sunday!
Mark
Ruth-

Still Alice, Black Swan Green AND Wolf Hall -- you must be in 7th heaven. Bonnie
I have "Sworn to Silence" at home on the TBR pile. I keep thinking I should read it but somehow it just keeps getting pushed aside. Thanks for telling about it. I won't get rid of the copy just keep it hanging around for awhile.
Ruth-- I am so flattered and honored that you have invited me to be your friend, AND that you like my library. I, too, have enjoyed your comments in the various threads I follow. I think your LT name is so apropos: you always have a kind word for everyone and love just seems to flow effortlessly from you. What a blessing you are to us all. :)

With love and laughter, your new friend,

Kim(berly)

PS--Be well!
Hi Ruthie- Just swinging by to check on you and hoping you are feeling better! I'm getting ready to wrap up "People of the Book", which has been very good and I'm well into "Jar City", an excellent police procedural set in Iceland. Take care my friend!
Mark
Hi There.

A quick message to say I'm thinking of you!

Hugs,
Linda
Hi Ruth,

Stopped by just to say I'm thinking about you and hope you will soon be feeling up to snuff, as they say. Sure do miss you beautiful comments:-)
Hi Ruth - I stopped by to thank you for stopping by my thread but then got totally distracted by your adorable kitten. Oh she is a cutie!! And a wonderful name and namesake! Best wishes to you and your new tabby baby! Joanne
Ruthie;
I just wanted to pop over and congratulate you on your great and HOT REVIEW of "A Far Better Rest". Well done my dear.
I hope things are going well in your neck of the woods and that you are feeling much better.
Things are much better here and I feel like I am beginning to settle back into my life. Chrissy is doing great, is in therapy learning to walk and talk again. She says some words and walks with a walker but you can tell that "Chrissy" is ALL in there just by looking at her. She might even get to go home on the 11th barring any set backs. So good for her; our little fighter!~!
luv n hugs,
belva
Great review of A Far Better Rest! I've added it to my pile.
Hi Ruth,

Thought you might like to know I just "pimped" your review of A Far Better Rest in Le Salon. Thought you might want to know....and keep up the good work!

Very best,
Brent
Dear Ruth,

Thank you for your lovely note about A Far Better Rest, and for the review. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I hope you enjoy the Aristide Ravel mysteries just as much!

Yeah, what is it about France? Personally I think it's the attitude of the French: they secretly believe they are the superior nation and culture of the world, and they're so confident about that, that they've conned all of us into believing it, too. :-)

Or maybe it's the cheese. Any country with 250 kinds of cheese has to have something going for it.

Cheers,
Susanne
Hi Ruth- Thanks for the heads-up! I'll check into it! Hope you are having a great Sunday, my friend!

Mark
Ruthie;
I am so sorry you are so ill. That is no fun. I hope you are at least able to read a bit. That saved my the last time I was ill and throughout the family crisis.
I will be thinking of you, wishing you well and to be well, and sending my love.
belva
Hey Ruth,

I'm so sorry that you have been feeling so poorly but glad to hear you're finally rallying. I've missed reading your very poetic posts. I can't begin to imagine having to catch up on all the threads. That's one monumental task so good luck to you on that.
Take care, my friend.

Bonnie

P.S. I have Loving Frank on my TBR list so I'm glad to see all the stars you bestowed on it.
Hi Ruth- Thanks for your medical update! I hope they can get this all under control and you can get back to normal. Glad to see you 5 starred "The Likeness". And yes, that's me in my profile picture, so long to Steinbeck for now. See ya friend!

Mark
Ruth- Hey there, friend! Just a quick stop to see if you are doing well. I hope you are feeling better and have a bit more energy. Did you read "The Hunger Games"? I'm well into it and enjoying it. I'm also reading short stories by Hemingway, which have been pretty good. Take care friend!

Mark
Hi Ruth- Good to hear from you, my friend! And yes, it's great having Belva "back"! Glad you are enjoying "The Likeness". Are you joining us on the group read? Sorry, I can't remember. Stop by my challenge, I reviewed "Where Men Win Glory", which I loved. Well, I'm off to work, another chilly damp day. Yuck!
Mark
One more thing Ruth--I read The Deptford Trilogy back in April and loved it.
Hey Ruth,

Just stopping by to say hello. I haven't seen or heard too much from you lately; hope all is well. Take care. Bonnie
Hey, Ruth, I just wanted to let you know how much I am enjoying my Writer's Almanac every day -- thanks to you! I have never really "gotten" poetry, but I am slowly succumbing to its allure. So much meaning in so few words.

Hope all is well with you. I bought The Likeness at our local library sale last night for $2.00. It may be awhile before I get a chance to read it. I'm hoping for a cold, snowy winter here in Missouri so I can snuggle up to a roaring fire and read, read, read. You probably don't get those kind of opportunities in Florida, although I'll be willing to trade places with you about mid-January!

P.S. I am an honorary member of the Bonnie Bunch. I'm considering changing my name to "Bonna."
Ruthie- Sorry to hear about your fatigue! I hope it's temporary! You were wondering about The Bonnie Bunch Book Club, it has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? Well it's a phony. We were just goofin' off and came up with it,since we had all been reading the same books. The list Bonnie sent you, was a compilation of best books of the year, that others had contributed to her thread. Yes, it's a mighty list! Glad you are enjoying "The Likeness". You scared me a minute there! I had a good day today, plenty of reading and now watching the Bears! Adios friend!
Mark
Ruthie- Hey there! I saw a comment or 2 from you on the threads. I thought I would drop you a quick line. How are you coming with "The Likeness"? It sounded like you were enjoying it, at first. I hope it didn't tank on you. I'm currently reading the latest by Krakauer and it's been very good. Have you read any of his work? Hope you are enjoying a great weekend! Later friend!!
Mark
Love your profile picture. Takes me back to reading A Girl of the Limberlost!
Hey Ruthie- Thanks for letting me know you got the book! I sure hope you like it! We take care of each other here on LT and it sure feels special. I'm nearly finished with "Zeitoun" and cannot praise it enough. It looks like it will be an end of the year contender. Watch for my review!! Take care friend!!
Mark
Hi Ruth- I liked your review on "Olive" and I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I think it was easily one of the best books I've read this year and Olive's character is one of my all-time favorite literary creations. Check out my mini-review on my 1st challenge, message #171. I'm not sure if you saw my earlier message, but I got the book out "The Likeness" on Thurs. I hope you get it by the middle of next week. Hope you are having a wonderful weekend, my friend!
Mark
Ruth, (my mother's name!) I do have one Herta Muller which I have not read. I picked it up used when I saw that she was one of the few women who have won the Impac Dublin Award. Now she is one of the few women who have won the Nobel!

Best, Lois

PS: Thanks for all the fine compliments tho' me thinks you are too lavish with your praises.

PSS: I'm still using the apples we picked that day. Two batches of apple crisp and one apple pie made this morning!
Hi Ruth. I'm Charles, aka CharlesBoyd who along with KarenMarie started the "I'll Read Yours if You'll Read Mine," group. I just posted a new challenge. Maybe you'll consider it.

I noticed in a note to you from nannybebette that you had a HOT REVIEW on LibraryThing. How does one get that? Do you ask to have a review selected or does it just somehow happen?

Charles
Hi Ruthie- I finished "The Likeness" today and I hated to see it end. She is a very deliberate writer, likes to take her time but you end up so wrapped up in the characters, you don't want it to finish. You can check out my review! I will get your copy in the post tomorrow. Take care friend!
Mark
Ruthie;
I wanted to pop over and congratulate you on your HOT REVIEW for "Saints in Limbo". It was an excellent review and very well done.
Congrats again,
hugs,
belva
Ruth, It's nice to hear back from you. The people that I have talked to here on LT are such wonderful people.

Our weather is pretty yucky right now. 40's to 60's with rain, rain and more rain. The best thing is the leaves. They are beginning to change!

I hope your friend's yard sale is a success.

Carrie
Hi Ruth,

You don't need to be embarrassed at all. My husband would laugh his head off at this because he thinks no one forgets things on a more regular and consistent basis than me. So no problem. I hope you enjoy the book.

Bonnie
Hi Ruth,
Did The Day the Falls Stood Still arrive yet? Just curious. I think it's been a couple of weeks.
Thanks for your note, Ruth. Richard's reviews are indeed very well written and he obviously has great taste in his mysteries! :-) I hope you enjoy the Aristide Ravel novels as much as he did.
All best, Susanne
I'm right here Ruthie! EnriqueFreeque's here to stay. Sorry for the recent confusion. Underwent brief existential, misanthropic identity crisis. But I'm back. All's well. Thanks for inquiring!
Are you talkin' to me?!
Dear Ruth,

Thank you so much for taking the time to 'show me around' -- your message was very helpful.

mollygrace
You sound like a woman after my own heart, if I may make a play on your name! Thank you for your kind comments about my reviews. You might want to take a look at my blog sometime: http://www.readingtheleaves.com. I would very much appreciate your comments on my reviews there.

I wish you still lived here in the west -- you sound like the kind of person who would be my friend, and very quickly be a very close friend. Do you ever get that feeling about someone just from reading a quick message? I don't know why it is; it's like they've written something in exactly the same way you would have written it.

If you'd like to talk further and more privately, please feel free to email me at tmweyna@gmail.com. I hope you do, because I would like to get to know you better.
Thank you for the message. I'm feeling a little overwhelmed by LT right now and I'm not sure what the 'interesting libraries' designation means exactly, but I appreciate your taking the time to include me.

mollygrace
Thank you so much for your sweet message - you put a smile on my face right after a toddler meltdown. ;) I'm certainly going to appreciate the support when Mr. Max joins the crew - Brooks already knows how to keep me on my toes!

I hope you're having a lovely weekend,
Luxx
Ruth - Thanks for the note. Your Arthur sounds like a mensch similar to my Bella. She is currently working very hard to train our 3 month old German Shepherd the rules of her world.....because as you well know....it is all about Bella (or Arthur) at your house!

Ferris
Ruth- I hope you got your computer updates all taken care of! Yes, I'm a mail-carrier and I have a walking route in a western suburb of Chicago. It's not a bad job, it has it's ups & downs like any other occupation. I'm wrapping up my 23rd year.
Sorry to hear you were not a fan of "13th Tale". I've heard a couple nays on it recently and I thought it was much more beloved. We will probably go with "People of the Book". BTW, I'm nearly at the halfway point of "The Hummingbird's Daughter" and it's been quite excellent. He's an amazing storyteller! Good job on the Hot Review! I had one this week too, just my 2nd overall! Take care friend!
Mark
Hi Ruth,

Great review of Brooklyn. I couldn't agree with you more. I couldn't believe it when it didn't make the cut to the Booker shortlist.
Hi;
Mark and I have been discussing the possibility of another group read in November and want your input. We have narrowed it down to two books at this point. "The People of the Book" by Geraldine Brooks and "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield. So chat it up with friends or us and let us know if you are up for it and what you think. Probably the same plan as with "Pillars of the Earth" which seemed to work out perfectly for almost all of us.
Think it over and give one of us a shout.
hugs and looking forward to hearing from you,
belva
Hi Ruth

Congratulations on your hot review, listed on today's home page.

Hugs to you
Linda
Hey Ruth, Sure would love to be your friend. I feel the kinship already through your comments on various threads on Talk. I don't interact as much as some, but I do enjoy seeing what everyone is reading and what they think about it. Loved the movie Julie and Julia. I will probably read Julia Child's book about France if I can ever "clear the decks." Have a great real life discussion. Isn't talking about books just the greatest? ~Donna~
Hi,
I was interested in your review of Lark and Termite that was on the main page today as I have the book on my tbr list. On the basis of your review I'm moving it up. I see we've read a lot of the same books too. Have you read latest Richard Russo?
Hello Ruth

I'm simply stopping by to say I'm thinking of you. I so enjoy your lovely posts throughout the 75 challenge thread. You are a dear, sweet, kind lady!
Hi Ruth

Congratulations for your hot review listed on today's home page!
Ruth;
I am so very sorry to hear about your kitty and other ills. Even if they don't find out what is wrong with her, hopefully she will pull through. We suffer so with our animals. Almost as much as we did with our children. I came home to a kitty with an injured right front leg. It is not broken as she will let me handle it, but she won't put any weight on it. I fixed up a litter pan and food and water area for her (all 6 of our cats are both in and out) but sadly, she won't stay in the house. She wants to sleep and potty outside. But I know she will be fine in the long run, most likely just a bad sprain so she is much better off than your poor baby.
Aren't we blessed to have the supportive husbands that we do? I appreciate mine more almost daily.
It is very good to hear from you. I hope that once caught up and the grandsons are back in school, I will have more time to communicate with dear LT friends like yourself.
belva
Hi Ruth;
Just got home late yesterday and wanted to stop over and say "Hey, how's it going?"
Have you been reading any good books while I was gone? I only read one complete book while at Robbi's. "Battle Cry of Freedom" and it was mesmerizing. She and my friends kept me very busy for all of the 2 weeks. I was able to almost finish another on the flight home.
It was soo good to get home until I got home and found the dishes hadn't been done in 2 weeks; my last coffee cup was still in the sink. But apparently they ate out a lot. But the hubby took awesome care of the grandsons while I was away and of my mother also (and was happy to do it so I could go and spend some time with Robbi) so I didn't say anything about anything. I am just so appreciative that I was able to go and be with her for those two weeks. I got up at 5 A.M. today and cleaned the bathroom and did the dishes. The rest I will catch as catch can, but at least now the bathroom doesn't smell like a latrine and when I want to eat I can find a clean dish. So it's all good.
We went to the Pocket Sandwich Theater while I was there and they were showing a vaudevillian type play in which the actors interact with the audience. Popcorn fights are the rage and we had a blast throwing popcorn at the actors and other patrons and having popcorn rain down upon us as well. I can't wait to go back the next time!~! It was so much fun.
And they have Half Price Books stores all over the Dallas/Ft Worth/Plano/Irving/McKinny area. I think we hit everyone of them and I had to go to the P.O. and ship books home so as not to have to pay the heavy toll to check baggage at the airport. I travel so light. One very small back pack and my purse. That's it. Needless to say I do a lot of laundry while there, but traveling light just works for me.
Missed you and our conversations while I was gone. Can't wait to catch up on your thread and all the others. But I wanted to say hello as I know it will take time to play catch up.
Will see you on your thread.
belva
Woofie dollface, sweetienubbins! I know, isn't it sad and funny? I wonder how this one will get dealt with.

Stupid trolls. Thank GOODNESS we don't see more of this.

Ditto Whisper1 below.

How's it going, Ruth?

I suppose you know by now I'm not as "good a man" as you once imagined, what with my suspension and all. I was very naughty, Ruth, and I paid a steep price for it ;-)

Hope all's well with you. Just dropping by, checking in, saying hello.

Best,
Brent
Ruth
I'm stopping by to tell you what a kind, sensitive and loving person you are. When reading comments you post throughout the 75 challenge group, I am struck by how supportive and loving you are!

The world certainly needs more people like you!

Linda
Thanks to adding me to your interesting libraries! We have a lot of books in common! I just finished Cupid and Diana -- it's pretty cute and an easy read. I hope you like it too.
Hi Ruth, Thanks for adding me to your Interesting Libraries. I enjoy your comments on the Talk threads. I, too, am a volunteer literacy tutor. I've been working with a 30-yr-old (slightly) mentally challenged woman for almost 2 years. We are making slow progress, but it is so rewarding. Happy reading!
Love that luna moth! I hope to see one in person some day - I don't think we have them in Oregon.
Ruth- How are you? Just a quick reminder: the group read of "Pillars" starts tomorrow! Are you all loose and ready to go?
Mark
Hi womansheart,

I didn't know about John Schwartz's new novel, "The Commoner." I can't wait to read it. I have read "Reservation Road." I really liked that one. Would you like to be friends?
Good morning Ruth;
I am loving your profile page. How very lovely, the luna moth. I have enjoyed reading your posts to the various threads and just need to find yours now.
I, too am a grandmother (of six), they have always called me "nanny" and my youngest niece (who is the same age as my oldest granddaughter) was never able to say "auntie belva". It always came out "auntie bebette" so that is how I got my user name. Just a little LT trivia there.
Anyway, I am sure I've not welcomed you yet, so welcome to LT. I can tell you are enjoying yourself and that is nice to see.
I hope you join the group read for "Pillars". I am really looking forward to that and Mark is doing a great job as "headmaster", is he not?
I will look forward to chatting with you again sometime soon. In the meantime, I will be watching for your thread.
blessings on your day,
belva
Hi Ruth - it's been hot here this last week, but "hot" in English terms: somewhere between 86-90 degrees F. More than I'm comfortable with anyway! The humidity is the killer - I lived in Egypt for a couple of years as a child, but at least the heat there was essentially dry most of the time. That feeling you get like you can't breathe just finishes me off. Fortunately it's been cooler today.

Take care,

Rx
Ruth- Of course,we would love to have you!! I hope you find a copy. Can you try a library? Have you found our group read link ,it's in the 50 Book challenge. Hope you are having a great weekend!
Mark
Hello!
Thanks for your post today. What a wonderful soul you are!

How are you feeling these days?

Linda
Hi, Ruth- I saw you added "Have Mercy On Us All" & "Brooklyn". You can't go wrong on either one. Make sure you let me know. Have you stopped by my 50 Book Challenge, yet? Drop by and say hello .Hope you are having a great day!
Mark
Hi Ruth- How are you? You always leave such nice messages. Do you ever see the responses that I have left you? I never get a reply back so I'm never sure. As far as your question about "Brooklyn" and a group read. I don't remember seeing anything on that. I do know the book just came out,in the early part of May and a lot of libraries are just getting copies, so a group read would have been difficult. It is a beautiful story and I hope you enjoy it. I see you have added "The Circus Fire". This too is an excellent book but much darker and somewhat haunting.
Yes, I'm also saddened by Kathleen's loss. I hope she'll be okay. Take care and see you on the threads!
Mark
Hi Ruth,
Thanks for sharing the quote from Helen Haines. I started reading only in the last few years, following the thread from book to book. LibraryThing has expanded the dimensionality of these threads 7-fold, slowing my search to a crawl while increasing its depth commensurately. Excelsior!
No, the "Good Omens" cover illo is of my mama, not me. *chuckle*

Armloads of books as a kid, well, isn't that the recipe for an interesting life? And isn't an interesting life what we, as parents, want to give our kids? And ourselves, not incidentally....

I don't know who rang the feedin' bell, but the slavering packs of guests have formed. I had to throw a minor hissy to get this coming weekend guest-free, but hey, whatever it takes. I wanna go to the beach sans people who need minding and talking to. Just me, The Divine Miss, a couple books apiecec, and the beach umbrella.

Damn. The doorbell. Another guest.

xoxo my sweetie

Suh-weet! Just saw you'd joined the salon, Ruth! Thank you thank you! Hope you enjoy the threads and discussions. Just noticed you'd input "Sin & Syntax," - are you a writer? I do a little here and there; trying to write a book actually & it's kicking my hind!

Talk to you soon,
Brent
Hi, Ruth- I saw your comments on "The Shack". A friend from work, (we exchange books pretty regular) is going to pass this on to me. I was hesitant at first, now I really don't want to read it. I could take it, say I read it but lying is not an option, ha ha! These literary dilemmas and it's not like I don't have dozens of other books, waiting in the wings. I would also like to read "The Song is You", I'll have to remember that one next time I get to the library. Have a great weekend!
Mark
Good morning Ruth!

Of course, how remiss of moi not to have already sent you an invite. Well, actually, I can't send you an invite to the group because (this'll sound crazy) I left my own group as a gag only to find out that once you leave a group that you've formed, there's no way to rejoin! Crazy. Of couse I'm still an active participant, just not an "official" member. So here's the link to Le Salon Litteraire de Henry Freeqy IV http://www.librarything.com/groups/thequ...

Most have finished Ulysses, some are reading ...tomcat Murr...and next up, beginning Labor Day, will be Bulgakov's, Master And Margarita. Do please join (and invite your other cyber pals too!) and even if none of the books float yer boat, we have lots of fun over there - I try and make sure of it.

Hey, you have a wonderful weekend too, and hopefully our group will help lift your spirits.

Thanks on the pic. A friend of my wife's from facebook sent it to her and I stole it. I used to do a lot of bodyboarding and body surfing in my teens and twenties when I lived closer to the beach (Long Beach). My favorite haunts were S. Carlsbad State Beach, T-Street San Clemente, Salt Creek, Imperial Beach (your neck of the woods) and even the Wedge occasionally, though never on an epic huge day. I miss those days immensely; there's a peace and an inner freedom that comes with being one with the ocean. I've had a few tube rides like that photo, but never with the sun perfectly framed like that. Had to put it up.

Best to you, Ruth! And do join the group!
I'm simply stopping by to say hello and that I hope you are feeling much better today.

Linda
I have had several comments left by you and since I am relatively new to LT I have to ask. What is being a Friend? This is a part of LT that I don't know about. Can you enlighten?

Also wanted to let you know that I love the Thursday Next books. They are perfect for listening to in the car, but I always end up checking out a copy from the library just to see some things. I love the literary puns in these books.
Hi Womansheart,
I got your post on the title of the book The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde, please can share with me the summmary of the book as i was thrill by your simple description of it been very witty, clever, creative and both plot and character driven.
Awaits your reply, thanks.
Mornin' Miss Ruthie Ma'am...I can't fathom that I have two hot reviews the same day! That's unprecedented for me. It's pretty cool, though!

I'm a full-time writer because no one will hire me to do anything else. It's disheartening, but at least I have a place to live and food to eat. This weekend The Divine Miss and I will have houseguests and be working in the garden, so writing isn't featured largely in the picture.

My buddy SpookGirl in Cassadaga, not so very far south of you, tells me that there is a huge swath of the state that's afire. I hope none of it is near you...?

Cheers dear

Hi, Ruth! Of course, I would love to be LT friends! You can never have to many of those! I also love the "What are you Reading Now" group ,it becomes something you really look forward to each day. Before LT, (is that BLT?) I had a handful of people I could talk books with and now, that has expanded ten-fold, which is a very cool thing. No I have not read "Home" yet but "Gilead" was easily one of the best books I read last year. I've been keeping an eye out for it, on Bookmooch & other places but I'll probably just snag it from the library. You'll have to send me your link for your book challenge, I'm on the 50. I started the challenge in December and it's been another great group.
Thanks for adding me to the "womansheart club", I'm honored to be a member!
Mark
I'm so glad you like my library and said so! I admire yours. I just finished Home and loved it; also Gilead. I am reading the latest Alexander McCall Smith #1 Ladies Detective Agency stories just now, also The Looming Tower which I've had for two years and am finally getting to; and have just gotten A Tree Grows in Brooklyn to reread, and a novel about Dietrich Bonhoeffer, I Am Bonhoeffer. I love your Wine, Women and Books Club and you should submit your group to the reading group feature in Bookmarks Magazine! Please comment to me from time to time about what your are reading. My best to your book loving cats and guardian dog, not to mention your husband. My husband Betts and I share right many books, too. He is reading Honolulu, a "woman's book" basically, just now and I gave him Walter Mosley's Little Scarlet, a "man's book" I just finished to read next. We usually, not always, like the same kind of books. Have you read Child 44 yet? I've been thinking about getting that one soon.
How do...thanks for the thumbs-up!

I'm breaking from the *Romance* so as to re-eevaluate...I'm thinking of giving it a paranormal-ectomy and having it be finished. I'm a little tired of typing. Harlequin doesn't want anything as long as I'm getting this one to.

Thinkin' out loud...see ya! Enjoy "Slow Reading."

xoxo
Hi Ruth - I printed it out as well :) It's a lot of pages.... but well worth a read!

Best,
Rachael/Flossie
thanks for the add! The best thing about LT is meeting other readers and getting ideas for new books!

Jen
Hey Ruth,

That's my thumbs-up, btw, on your Last House review.

Here's another link I think you might enjoy: http://www.librarything.com/profile/jaso...

Jason is easily the best professional-style reviewer that LT has (or at least the best I've yet to find!).

Best,
Brent
Hi, Ruth -
I am absolutely new to this LibraryThing - and am fascinated that you and I seem to like the same sorts of books or authors.
How can I note you so that I can use your experiences when I'm searching for something new to read?

I'm honored! Thank you for including me on your "friends" list.
What a joy it is to feel the soft, springy earth under my feet
once more, to follow grassy roads that lead to ferny brooks
where I can bathe my fingers in a cataract of rippling notes,
or to clamber over a stone wall into green fields that tumble
and roll and climb in riotous gladness!

- Helen Keller
Thanks so much for the kind words! It's not hard for me to go off on a tangent regarding someone as awesome as Lahiri... and The Namesake really changed my life. Especially the way I look at books! Hope you have a wonderful weekend -- the sun is back out in Maryland, and I'm thrilled! Spring usually lasts about a week and bleeds right into a hot, sticky summer, so I'm going to enjoy this "in between" time while I can!

Take care!

Best,
Meg
Hey, you're quite welcome, and thank you, Ruth, for stopping by.

I've had All The Pretty Horses forever. Have I read it? No. After reading The Road I'm now more likely to. The only other I've read of his is Blood Meridian, which I thought was slightly better (by a hair) than The Road. I hear Suttree is also supposed to be one of his best.

I am So Cal through and through, living now about 90 minutes north up the 15 from SD, in Chino, near where the 60 & 71 merge. Grew up in Long Beach. San Diego is indeed a wonderful city (don't get down there often enough) and I'd choose it any day of the week over L.A.

Tallahassee huh? What led you there?

I see you've got 2666. Have you had a chance to read it? I'm hoping to soon.

And thank you for supporting me in my newfound snobriety!

Best,
Brent
Oh dear, oh dear. Chronic illnesses are a royal patootie pain. I have severe gout, and it makes my life a living hell about 3x a year.

You think I'm menschy? Have I got YOU snowed...! Thanks, dearie, that's a lovely compliment.

I'm off to work on my romance novel. Contract day is coming!

Cheers
RMD
Hi Ruth! I saw that you added two of my favorite books recently, "A Conspiracy of Paper" and "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell"...such a wonderful few days of reading just in those two alone! Influenced by your addition and by mckait's review, I've just ordered "My Abandonment" which is well outside my usual reading range. I avoid books with teen narrators or POV characters, since teenhood was such a painful time for me. I don't want or need to relive it.

How's life in Tallahassee?

Cheers
RMD
Hi Ruth...oh my goodness! "Geek Love" and "How the Homosexuals Saved Civilization" and "New Amsterdam" all added recently...you are in for a thrill-ride of reading pleasure. These alone can make you feel every emotion known, including "camped to the eyelashes."

I've given some thought to reading "Our Lady of the Forest," but Guterson hasn't performed for me since "Snow Falling on Cedars," which I loved. Will you leave me a message linking to your review? I'd hate to miss something good just because I was feeling stubborn.

Cheers
RMD
Hi there womansheart...no, we're pretty informal about how threads get started. I'm just normally the one who gets all Virgo-y and bosses everybody around.

Happy Spring, and blessings for the new year burgeoning,

RMD
Thank you, don't mind if I do!

best wishes from across the pond!
Hi,

Thank you for the Murun Buchstansangur link! Wonderful stuff, if only there were more available.

Happy reading,

'Murun'
thanks for adding me. i love all the authors that you do as well. happy reading!
