A woman seeks her destiny among a clan of nomadic warriors trapped in interstellar intrigue: "Absorbing . . . There should be more SF like this" (Jo Walton). In the past, humans were the dominant star-traveling species in the universe--until the Chapalil came, conquered, and absorbed the Earth into their intergalactic empire.   One of the only humans ever granted nobility by the Chapalil, Charles Soerenson once led a failed rebellion against the alien overlords. Now his sister, Terese, has abandoned her homeworld, impelled by a broken heart to seek a new life among the worlds her brother rules.   On Rhui, a planet off-limits to interstellar voyagers, Tess inadvertently stumbles upon a dangerous Chapalil conspiracy--and only the timely arrival of the Jaran saves her from near-certain death in the wilderness. A tribe of nomadic humans roaming the plains of Rhui, the Jaran have long forgotten their ancient Earth history and heritage. Intrigued by their world and their ways, Tess shares an immediate emotional connection with Ilya, the Jaran's brilliant, charismatic leader, a man of extraordinary passion and vision.   But despite her growing loyalties to this proud chieftain and his people, Tess must take care. For Ilya's ambitions threaten to trigger violent planetary upheaval. And the Jaran have been chosen to play an unwitting role in a plot that could have powerful repercussions far beyond the nomads' volatile world.   The first book in Kate Elliott's acclaimed Novels of the Jaran, this masterful science fiction classic combines rich characterization and world-building with adventure, intrigue, and romance. It is both a magnificent introduction to a compelling universe and a stellar standalone reading experience. Jaran is the first volume of the Novels of the Jaran, which continue with An Earthly Crown, His Conquering Sword, and The Law of Becoming. … (mer)

was a good fantasy novel intermingled with an OK sci-fi novel. I feel like the sci-fi parts serve to bind a bigger story together though and for the sequels, it'll be needed. overall a thoroughly enjoyable novel. I am also a sucker for Kate Elliott's romance and fantasy stories so that helped ( )

This book was fine if you take into account the really outdated and 1990s attitudes towards gay people. I tried to read the rest because I had the omnibus edition, but the second book tried to explicitly tackle this in a cringey way that does not hold up in the year 2020 so I didn't finish it. The worldbuilding is interesting, the political intrigue is interesting. The love story is well-executed. I could do without the unnecessary love triangle because you know who Tessa is going to end up with it is obvious, but what are you going to do. Did it need to be as long as it was? Probably not, a good editor could probably cut it in half and it would lose nothing. It was well written enough that I was not completely bored and the timeline of this book is over the course of a year or two, which felt extremely fast. Am I peeved that the political intrigue didn't get wrapped up because it is a series? Yes. Am I peeved that Tessa didn't tell Bakhtian about the fact that aliens exist because she "thinks it will destroy him"? Yes. I feel like one book should be a complete story in itself, and I can't abide cliff-hangers. This book decided in the back half that it was really a love story all along, but I wouldn't describe this as being a romance. It is a space opera book with interesting worldbuilding, but I would say nothing that hasn't really been done before. Like if you read Shapechangers! by Jennifer Roberson it has the same vibe, but fantasy and ten years before there is a distinct "these are coded native americans" happening in these books. ( )

I wanted to like this more than I did. It was a solid story with interesting world and characters, it hooked me enough I wanted to keep reading, but I always picked it up with a sigh. Not sure if it was Elliot's writing style or something about the story that was hitting me wrong without me knowing why.

If you are interested in sci-fi adventure that involves a mix of high and low tech cultures, it's worth checking out the sample on Amazon and seeing what you think.

This book is on the Fiction books with Polyamorous Relationships list, there are things about relationships among the Jaran that will be disturbing to a lot of polyam readers, but the view of love and sex will be refreshingly non-mono and non-normative. Sadly heterocentric and gender essentialism is very much a thing. (For anyone wonder, I had trouble plowing through the book before hitting the heterocentrism and gender shit, so there was more going on to turn me off than just that.) ( )

Some parts of the ending didn't go the way I wanted, but overall I thought this was well done. ( )
