... I've already started) and I'm also mulling over some of the groups reads there. The Picture of Dorian Gray, Herodotus' Histories and Foucault's Pendulum are all in my TBR, as is Margaret Atwood's Handmaid's Tale.
These are my 1010 categories, so there will be books fitting these ... Following cyderry's example here is another 1010 group read. This time for Herodotus's Histories (Not very organised yet). We are hoping to read a book a month. This links to a general discussion thread that I just started.

I don't know if other people have a better idea of how to structure this but I was thinking along the lines of this ... May I make a suggestion? Don't assign any extra-curricular reading during months we have tomes to read. Infinite Jest and The Histories might be a bit much.

I note that my edition, though great value for money, being an Everymans Library edition, is lacking in diagrams, maps and the like.

I finished Vanity Fair some time ago, am still reading Herodotus in small doses, and have started The Master and Margarita. ... do-able.
I don't think that any more, but it's still fun to track things. I'm back to the THICK books. I've started Herodotus for the umpteenth time and am working on Vanity Fair also. As for Vanity Fair, I've got the book at home and audio in the car. How efficient. ... that wacky Pulitzer winner, A Confederacy of Dunces. Not a classic (yet).
As for true classics, I'm back to reading Herodotus. Maybe this time I'll be able to get past Egypt! ... Has anyone else in the US received their books in this manner?

All are splendid and I'm ... The also very venerable and enjoyable Histories by Herodotus is the first that comes to my mind.
May be you should also try that new classic Origins of the European economy by Michael McCormick, for itself, and its bibliography of 74 pages.
Then there is a lot of travel ... Just started The Histories by Herodotus. One of the best books I've never read :P. Travels with Herodotus, the last new book by Ryszard Kapuscinski, explores the influence of The Histories of Herodotus on his own life and travels. If any of you are interested in revisiting the work from a different perspective, I strongly suggest that you seek this volume out. ... Tale of Genji - a nice short one :)
