"Fifteen-year-old Ian Daly's moral universe is turned upside down when, at this father's funeral, he discovers that his father had two secret families. When Ian Daly and his sister Catherine arrive for their wayward father's funeral in his small and desolate upstate New York hometown, a secret that was kept from them their entire lives emerges: their father Thomas abandoned two other families, leaving behind two furious wives and several children who never knew their father. Ian wants to know more of the truth, but his sister and mother want to preserve the carefully constructed myth they've created around who Thomas really was. In the cold, lonely winter landscape of small-town New York, fifteen-year-old Ian sets out alone to learn the truth about his father's past and the families he left behind. Here Lies a Father examines the long-term effects shameful secrets have on a family, and how difficult it is for a young man to reconstruct his own sense of right and wrong, when every value and moral principle he was ever taught was based on a lie."--Provided by publisher.… (mer)

A teenage boy from a dysfunctional family learns about his father’s secret life at his funeral. As Ian begins to unravel all the lies he’s been told, he realizes for the first time that he has the strength to accept the truth and change his own path.

A beautifully written book with a deep message. Even though I haven’t lived Ian’s life, the author’s use of words made me feel that I knew exactly what Ian was feeling. The story, told in flashbacks, kept me engaged, and I read it in two sittings. ( )

Well, I thought this book was going to have some deep, shocking secret but there really wasn't anything all that deep and dark. The saddest part of this story was everybody in Ian's life were liars and he grew up feeling unworthy of love or friendship and the way the world is today, that's really nothing new. ( )

A coming of age story full of family secrets and lies. Fifteen year old Ian and his sister travel to their father's home town to bury his cremains. They meet family they have never met before, including an ex-wife of their father. Ian is intrigued by all the family secrets that are being revealed, but his sister Catherine wants no part of it. She leaves and Ian stays for another day to explore the part of his father's life that Ian knew nothing about. As he learns more about his father he also learns a lot about himself. When he returns home he confronts his mother about all the lies she and Catherine have let him believe and he decides to take charge of his own life.

I usually avoid coming of age stories, but this was well written, nicely paced, with some interesting encounters. I enjoyed it more than I expected. to. ( )

Thank you librarything.com for the advanced copy of Here Lies a Father by McKenzie Cassidy in return for my honest review.

The title of this book reveals a great deal about the story itself, a father who lies and lies dead, a family who lies as well. Ian Daly’s father has died and at his funeral Ian discovers that his father had abandoned two other wives and several children. Over a weekend, Ian will learn much about his father, but also about himself. Interesting read. ( )

I couldn't get past chapter 4 of this book- and that was with skipping large chunks of text. The story is completely unbelievable and drawn out. The writing is juvenile at best. It does not matter what the book is about because it is not worth the time. With millions of manuscripts sent to publishing companies, I wonder why on earth they chose to publish this drivel. ( )
