Meddelandefragment

I am reading Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

... is excellent. (IMNSHO!) People either love it or hate it, no middle ground. Secondary votes for The Grand Sophy, Jane Eyre, and I, Claudius.

I read Wide Sargasso Sea and really enjoyed it. I saw it more as being inspired by Jane Eyre rather than as some form of rewrite. It was truly bizarre, but kind of interesting in that crazed, life-in-the-tropics sort of way. Very melodramatic, though. However, reading Richard's review makes me ...

... there's a reason why these are classics. Come to think of it, one book I did dislike quite a bit at school was Jane Eyre and I've grown to love it since. (Another was Wuthering Heights but I still feel the ame way about that.) Children should be absolutely forbidden to read any ...

#9 Oh my, that's a tough one. Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre are up there, and I'll always maintain that Dracula and Carmilla are amazing. I plan on going back to a lot of classics and gothic novels this year as well. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

>75 Also, to bring up Jane Eyre again (I just read it so it's fresh in my mind), Rochester is considered ugly by conventional means, but when Jane (or Charlotte) "reads" his face, she finds that the bumps and bulges on his head show that he was basically a good man with a moral center.

... tp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physiognomy">Physiognomy One stumbles across this fairly often in 19th century literature--Jane Eyre comes to mind. I even saw a recent article that says it's coming back into vogue among scientists (albeit in a somewhat different form from before).

Charlotte's The Professor's pretty short, I think... Or read Jane Eyre if you haevn't already, it's bloody brilliant and perfect for these wintery evenings. I'm trying to finish mine too, to start my 75 (I'm moving up too!) and my 1010 Challenges with a clean slate, but I keep getting ...

I've only read 20 or so of these, but I recommend: Jane Erye The Good Earth Don Quixote (Very long, but very enjoyable) And Medea (especially if she has not already read it.) If she has an interest in Science Fiction: Dune and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep are both ...

I was Catch-22 in the first quiz and Jane Eyre in the second. I've never read either book. Guess I need to put them on my TBR pile.

Oh, and if you're going to include classics like the Scarlet Letter, why not include Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice? Why is A Christmas Carol the only work by Dickens included when Jules Verne gets 3 entries?

I'm slightly horrified by the "targeting the Twilight audience" goal of the films, (well, mainly of the Jane Eyre film - I'm not so attached to Wuthering Heights) because I suspect they are therefore not going to be particularly concerned with appealing to book purists... It doesn't sound like ...

I'm Jane Eyre which is slightly amusing as my real first name is Jane.

45. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte Of the three books I've read so far by the various Brontes, I liked Jane Eyre best, this second, and Wuthering Heights third. But I've liked them all, overall, and look forward to reading more. I much preferred the parts from Gilbert's point ...

I just finished Jane Eyre for the first time. So glad I finally read it. I think I may read Mansfield Park next, just to see why Charlotte wrote of Ms. Austen: "What sees keenly, speaks aptly, moves flexibly, it suits her to study; but what throbs fast and full, though hidden, what the blood ...

55. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, 489 pages. 4.5/5. Review. Finished 11/28/2009. Another classic I've never read. Even though Jane Eyre different than I expected, it was great. A very satisfying read, especially over the lazy Thanks ...

I disagree with that reviewer about my inner twelve-year-old or whatever. Every younger reader that I know who has read Jane Eyre has, without exception, either mildly or violently disliked Mr. Rochester. It isn't about "getting" or understanding him at all. They think him old and creepy and at ...

#196 Will surely do that, Amy. #198 I read Jane Eyre when I was 12 or thereabouts and found it to be kind of gloomy. Not that I didn't like it. But I certainly didn't fall in love with the hero. He seemed, well...old to me. But who knows maybe if I re-read it someday I'll change my mind!

64. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte Finally read this classic. This area of reading is, sadly, poorly represented. So many new, good books to read the old ones seem to get put off. I am trying to make an effort to get some of these read. Of course I loved it. I knew the major reveal but ...

I'm still trudging through Jane Eyre (I'll be glad when I can finally stop including that book in these threads.). ... than I can? I also can't help thinking that perhaps the ultimate 'non-physical-beauty-advocating' book must be Jane Eyre. I was about 13 when I first read it and, to be honest, I think I was too young, but I know thousands of others read it at that kind of age and loved it so a lot ...

Medellia, The book was Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, edited by Harold Bloom, and yes, I found it to be very worth reading. The best of the lot was the feminist reading by Gilbert and Gubar (and the worst, disappointingly, the Marxist reading by Terry Eagleton). The essays really deepened my ...

One cannot dismiss Lord of the Flies. It is a singular masterpiece whereas, though I love both Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, they are not. They have been done before and since, just not as significantly nor as well. And as to Woolf; most any book of hers you put in there will ...

>2 Wuthering Heights removed for Jane Eyre? No, no, no, no! Take out Lord of the Flies to make room for Jane Eyre! WH must stay! I don't think I'd count Joyce as a British writer, but I've not yet read Ulysses, so I don't really feel qualified to argue that point. I would change The ...

I finished Dracula one day before Halloween, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm still reading Jane Eyre but I'm having a hard time with it. I guess I need some time to recover from the 2nd part of the book. . . Now though I am reading The Flanders Panel for the The Europe Endless Challenge. ...

... not such a fan of Anne myself, but all three surviving sisters published) Thomas Hardy? And I, too, am so happy that Jane Eyre has found another fan. I'm a big Bronte nut myself. ;)

Finished Jane Eyre last night and loved it. Just started Leviathan by Philip Hoare this morning, about mankind's fascination with whales, and I am loving it so far.

#51: I love Jane Eyre, so I am happy to see that it has found another fan!

And Jane Eyre was my #8. I read this book for my Classics/1001 category. I loved the story. I always thought that the language and the feel of the story would be too old fashioned for my liking, but I loved it. I read the Penguin Classics version, and what I disliked was the introduction/foot ...

#67 was another classic Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. I tried a couple of chapters online first (Gutenberg Project) to see how I would like the language used, and I didn't think it was that bad. I loved the book. I loved the story, I loved the writing, I loved Jane. The only thing I didn't ...

I know someone has already suggested Jane Eyre but I want to give it another vote. Edward Cullen does remind me of Mr. Rochester. What other character scowls? It always annoyed me when I see Twilight shirts saying 'I love Edward' when I know that Edward Rochester is so much sexier, romantic ...

My favorite has always been Charlotte - like many here I've read Jane Eyre more times than I can count, but I'm reading The Life of Charlotte Bronte right now and I'm becoming fascinated by Emily. I'm taking this particular biography with a whole shaker of salt, but based on what Gaskell has to ...

Just reread The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova and loved it even more this time around. Now I started on Jane Eyre, my first 'classic' novel.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte - good story, I see why people keep reading it. Reminded me of LM Montgomery The Aeneid by Virgil - I was never as familiar with this story as The Iliad or The Odyssey so I'm glad I read this. Confessions of Augustine - probably not one I'll ever read again ...

To Kill A Mockingbird, Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre are the top 3 on my all-time favorite book list. I re-read these about once every other year. The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy comes a close 4th

Jane Eyre is one of my three all-time favorite books! It joins the ranks of To Kill A Mockingbird and A Prayer for Owen Meany. I try to re-read it each year. Have you seen the PBS adaptation of the movie? It is wonderful.

... like most of the chapters on the 18th and 19th centuries repeat the refrain that so-and-so's work was derivative of either Jane Eyre or Middlemarch and that so-and-so tried to transcend imitation but just couldn't. This is intriguing to me in light of what I posted in Message #3 from Sho ...

Just finished Cranford and I've now started Jane Eyre. Yes, wisewoman's lovely review of Jane Eyre has deservedly skyrocketed into first place. Since I had no plans of reading The Octopus, I thank you, Wilf, for giving me the gist of it.

Amy, Jane Eyre has been in my top five for years. I LOVE LOVE that book. In fact, I've now officially read it too many times, and although I still love it, I can't read it now for a long time, because I practically know it by heart. I think I've seen two adaptations, and both seem insipid to ...

Jane Eyre and Les Miserables are two of my favorites (sadly I don't have any film recommendations). I find them both comfortingly hopeful in tone.

I am stressed out this week, so I have found myself rewatching the 1983 adaptation of Jane Eyre, with Timothy Dalton and Zelah Clarke. (Hooray for Timothy Dalton!) Have also been rereading my favorite passages. Jane Eyre is good comfort food. Have also been reading more of Les Miserables. For ...

I just finished Tender is the Night and a collection by Edgar Allen Poe. I'm now about 50 pages into Jane Eyre. I've also started The Best Ghost Stories and Why We Suck. Sometimes you need something light and funny.

Ohh...they all sound good. I have actually never read Jane Eyre. I some how escaped high school without reading it, how I do not know. I should put it down on my list to read for this year. The others sound really good too. DH loves Steve Berry and I have a bunch of his books on my TBR pile ...

At the bookstore I got Jane Eyre, The Charlemagne Pursuit (Indiana Jones/Da Vinci Code like adventure) and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. I am just going to work all my new buys into the 1010 challenge, because I feel I must read what I buy to justify it :D

I am thoroughly enjoying my first read (believe it or not) of Jane Eyre on a cold, cloudy weekend with a dusting of early snow. Perfect!

Anna Karenina if I have to pick just one; Jane Eyre and Rebecca if I'm allowed more!

Jane Eyre could even now, at Twilight, see the star of the morning. What a great and terrible beauty it was to behold!

My next book is Jane Eyer. *Edited to fix touchstone

I started Jane Eyre over the weekend and I'm really enjoying it. I can't believe I waited so long to read it. I'm also reading Love, Stargirl for something lighter.

kiwidoc in Book Nudgers : In Need of a Nudge (nov 9, 2008, 10:09pm)

For your classics, Anna Karenina if you want to disappear for a while, but Jane Eyre is a must read also. For your other: Year of Wonders or Rebecca.

Absolutely Jane Eyre.

Jane Eyre, definitely. 2nd place nudge would be Rebecca. There are some really interesting comparisons between the two. Some thing Rebecca is a modern retelling of Jane Eyre.

I would nudge two books off your list: Jane Eyre and The Mists of Avalon. Jane Eyre I only read this year myself but I'm really glad I did. First it's a great story to read. Secondly there are quite a few books that refer to Jane Eye in pop. lit. such as The Thirteenth Tale so it's good ...

I agree, you can't go wrong with Year of Wonders or Jane Eyre. Life Mask was a bit disappointing.

I liked Rebecca a lot too. Anna Karenina was one of my top reads last year, but it's long. Jane Eyre is excellent and a must read. But if you're looking for something written more recently, I recommend Year of Wonders. Can't go wrong with any one of those four.
