Four fabulous, smart, savvy French women offer up their amusing insider take on Parisian life, love, and liberty. The authors are all in their early to late thirties, are unmarried though attached, most have children, and are highly accomplished. Bohemian freethinkers and iconoclasts, they are not afraid to cut through some of the myths. They say what you don't expect to hear, just the way you want to hear it. They are not against smoking in bed and are all for art, politics, and culture; making everything look easy; and going against the grain. Sports are something to talk about in bars, and maybe, yes, your mother did do a little something subtle to her face after all. With 100 black-and-white and color pictures -- many taken by the authors -- How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are will explain those confusing subjects: clothes, makeup, men, culture, and lifestyle.… (mer)

Charming, but fleeting. ( )

This was a nice little palette cleanser for me to listen to. Light and fluffy as a crepe, it was fun to listen and think of ways we all idealize Parisian life, and some ideas for incorporating that into my life. Turns out, I'm quite parisian already - I just need to learn to embrace it and keep some mystery. ( )

Amusing, but a bit too cliche. It often makes Parisian women should like self-absorbed, cheating jerks, which is not the case. ( )

How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are is a satirical take on how to exude Parisian chic while managing to look effortless. Though somewhat sparse on written content, the book features plenty of photos, line-art drawings, and bullet-point lists that make it better suited on top of a coffee table than on a bookshelf. I would have preferred more articles since the self-aware authors do a great job of deconstructing the French girl myth in a humorously self-deprecating manner. I particularly enjoyed the inner monologue of "1:00 P.M. First Date at the Cafe de Flore":

"She picks up the menu. Each time, the same thought crosses her mind: in her hands, this is more of a geographical map than a restaurant menu. It is an intimate, chaotic, and complicated path through the jungle of her culinary neuroses. And she can't fight the looming idea that she will have to battle her way, keeping up appearances, without stumbling and, especially, without looking like she's asking herself too many questions." How to be relentlessly self-involved: Don't try so hard. Never notice your genetic gifts and your privilege. Never notice other people at all! If you mention Sartre that means you're deep and if you bring up cheating at a dinner party that means you're edgy. Compulsively readable but leaves a bad taste. ( )
