I wouldn't include contemporary fantasy not set in an urban centre - so stuff like The Limits Of Enchantment or The Owl Service (in fact all of Garner's work) would not be urban fantasy.

... I've got The Owl Service by Alan Garner on my TBR. It's Young Adult fiction. I found The Owl Service is best read after reading the underlying Welsh Mythology - the four branches of the Mabinogi: The Mabinogi. One of these stories has all the elements which underpin the book. I fortuitously re-read The Owl Service about six months after steeping myself in a load of Celti ... ... I did not come away seeing quite why this is a classic. I suspect it was more the right book at the right time.

The Owl Service is one of my all-time favourite books and is probably the book I have re-read the most in my life! Have read it several times as a child, then again as a teenager,and once in my 20s and once in my 30s. (Must be due up again soon, thinking about it as I'm now 40!) I have been off challenge for a while, re-reading The Owl Service (thoughts here) for a childhood favourites reading challenge ... ... Arthur and his men are sleeping in the series I mentioned. Much of his work is based on older Welsh mythology. Especially The Owl Service, which is similar in theme.
I also am not anti-Arthur. I just find the story unbearably tragic and doomed, and unless done beautifully, want to bypass ... Sounds a bit like The Owl Service although I haven't read it since I was in single digits ...

I used to get to read more to him, but nowadays he's falling asleep after a few pages. I'm about to start The Owl Service a book borrowed from his Nanna. I started it while visiting and was pleased by the spookiness of the opening.

Originally published a lot longer than 10 yrs ago though! ... or not, but the two books I found most difficult when I first read them were Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones and The Owl Service by Alan Garner. Both of them involve highly complex interactions between ordinary characters and mythological or other-worldy goings-on, and they can be ... ... idea, even if it's a bit quiet.
