An archeological classification focusing on the investigation and classification of glass beads from approximately c. 400 A.D. - 700 A.D.. The classification concentrates on the grouping beads by colors used. Much of the book is a catalog of extant beads of more interest to the archeologist, perhaps, than the artisan, but the first half of the book is invaluable for its discussion of bead shapes and colors used. Color plates are included along with several line drawings and a bibliography. Highly recommended. ( ) inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
Anglo-Saxon beads are an important source of information for the post-Roman and early-Anglo-Saxon periods in Britain. This national survey presents the material gathered together by Margaret Guido, who pioneered the study of glass beads in England, together with other contributions which include two essays by Martin Welch placing the study of glass beads in its historical and archaeological context in early-Anglo-Saxon England and suggesting areas where future research should be concentrated. At the book's core is a classification of the forms, colours and decorative features of all the glass beads that have been recovered through excavation, supplemented by schedules listing both published and unpublished examples with references to their publication and to the museums where they can be studied.
