Oliver Postgate has died, aged 83. It seems that many people acknowledge him for Bagpuss, but for me it's The Clangers and Noggin the Nog that will linger in the memory.

I was a big Clangers fan and also Ivor the Engine, less so Bagpuss. I met him once when he did a booksigning where I work. He bought some of his characters with him, Bagpuss (which reduced several people to tears!) Professor Yaffle and some Clangers. He was a complete mentalist - a true eccentric and for that reason I am very sad today. We don't seem to have many characters like that anymore.

I loved The Clangers, Bagpuss and Ivor. A couple of weeks ago while searching Youtube for Phoenix and the Carpet clips I found a whole bunch of Ivor The Engine episodes and watched some of them. They were just so quiet and gentle. I don't think they make children's programs like that anymore.

If people haven't already read it I would highly recommend reading Seeing Things which was his autobiography. Excellent stuff (and mine came with a CD with video clips of clangers).

I never really got the Clangors, quite enjoyed Ivor and was a great Bagpuss, and Noggin fan. That was proper children's TV unlike what they make now. Showing such episodes is still one of our amusements at gatherings of likeminded friends.

Condolences to all his family.

...and all his friends went to sleep too....
