This is an incredibly powerful collection of poems by J. Patrick Lewis. Through driving rhythm and stinging rhyme, Lewis brings to life the voices of Civil Rights leaders from around the world. The anger, passion, and injustice beneath the meter of the poems gives them a momentum that had me turning the pages one by one. "Freedom Summer," a free verse paragraph in the center, is a heartstopping departure from the rhythm and rhyme scheme, depicting the murder of three Black boys by the Klan without music or embellishment. Five illustrators give each voice a face with muted colors. Although the formatting on the ebook version removed what I imagine are impactful page spreads, this is still a book that shouldn't be missed in a middle or high school library.

In my opinion, this was an okay poetry book. I liked how Patrick Lewis put a poetic spin on the 15 civil rights leaders. Each had their own voice, the tone and rhythm grabbed the reader's attention This powerful book focuses on the challenges some men and women have faced and what they did to overcome these hardships. The historical events are not changed or censored but are presented in ways that children and adults can understand and appreciate them. The illustrations are amazing, each page shows new colors and images in order to characterize a different individual and the battle that they faced (hatred and discrimination). The theme is that ordinary people can rise to an occasion and do extraordinary things. It takes one person to speak out , but it takes a whole group to make a change. ( )

When Thunder Comes is a collection of poems all about civil rights leaders from around the world. Each poem describes their work and their opinion about the cause they are fighting for. These very real people, such as MLK and Gandhi, are displayed drawn on the opposite page in a colorful illustration that is either symbolic or biographically accurate. This book could easily spur class discussion about civil rights leaders and lead to some cool civics research projects. I love history, so having kids learn about actual figures and events is beyond exciting to me. ( )
