This book is told in the perspective of a baby killdeer bird who has just hatched from her egg. The story is comprised of the baby bird's thought processes as it quickly learns about the new world around her. The bird learns to trust her wobbly feet, and soon, can't stop running around from place to place exploring the world. Throughout the book, the bird comments on her adventures and findings about the world with a innocent and curious perspective. At the end of the day, another egg cracks and the baby bird declares that she will proudly introduce her new sister to the beautiful world she just discovered.
I like how the text in this book is manipulated and crafted to convey meaning. For example, some words are italicized, the words "blink" are arranged around the bird's eyes to symbolize the meaning, and the word stretch is written as s-t-r-e-t-c-h.
MEDIA: ink, watercolor, pencil
GENRE: fantasy fiction children's picture book
USES:
(1) This book could be an introduction to a unit on life cycles because it briefly introduces the beginning stage, birth.
(2) This book is a great example of a book written in first person. We could discuss what makes this a book in first person. Then, students could re-write the story in the perspective of the chick that is still in the egg (the one that hatched at the end of story). ( )
