A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. . . .

A thrilling new adventure set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, and—for the first time ever—written entirely from Luke Skywalker’s first-person point of view.

Luke Skywalker’s game-changing destruction of the Death Star has made him not only a hero of the Rebel Alliance but a valuable asset in the ongoing battle against the Empire. Though he’s a long way from mastering the power of the Force, there’s no denying his phenomenal skills as a pilot—and in the eyes of Rebel leaders Princess Leia Organa and Admiral Ackbar, there’s no one better qualified to carry out a daring rescue mission crucial to the Alliance cause.

A brilliant alien cryptographer renowned for her ability to breach even the most advanced communications systems is being detained by Imperial agents determined to exploit her exceptional talents for the Empire’s purposes. But the prospective spy’s sympathies lie with the Rebels, and she’s willing to join their effort in exchange for being reunited with her family. It’s an opportunity to gain a critical edge against the Empire that’s too precious to pass up. It’s also a job that demands the element of surprise. So Luke and the ever-resourceful droid R2-D2 swap their trusty X-wing fighter for a sleek space yacht piloted by brash recruit Nakari Kelen, daughter of a biotech mogul, who’s got a score of her own to settle with the Empire.

Challenged by ruthless Imperial bodyguards, death-dealing enemy battleships, merciless bounty hunters, and monstrous brain-eating parasites, Luke plunges head-on into a high-stakes espionage operation that will push his abilities as a Rebel fighter and would-be Jedi to the limit. If ever he needed the wisdom of Obi-Wan Kenobi to shepherd him through danger, it’s now. But Luke will have to rely on himself, his friends, and his own burgeoning relationship with the Force to survive.

I have mixed feelings about this book because I absolutely love Kevin Hearne's writing and his Iron Druid chronicles, but also really cannot stand Luke as a younger character. Even as a mature Jedi Master in the old canon he wasn't among my favourite characters. That isn't to say he's a bad character, he just doesn't shine as brightly as the others. He has always felt more like a plot device than a fully formed character to me. It also doesn't matter which canon you're in, old or new, young Luke is a whiny idiot of a boy growing into a man without the adorableness of similar characters in other fandoms (Barry Allen in The Flash comes to mind).

I'm not a big fan of first person narrative, especially in Star Wars novels. It just doesn't fit with that genre for me. The story itself held one merit for me; Luke learning how to use telekinetic powers. As the author says in his afterword; the sudden appearance of that skill in Luke's repertoire between ANH and ESB has always been a mystery. In that regard the novel excelled. The rest of it and the other characters? They just didn't interest me in the slightest. I read it for the sake of reading it, for the knowledge of the new canon. I was very happy with the way the novel ended. ( )

This Star Wars novel is set in between the original film and The Empire Strikes Back when the Rebel Alliance is looking for a new base of operations. Luke Skywalker is dealing with the comedown after his initial success of destroying the Death Star and having no one to train him to use the Force. Luke is assigned a mission to recover the brilliant cryptographer Drusil Bephorin (from a species who talk about math for fun) who is being forced to work for the Empire. Accompanying him on his journey is the sharpshooter Nakari Kelen, the daughter of a wealthy industrialist who supports the rebel cause. They fly on her souped-up yacht, the Desert Jewel.

The narrative overall is episodic adventures of Luke, Nakari, and Drusil using their strengths to avoid entanglements with Imperials and bounty hunters. Uniquely, the story is narrated from the first person point of view of Luke Skywalker, and does a good job of capturing his uncertainty and impulsiveness. Luke's relationship with Nakari helps him realize things about himself in his effort to learn more about becoming a Jedi. They also have an amusing, quippy relationship that leads to romance. The idea introduced in the prequels that Jedi were like Catholic priests who could have no romantic attachments always bothered me so it's nice to see it subverted here.

While this novel is ultimately a light and frivolous thing, I did enjoy it. ( )

In this book, Luke learns to use the Force well enough to move a small object a short distance. He also has a small self-contained adventure, including a romantic relationship. Unfortunately, the book doesn't add much to the mythos and the story itself isn't very compelling. I understand that the author was under heavy constraints to tell a story without much effect on the rest of the series, but you can really feel the shackles. ( )
