Humans have been making lists for even longer than they've been writing letters. They are the shorthand for what really matters to us: our hopes and aspirations; likes and dislikes; rules for living and loving; records of our memories and reminders of the things we want to do before we die. Just as he did with Letters of Note, Shaun Usher has trawled the world's archives to produce a rich visual anthology that stretches from ancient times to present day. From a to-do list of Leonardo da Vinci's to Charles Darwin on the pros and cons of marriage or Julia Child's list of possible titles for what would later become an American cooking bible, Lists of Note is a constantly surprising A-Z of what makes us human.… (mer)

Yet another coffee table book! Definitely something for fans of lists but if you are you will not be disappointed. Not every list is as awesome as you might expect but there are still enough worth reading so it´s fun. Loved it for the lists of Lovecrafts writing prompts :) ( )

Some interesting, others not so much. ( )

Truthfully, this is more a browse than a read, but what a fantastic collection! Very fun way to while away some time and it would also make a great gift. Included in this treasury are historical documents -- many in their original form of lists from groceries in a medieval monastery, to possible suspects in JFK's assassination, to Marilyn Monroe's personal goals for self-improvement, to Da Vinci's list of things to discover/invent, to F. Scott Fitzgerald's conjugation of the word "cocktail" as a verb. Humorous, touching, awe-inspiring, insightful and fun. Often included are original photographs of the list-maker as well as the texts often in their own hand-writing. A little thrilling to view Da Vinci's mirror writing and doodles, which look amazingly like inventions that have come to pass. The compiler also includes a short paragraph of context and history for the list. Apparently list-making crosses centuries, continents, and disciplines, genders, cultures and religions. Buzzfeed, stand down. ( )

I'm of two minds about this book. Even though the curation has a lot of work behind, this book is hardly the compendium of inspiration that I expected. The book has some interesting variety and among several uninteresting lists there *are* seeds of inspiration and example to be learned from others.

In my digital edition, some of the lists are presented in image form, and they were quite low resolution, which didn't help to extract the contents of the list. Fortunately, this is not the rule and some of those images are transcrpited.

Overall interesting but not life changing. Get it if you really, really want to. ( )

I am a list maker. I have post it notes everywhere and notebooks everywhere with lists about all kinds of things. As a kid, I lived for new editions of the Book of Lists. You list makers out there know what I’m talking about.

This looked like a must have. It wasn’t really though. Although entertaining, it was uneven in its interest level. Who doesn’t love a good list made by historical figures or in interesting time periods but there was way too much of that and not enough modern lists.

Not all of the lists captured my interest and for good or bad, I was reading this book on an e reader and some of the handwritten lists could not be adjusted for better viewing or had a typed addendum of the actual list.

I read both hard copy books and e books and the e readers have limitations when it comes to illustrations and maps as well as original writing that is hand produced. The other down side to what I call fun books (as opposed to prose or poetry) is that the price doesn’t always reflect the quality. I paid only a small amount for this book and am glad I did not pay more.

This is a great book for skimmers – those willing to ignore the lists that don’t interest them. I am too concerned with reading the whole thing so I suffered through it. Take it for what it is and check out Chrssie Hynde’s advice for young girls who want to rock! ( )
