It’s a really good linkage of four stories, set in at least two different parallel near-contemporary Earths, with enhanced greyhounds and deep dark family secrets. Reflects on gender and gender violence, and on journeying to find yourself. Recommended. This...was fascinating. Much deeper and more intricate than I thought it would be when I picked it up as a random library selection. I wasn't expecting the narration changes, but once I got used to the switch, it worked. Left me still wondering about things (which I don't mind). I'd say not a book for when you want simple and straightforward with closure. This is a book of maybe and potential and what if. There is a lot to like about Allan's debut. Fluid, engaging writing, an interesting premise, vivid details. But I finally gave up after 99 pages of preamble. I wanted to know what the relationship was between handlers with implants linking them to smart dogs; I wanted to see a race; and the kidnapping of a child to very little drama just deflated my desire to patiently wait for any real drama to come into the story. Thsi is really four loosely related shorter stories. The first story about East London suburbs in a bleak future but which has empethaths and smart dogs bred with some human DNA that they race, was pretty good, although rather dark. The first person point of view is narrated by a girl who creates elaborate gloves for the racers. Unfortunately the second story tells you the first was all made up, and in general the other three stories are not nearly as strong as the first one. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension

There are four stories in the book, loosely connected/related to each other. Allan's genre, according to Wikipedia, is speculative fiction - whatever that is. The book seems slightly sci-fi, slightly fantasy, slightly dystopian future - but regardless of categkry, it grabs the reader, and makes for a highly enjoyable read.
I'll be back for more. ( )
