This episode of Percy Jackson's saga has him re-creating parts of Odysseus's journey plus Jason and the golden Fleece. . . and adding a half-brother to his posse. A light, fun read. ( )this bookis an action book for teens and people interested with mythology. The second in this great fantasy series for kids, sort of what you'd get if Edith Hamilton had written the Harry Potter series. Here, the magical borders of Camp Half-Blood have been poisoned, and the search for a solution sends Percy, Annabeth, Tyson and Grover to the Sea of Monsters in the search for the Golden Fleece. Another exciting, lightly suspenseful adventure with some well-drawn characters that manages to sneak in some knowledge about mythology along the way. The story continues to move along as we're introduced to a new character (Tyson, Percy's half-brother cyclop) and we head to Monster Island to rescue Grover and The Golden Fleece! Big battles, big rescues, and the evil continues to grow! Young Readers who enjoyed the first book will definitely enjoy this one as well. For adults... it's a nice little romp but you'll get more of a kick comparing this voyage to those stop-motion animation movies we watched as kids :) A fairly good entry into the Percy Jackson series. It's the end of the school year and Percy is really looking forward to another summer at camp when he's thrown a major curve and ends up on a dangerous quest. After a few twists and turns the quest is successful. Too successful. This book did have me looking forward to the next Olympian adventure. Susan says: The saga of Percy Jackson and his friends continues on the next summer, much as Harry Potter continues on each school year. It turns out that in this school year Percy has befriended a homeless teen named Tyson, who ends up being a Cyclops and also Percy's brother. This opens Percy up for a lot of teasing at Camp Half-Blood, and he spends some time feeling guilty about that. But then Percy, Annabeth and Tyson go on an unauthorized quest to save Grover, who is trapped in a cave as a Cyclops' potential bride. There is a lot of humor in this book, along with Greek mythology which gets more and more specific as the books move on. There are also very loyal friends, and I think that is the only thing that helps Percy get through these dangerous quests. A good book with a lot of action, and I will keep reading in this series. This book was soooooo interesting! I can't wait to read the next one! In this book, I think we've discovered a lot more things about demi-gods, and we found out what the prophecy is! The ending was the most interesting part! But I don't wanna spoil it for you!!! But I think when Percy found out that Tyson was a cyclops, that would've been interesting, if my friend hadn't spoiled it for me!!! I love the series, but this book was a bit dissapointing. It was not as good as the first one, and was a bit of a let down. The Sea of Monsters is the opposite of second book syndrome. Though it is clear that all of these books are leading up to the last book, Percy's 16th birthday, and The Prophecy, so far the books are all compelling on their own. The second book wouldn't quite stand on its own, I don't think, because readers need information from the first book to understand/appreciate The Sea of Monsters, but I didn't feel like this book was filler on the way to 16 while I was reading. But the best part was this: "I'll be next door, " Annabeth said. "You guys don't drink or eat anything." "You think this place is enchanted?" She frowned. "I don't know. Something isn't right. Just be careful." We locked our doors. p. 115 I have felt like I've been going crazy lately. Coraline and, I think, Another Faust have kids going into other-worldly places and sitting for lunch. I thought the cardinal rule of fantasy (cause there is totally such things as cardinal rules of fantasy...) was that you couldn't eat or drink fairie (or mythical monster or Other Mother or Satan's) food and expect to go back to your world like nothing ever happened. It was so nice to see that this cardinal rule was upheld in The Sea of Monsters. That alone would have made reading this book worth it for me right now. Luckily it has a lot to offer to other readers as well. Another great read from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. In the second book of the series, Percy is living in relative normalcy until a team of cannibalistic dodge ball players shows up to dash any hopes of making it through one full year at school. Fleeing to the demigod summer camp, Half Blood Hill, Percy finds that his beloved sanctuary is not as it used to be. Percy sets off on a quest to not only save the camp that he loves, but also his best friend, while his nemesis Luke plans to overthrow the gods once and for all. Again a great read, the action was great and the plot was well thought out. Shorter than the first book, the Lightning Thief, the Sea of Monsters still continues to develop the characters involved as well as add new faces not seen yet creating a familiar setting for the reader while still adding new things into the old mix. Many thanks to the reviewer who wrote (elsewhere) that even adults who liked Harry Potter would like these books as well. I'm having a great time reading them! Really liked the message in this one that families are messy but that you still have to work together to make it through. For kids these books will be a fun introduction to mythology, for the adults it makes for a fun game of seeing how fast you can remember the classes you so disliked and identify the characters before the author explains them. What a blast! Susan says: The saga of Percy Jackson and his friends continues on the next summer, much as Harry Potter continues on each school year. A sequal that meets the high expectations set in the first book. A fantastic follow-up to a great debut novel. The Sea of Monsters is a great look at friendship, with a large dose of myth, a pinch of adventure, and a dash of peril. A great series for the younger sect. First in a series set up the background and the main characters. It give you a nice adventure story where at the end the good defeated evil. The second chapter in a series usually give you way much more depth because this time around you realize the evil come back stronger and it has long term plans. You also would realize the main character is center to the plot of the evil, that’s why he wasn’t killed. Plus there will always be some kind of a prophecy about the future! The second book of Percy Jackson and the Olympians titled the Sea of Monsters follow a similar path. It brings a lot more depth to the story because we found out that the Titan has a plan, it also fresh out some other characters such as Clarisse and introduce other characters like the Cyclop Tyson that might be important in the future. I love that the story give us an unlikely shared experience and bond between Clarisse and our main heroes. She was just a typical bully character in the first book, this time around it show us more about her and how she could actually be important in the series. One element I like about the series is how it keep on updating the Greek Mythology to the modern world. It’s so much fun to see all these characters in myth adapted to modern life! And seems like each book one major god shape the course of action in the book. Last book we met Ares the god of war, this time around it’s Hermes and his gadgets. Not only that, this time around we also get to see the teacher Chiron spring into action with his centaur clans! that’s always a sight to be seen! Of course, nothing compares to the twist in the end that is such a game changer. It changes everything! Oh I can’t wait to get on to the next book! The second in this popular series that brings Greek mythology to the modern day. Percy (Perseus) Jackson is a demigod, half-mortal son of Poseidon. Camp Half-Blood is under attack, its protective tree poisoned and dying. Percy must break the rules to go on a quest for the Golden Fleece. But will his efforts be enough? Or will they just make matters worse? An enjoyable update of Greek myths. Percy and his cohorts are believable both as modern children and as heroes in training. Probably best appreciated by readers who already have some familiarity with Greek mythology. (Would certainly read very differently without that familiarity.) I read the Percy Jackson and the Olympian series several years ago before they became popular. I'm a fanof mythology, but, at the time, I didn't like the way the series read. I'll probably go back and reread and see if my opinion changes. This series is aimed at tweens, those 9 - 13 kids that inhale books like this. Its cute, but not all that great, but it might be because I'm not a tween. I enjoyed the greek references, and I suspect there are large amounts of kids who now can recite the complete Greek Pantheon complete with minor heroes, gods, and goddesses. As for the plot. Percy and friends go on quest, use Percy's Sea Abilities, gains a new friend, Defeats the bad guy, learns a few lessons, all stuff that was covered in the last book. Easily as good as the first book, Riordan continues to translate Greek mythology into a modern context. Many of the monsters and adventures that the Olympians are facing are a shout out to some of the very same that the Greek and Roman heroes of old had to face themselves. It’s both fun and educational and a fast-paced ride for anyone who wants to get on. While simultaneously becoming immersed in the story, it’s almost difficult not to wish in the back of your mind that all of this is real, and maybe there are children who are demigods, going on quests to save the world. It’s not going to win any major awards, and is likely not life changing, but it’s a fun, quick read that makes you root for the hero. I recommend any of the books in this series to readers 9 , skewed toward boys 9-12.-Lindsey Miller, www.lindseyslibrary.com A wonderful continuation to the tales of Percy Jackson. This book is written just as well as the first. This book could stand alone. Again, the characters are believable and the action continuous. I look forward to the characters that will be added to the next book! Even better than the first one! The action gets started a lot faster in the Sea of Monsters, and the fast pace just keeps going throughout. The plot definately thickens in this book, and the unexpected twist at the end has me absolutely dying to read book 3. (Would certainly read very differently without that familiarity.) Percy Jackson has actually managed to get through seventh grade without any (significant) trouble, and he is looking forward to a nice long summer at Camp Half-Blood. But when he and his new friend Tyson arrive, things are different: monsters are able to cross the normally impenetrable boundaries of camp, and the new activities director is more concerned with holding chariot races than preparing his students for heroic combat. Percy’s dreams are also bothering him – he keeps having visions of his best friend Grover trapped and calling for help. Soon Percy, along with Tyson and Annabeth, must set off on another quest, to rescue Grover and retrieve the one thing that has the power to save Camp Half-Blood. This book was every bit as good as The Lightning Thief. It reads extremely quickly, and Percy’s voice is entertaining as always. Once again, the plot treats readers to an overview of Greek mythology, this time dealing with Odysseus’ voyage and the story of the Golden Fleece. The adventure in this book ties into the larger story arc dealing with Kronos’ possible return (and the resulting destruction of Western Civilization). Some old characters resurface, and Percy’s own character develops somewhat as he learns more about his own identity and destiny. I definitely can’t wait to continue with the series and find out what happens next! #2 Percy Jackson and the Olympians YA fantasy series. (audiobook) On the last day of a very quiet school year, monsters infiltrate Percy’s dodge ball game and, rescued by his friend Anna Beth, he once again leaves school a suspect in blowing things up and causing mischief. But this year Percy’s been looking forward to summer when he’ll be able to go back to Camp Half-Blood with his friends and train more in the ways of the demi-gods—which he just found out last year he is. His father, Poisedon, has been very quiescent, which troubles Percy somewhat and he longs for a closer relationship with his dad—but how do you get close to a Greek god? Percy discovers that Camp Half-Blood is changing, with their magical pine tree failing and the borders allowing monsters in. However, he’s been having strange dreams about his friend Grover, a satyr, sewing his own wedding dress, and Percy just knows he’s in trouble. Percy and Anna Beth end up helping Clarice, one of their least favorite half-bloods from the previous year, on her quest to secure the Golden Fleece which will cure the magical pine tree that maintains the camp’s defenses—and also to hopefully rescue Grover at the same time. Tagging along is Percy’s newly-discovered younger half-brother Tyson, a Cyclops. This book certainly didn’t have a sophomore slump going—I really enjoy this series and the reader tells it in such a way that it’s hard to stop listening! Lots of interesting information about Greek mythology as well as a great story. Again, another wonderful adventure that mimics and embraces greek/roman mythology and turns it into a new, modern adventure for our young hero Percy to take on. |
