When Sophie starts acting out, her mom and dad put her in time-out. Sophie keeps acting naughty, until Granny comes up with a clever way to help her behave. A good trick for parents to remember.

This is an example of a picture book adapted to a board book that works better in that format! A rare thing for me to say, but it's true in this case.

Sophie is an adorable baby mouse. Adorably naughty that is! Yummy dinner? Oops, it got thrown on the floor. Helping Daddy? Oops, all the laundry got UNfolded. Reading a book? Uh-oh, someone is taking Granny's glasses! Time-out for Sophie until she learns a lesson....for the moment anyways.

Wells' delicate but colorful illustrations show a mischievously naughty baby that parents will snicker over and babies themselves will happily gurgle and point to. The story has a gentle, appropriate plot - Sophie is naughty, gets a time-out, then is good.

The text is a little smaller than the usual board book font and a little longer, but this is perfectly suited for toddlers who can listen to a little bit of story and will recognize their own naughty behavior in the pictures. The book is a sturdy 4x6 with borders around the illustrations to make them pop.

Verdict: An excellent choice to add to your board book collection. Even if you already have the picture book, I'd go ahead and get this one and if you're deciding between the two (not likely since the picture book came out in 2013) I'd go for the board book first.

TIME OUT FOR SOPHIE by Rosemary Wells is a predictable children's story. It starts out with Sophie's mom making her food and Sophie throwing it on the floor. Her mom gets mad but makes her some more food. She throws it on the floor again. Her mom then gives her a time out. Once her time out is over she goes to help her dad fold clothes. He folds the clothes and Sophie knocks the basket on the floor. He gets mad and folds them again. You can predict what happens next. Sophie finally realizes that if she does bad things she will get a time out. The illustrations of this book are simple drawings that look to be colored in colored pencils. This would be a good story to read to a child if they were always getting in trouble. ( )

Rosemary Wells is a genius, pure and simply. No one understands kids quite like she does. I read this aloud to my preschoolers and they were glued. No one understands a "time out" quite like a preschooler!

The pictures with Sophie in a time-out are outstanding. The way that Well's conveys Sophie's sullenness with a few simple strokes of her pen is the work of a master at the top of her craft.

Essential purchase, preschool-2nd grade. ( )
