Although this book is thoroughly researched and timely, there are some serious downsides. Like, don't start a drinking game where you take a drink every time you find a grammatical error or typo; you'll be drunk by the end of the first chapter. There is at least one cringe-worthy error every page. And ditto for every time the author uses six words when two will suffice. The author is a sloppy writer, and is hampered by an equally sloppy editor. In addition, he tends to be less well researched on Biblical information, since he attributes a quote of Jesus's to G. W. Bush, and there are several other places where he appears to be unaware that militant Jesus is present in the New Testament outside of The Revelation. In spite of that, it is interesting and compelling, and a bit frightening, especially for those of us who lived within this world closely enough to realize he is not making it up. ( ) An exposé of the movement behind one of the largest publishing successes in the industry, Standaert investigates primarily the politics that drive LaHaye and the Left Behind empire. He clearly shows his research and sources, having first-hand experience with such people. To gain a better understanding of premillennial theology and its importance vis-à-vis American politics is to read this book. In order to improve, perhaps a discussion in greater detail of the theology and how it links with the politics could have been added. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
The most effective message yet found by the hijackers of mainstream religion is Tim LaHaye'sLeft Behind series of apocalyptic Christian novels. This wide-ranging study examines the books and the empire behind them. Author Michael Standaert contextualizes theLeft Behind phenomenon by probing millennial thinking across cultures, from pre-Christian times to the present, and tracing the evolution of militant evangelism in the U.S., uncovering the links between fundamentalist religious figures and mainstream right-wing politicians through organizations like the Moral Majority.Skipping Toward Armageddon rips the lid off theLeft Behind books' ideological underpinnings, showing how LaHaye uses them to advance the foreign and domestic policy goals Religious Right, from fomenting Middle East violence to promoting homophobia and xenophobia. The book is a timely cautionary tale, revealing that these best-selling books are not simply harmless thrillers written from an evangelical Christian perspective but a tool in a fanatical group's agenda.
