Well-written thriller, but deeply part of the current fashion for plots too complex for words. Do I care about any of these characters? Decidedly not. ( )

This is definitely an intriguing read. Started a little slow for me during part 1 with all those introductions, totally didn't expect part 3, the ending to be as such! Honestly enjoyed reading it gradually. 'Don't judge a book by it's cover' comes to mind.

I have received this e-ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange of my honest review.

A real whodunnit written with skill and dexterity. Of the old school kind with a broken detective, an obvious villain and much goings on. There’s nothing deep or meaningful here just a really good book. ( )

n 1703, 15 years before New Orleans was founded, Frenchman Nicholas Langlois brought this French Catholic tradition with him to Mobile, the capital of French Louisiana at the time. Eventually, due to fears of flooding from hurricanes, the capital was moved to New Orleans in 1723, but the Mardi Gras tradition lived on in Mobile.

What was once a festive occasion marking the beginning of the somber Lenten season has since transformed to a multi-week celebration for everyone, Catholic or otherwise. Mardi Gras literally translates to “Fat Tuesday.” The idea was to party hard and fatten up in preparation for fasting that traditionally occurs during Lent.

Gulf Coast Mardi Gras ParadesHistorically, “mystic societies” have been the tradition in Mobile. These exclusive societies, sometimes referred to as krewes, are often invite-only and host formal masked balls marking the start of the Mardi Gras season. These same societies put on parades for the general public, riding huge colorful floats down city streets and tossing throws such as plastic beads of green, yellow and purple; doubloons; branded cups; candy and small toys.

To learn more about the Mardi Gras roots in Alabama, venture off the Alabama Coastal Connection a bit and head to the Mobile Carnival Museum.

Thinking of visiting coastal Alabama? Mardi Gras season is a great opportunity to experience the rich culture and traditions along Alabama’s Coastal Connection.

Black Widow. (a Jack ParablaneThriller) Christopher Brookmyre. 2016. I really enjoyed this contemporary Scottish murder mystery. The author does a great job of making you wonder who the real villain is. The story is told by the egotistical woman surgeon, Diana Jager, who is on trial for the murder of her younger computer nerd husband and the disgraced journalist, Jack Parablane, who is working for the murdered man’s sister. She is portrayed as a selfish, exacting, bossy wife who wants to improve her husband. He is portrayed as a mild-mannered, kind guy who is desperately trying to please his wife. Different pictures immerge of both of them as Parablane continues to look into their life together. I had a few inklings of the real criminal is. Descriptive sex scenes and violence. ( )

Picked this up after a long reading gap with this series. Parlabane is a favourite character of mine. It was a good read but didn't quite gel for me. Was sad about the divorce and the chapters being told from the Widows perspective and then Jack's was a faint bit irritating. The book ended well though, and it did manage to keep me going and wanting to pick up the next one. ( )
